We are planning to do a lot of changes to this monster. We are still learning what parts fit and what parts it needs. Modifications done so far is

CF Front Fender M696 - 1098 Style

SPEEDYMOTO Frame Slider: Mon '01+,MS,SS '03+,748,996,749D,SC, Hypermotard, M696
http://tinyurl.com/5km66y

RHINOMOTO Front Axle Slider: Ducati/Aprilia
http://tinyurl.com/6kzxoo

M696 Bar End Slider/Mirror Kit- We decided to go this route instead of the Oberon bar end turnsignals since we have done that on almost all our project bikes but that would have been another good way to go.
http://tinyurl.com/5zn78v

CRG "Roll-A-Click" Brake/Clutch Lever: Brembo - So far the best modification in my opinion.
http://tinyurl.com/5muoya

We are currently looking at turnsignal options. Below is a comparison of the maddoctor folding turnsignals and stock. The maddoctor is brighter and smaller but not much different looking than stock.
http://tinyurl.com/6myv5r

As for rearsets we are coming up with a kit to make S*R rearsets work on the 696. We should have that together soon, the rearsets below will run about $559 for the S*R and the 696 will require about a $70 kit that will include a new rear brake line.

We relocated the regulator and horn so that we could remove the plastic shroud all together.

We will have more pictures coming as we decide what to do next. We are looking into an oil cooler kit, CF tank side covers, european plastic shroud to replace the one used for the charcoal canister after it is removed, HID kit, wheels, QD slip on exhausts and much more.

The front fender was more of a test fit just to make sure any 748-998 or 1098 fender would mount. We are putting either a 696 style one on or a DP Diversion style one on soon.

Diversion fender will look great...

and thank you for doing this...should stop the 'grumpys' from bagging the 696, showing them that it really is a Ducati in spirit...mod the hell out of it!

Heh - wouldn't it be easier to lop the subframe and headlight off a multistroodle or hypermotard and replace them with 696 bits?

It only takes a day to swap the motor. Plus I want to build up the motor a bit before it goes in. Swapping parts take a LONG time. We've done this before several times. It would be a lot easier to swap motors.

The MTS and HM has LONG forks--and are very tall bikes. It would not look right for what we want to do.

Maybe we will do a big 4V motor instead...Smiley

And probably not a SSSA. I actually like the M696 swingarm now - it is probably a lot lighter and stiffer than the SSSA set up too.

I was _mostly_ joking, but don't the 1100 SSSA bikes mostly have frames with the swingarm pivot supports on them? Does the SSSA bolt up OK without those outrigger bearings on them?

Ahhh, I guess that doesn't really matter then...  laughingdp

Not sure.
I heard the MTS SSSA was different mounting than the S2R/S4R series SSSA. I remember some of the 2 valve motors were different widths than the 4 valve swingarms- so milling of the cases was required.

I was thinking of all the work for a cosmetic upgrade and thought....maybe not after all...Smiley

Now I'm thinking a big 4V motor in the M696... Smiley

Noooooo - keep it air cooled.  It would be a lot harder to get a radiator and the plumbing to look good on the 696.

no one, not even Moto, can make those radiators look good. A motorcycle made love to a fridge, your bike is the love-child, deal with it  Grin

I like the swing arm on the 696 - and imagine when Dicati tgurn the 'Italian design' knob up to 9 or 10 for the bigger 'premium' bikes - it will look hot!

Maybe...

I've wondered before whether, given enough motivation, a 4 valve motor could be fitted to a monster with a Benelli-like underseat radiator? You'd still need to do a nice job of the plumbing, but even that's do-able, my brother used to have a VT250 Honda that used the frame as part of the plumbing system - I dunno quite how well the material Ducati use for the frame tubes would take to having coolant run through it, or whether there's anything else attached that'd be concerned by the extra heat, but I'd like to see someone try :-)

It would be a blast to put a torquey 1098 motor in the new Monster frame.
I think the radiator can be hidden better than it is on the S4R and S4RS. We looked at having long narrow radiators made for the S4R and S4RS at one time.
Black hard pipe and black silicone hoses would  look better than what is on the water cooled bikes now.
Underseat radiator would look great. Might be a hot ride though...

They get away with underseat exhausts, it can't be _too_ different a problem heat wise...

The picture in my head has standard-looking low mount exhausts (or possibly S*R side mounts), with the seat modified to be rider only, and the space from the cowl down (where the pillion seat and the back of the subframe goes) reused for the cooling system - a long skinny radiator that goes diagonally, starting down near the back of the riders bit of the seat, and extending backwards up to near the top of the taillight. I'm guessing the stock sidepods could be modified as air intakes (though if you were doing it "properly" you'd probably source the cool air from right up near the headlight and duct it between the tank and the airbox lid...) Getting the hot air out would be easier, either around the taillight, or, since I've already given up the pillion seat, through louvres in the top of the set cowl, though my dream has it looking as close as possible to a "stock old school" Monster, so I prefer the idea of a pair of small-ish round tail/brake lights suspended in the radiator exhaust duct...

'course _I'm_ only dreaming, not trying to work out how to pay for this kind on work  Grin

Iain, you're going to have to add 'mad professor' to your title.

Fantastic ideas!
