Title: 0003 r.SW (Every Morning)
Post by: LSD4me on July 06, 2009, 07:09:24 AM
Hey!...Every morning when i try to start my Monster 696 (2008), the starter turns like 2 or 3 times and then dies with the error 0003 r.SW  ??? on the screen. Once the error appears, the system is "restarted" and I am then able to start her up (although she hesitates before turning over...) This happens EVERY morning and when the system restarts, it looks as though everything is reset because my clock is set back to 12:00 when this happens...

Any ideas? I'm going to the dealer today but would like to hear any input...

THANKS!

It sounds like the system voltage is dropping to a bare minimum (actually below) and the system resets. Whether this is due to a weak battery, charging system or excessive draw from the starter, the dealer will have to tell ya.

Is it normal to occur on a brand new bike?? (bought in Jan...) and NO mods were performed yet...I do notice that when this happens, upon reset and start, the display immediately shows the BAT Voltage screen...

I have heard of several people having battery issues on brand new bikes (inc others besides the 696) and having to have the batteries replaced under warranty.  [thumbsup]

No, it is not normal.  It is also a warranty problem, and if it is the battery, you are running out of time.  Get the bike to the dealer.

Like everyone said, get it checked out. It may not be the battery. It falls under your 2 year warranty, unless stated otherwise in your owners manual

Your dealer handles the warranty, but the warranty is from the battery manufacturer, not Ducati.  If the battery is a Yuasa, full replacement for 6 months then prorated for, ummm, doh, I don't know.

For anybody interested...The problem was with the Voltage Regulator...warranty item coming in 3-5 days...

As a side note, the mentioned that I should refrain from riding until its replaced as it can cause a fire?????

I had one go up in flames on a prior bike.  Not so much fun.

Awesome, glad it is gonna get fixed. I would mention that this has taken a toll on the battery by deep cycling it (unintentionally by you as you had no idea what was the cause) and you would like to have the battery replaced as well. Or at least have it noted so that when you exceed the warranty period for it, if it fails you may get some consideration on its replacement then... Just a thought.

What does it mean to deep cycle a battery?? Constantly charging and discharging?

So, back to square 1....The dealer replaced the Voltage Rectifier/Regulator last week and the voltage was showing between 13.5 and 14.1 for a few days...Then i noticed that voltage was sporadic again (between 12.1 and 14.1) and that when i turned the key on but engine off, the voltage on battery showed between 10.1 and 11....This morning i go to start her up and BAM, 0003. r.SW and system resets....Same issue as before the rectifier was replaced....Battery showed 10.0 volts and was blinking on the screen...after she started up (after the reset), voltage showed 13.5 - 14.1....when i shut her down after 30 min ride, voltage showed 10.6....I ride her every day so its not a just sitting there and draining issue...NO MODS have been done yet...i have been waiting to get this resolved first....

WTF??? Why dont i see this error referenced anywhere else...did i get a lemon???? [bang]

I think I found the problem...

Is it normal to occur on a brand new bike?? (bought in Jan...) and NO mods were performed yet...I do notice that when this happens, upon reset and start, the display immediately shows the BAT Voltage screen...

I suggest a few tabs of 4-way windowpane, wait an hour or two, and then perform a tail chop.

 ;D

Sounds like a solution!!! [bow_down] I'll do the tail chop, then remove all the turn signals, brake light and anything else that draws current from the battery and will post the results...Crossing my fingers!!!

One other thing that you can check yourself is that all the connections are good.  The battery cables should be clean and tight at the battery and starter.

There's also a connector between the voltage regulator and battery I believe.  It would be odd on a new bike but open the connector and make sure all the connections are clean and in good working order.  This is a classic place for Ducati charging systems fails.  Some people ditch the connector and just solder it all together.

It could be the replacement regulator was faulty too, have the dealer check.  Italian machines are not noted for their exceptionally good electronics.  It could also be that as a result of the original regulator problem the battery is now not holding chage well.  Again, ask the dealer.

Scott, that was my suspicion as well... I think the battery got hozed via all the (Previously mentioned in this post) Deep Cycles and it has left the battery extremely weak in the knees....i know the charging system in her is not top notch so the battery wont get a nice recharge just by riding it...I need to push for a new battery before my warranty expires...but i think i have some leverage with the replacement of the Voltage Rectifier / Repeated Issues....

So i just got my bike back (again) from the shop and this time its FIXED! woo hoo!

Question tho, the shop said they DID NOTHING!  [bang]

Im not a retard, i know that it was consistently showing either LO BATT or it was around 10.1 volts when the engine is shut off...now it consistently shows 12.5 ish...I KNOW they did something...prolly charged the battery....

But why would they not disclose that they charged the battery? Why is advantageous for them to keep me in the dark...Should they have replaced the battery instead of charging it?

Sounds fishy to me. Simply charging the battery would not change the "long range" situation. Your charging system is supposed to be able to do that! If it cannot handle charging it up and maintaining that charge, you are still no better off.

Is it possible tha battery was replaced and not just charged? Mebbe the regulator that was just changed was faulty and they swapped it out again?  ???

They prolly would have told me if they changed the battery...

Replacing with a new regulator is a possibility...

Im just concerned with the shadiness of not informing me of what they did... They must have done something because ive been having LO BATT issues for almost a month and now all of a sudden i dont...

Well, if it was something they overlooked initially or a question of not doing the job 100% or the way that was authorized by DNA... pride is a hard thing to swallow.

Either way im happy its resolved and i dont want to beat this thing any further but what im ultimetely getting at is that if there was an issue with my battery, and they just put a bandaid on it, then im going to have battery issues relativelty soon and past the batteries warranty...i really dont care how they fixed it im just concerned that the fix is temporary and that my battery is still hozed because of the voltage regulator issue.

I hear ya. I wouldn't worry too much about it. You have it on record when the bike was brought in for this problem and it was BEFORE the warranty on the battery expires. So I think they will have to make good or at least help out if the battery goes south anytime soon...

I get this is an old post (2009) but this happen to me a week ago, I drove it last week (Thursday ) to run some errands and by the end of the day the thing wouldn't start. I also have a 2009 M696 and the morning I got up to start her up she did what yours did, gave me the code, shut off, turned back on, then started right up. drove it for a while, parked it at church, an hr or so later I get back on it to ride it to my friends house so he can garage it for me before the snow comes and it wont start, shows 10.1 and dies instantly. push started it down hill to get it to run then it just died as soon as I put it in N.

called my local bike shop and they came and picked it up the next day (cause I bought a 2 year warranty for it) and haven't heard back yet what the deal was? I hope to God its nothing big and just an old battery? ???
