Title: gaging some interest
Post by: DesmoDreamer on August 27, 2008, 04:44:41 PM
this is posted on the DML and Hoosier Hooligans so you may have seen it already, if not hope you are interested.

So i dont know is there will be alot of interest in this or not but i am going to through it out there to gage on if it is worth doing or not!

ok enough about that here it is!

I would rather not chop the tail on my monster, one because of warrenty, two because i have a fairly rare model and three because i like being able to return things to stock. My boss has recently aquired a job shop that make fiberglass parts and we just ordered a 3D digitizer.

once again i digress, so i was thinking about digitizing the beer tray, shortening it about 4" and getting rid of the ears from the turnsignals, and having it made out of fiberglass. It would still have a stock look to it but be much shorter and intrusive.

there may be the possibility or some kevlar or CF in the future.

All in all i need to know wow many wouldbe interested in an idea like this, any other ideas of are appreciated also!!

thanks
DESMODREAMER

I'd have to disagree that a tail chop would affect your warranty.  I'm pretty sure nobody has ever been denied a warranty claim because their tail was chopped.

Good luck with your project.  Hopefully it will look great.

I woulda been interested too. But alas I'm trayless. I would take a moment to point you towards an extremely attractive design if you were looking for input though. Dusty from the NMMR section has a Senna S2R, I don't know if it's a "Senna" beer tray or something she found else where but it's bar none the coolest one I've seen. Send her a pm she's a sweety and I can't see her having a problem with sending you a pm.... I can't find a good pic online to post.

My tail is stock - no chop.  Am going to keep it that way.

I think the tail chop does look good on the monster, but if you are a big dude like me, it only makes the bike look puny under you.

Also, I think the designers in Bologna are not complete idiots - if you look at the beer tray from the side it does flow well with the profile of the monster.

And the CF beer trays are cool IMO.  If only i could squeeze more money out of the grocery budget . . .

Curious what model, tricolor?

maybe you should try to incorporate a liscence plate holder into it, might be cool.

I think i might have read the directions wrong and chopped a little too much?

Now that may void a warranty :-)

Last fall, Ducati Seattle told me my warranty would be voided if I chopped the tail on my '07 S4R.

On what grounds?

1st tail chop i ever saw was at my dealership, on their demo....

Dave R is a member here and he is from Ducati Seattle.  Perhaps he will weigh in on this, but I seriously doubt anyone with any experience at that dealership would say that.  Perhaps it could void the rust protection part of the warranty at the spot of the tail chop, but that is about it.

they can only void the warranty on parts that your mod affects...

a tailchop would void your frame warranty (say it cracked and failed at a weld) but not your motor as a tailchop has no affect on its systems.

TOB has a couple of large threads explaining the law on it.

the one i am going to be working on here as soon as the digitizer comes in and i learn to use it will flow with the bike just be a bit shorter since it stick out like 10 feet lol i was also thinking of either making it work with the stock license plate holder or having one bonded on or maybe molded in not sure yet, will look at the when it gets that close!

I am super stoked there is lots of interest because that will make the parts/tooling cheaper for me and anyone that want one when they are done!!!

Curious what model, tricolor?

I actualy have an 07'S2R 800 i know it was the last year for the 800 S2R and there dont seem to be very many otheres out there with one.

here is alittle up date!

we got the Digitizer in last week but my CAD computer doesnt like the programs and drivers need to us it and none of our other computers is capable of funning it without memory issues so we ordered a new CAD desktop today that is am absolute beast of a machine, it should be concidered the super car/bike of the computer world.

anyway it shouldn't be too long before i can scan my beer tray and make some 3D models to look at.

Okay, I know it has been a long time since I have updated this post. I have opted out of using the digitizer mainly because it is cheaper for my so not send out for a CNC cut plug. Mainly I just wanted to give an update and let everyone know that this project is coming together though slowly.

I finally have a work load that is light enough for me to move this project off the back burner. I have laid up a few fiberglass parts from the stock tray and I am beginning to modify them to the length and look that I want. As soon as I have a part I am happy with and start the permanent mold, I will post some pictures. Ideally these will be done next week.

so i was thinking about digitizing the beer tray, shortening it about 4" and getting rid of the ears from the turnsignals, and having it made out of fiberglass. It would still have a stock look to it but be much shorter and intrusive.

Bought this exact "style" piece in CF from Desmoworld years back, IMHO the best looking alternative by far for those who can't/won't chop (and have integrated tail light/turn signals).  Has gone on each Monster I've owned (currently on an S2R), since riding in rain + tail chop = striped back.  If you want photos for inspiration/ideas, let me know!
