Title: Riding home tonight - now only have two gears???? Post by: BribieDuc on August 28, 2008, 12:11:49 AM Riding home from work tonight and about a km from home, couldn't change down into second or first. Kept going and on stopping can now only select fourth or fifth. The gearlever doesn't seen to return to a mid position, just drops down. What's up...any ideas?? 2002 620ie, I've put about 80k on her, runs daily 150km...no indications of impending doom at all. ??? John Title: Re: Riding home tonight - now only have two gears???? A broken $7 return spring on the selector arm >:( Need to access it through the LHS of the engine, behind the alternator cover. Not a huge job, need to take some bits off the end of the crank to access it. Half a day job, if not experienced. Cheers Richie Title: Re: Riding home tonight - now only have two gears???? Sadly, can't seem to select anything but 4th and fifth. No further motion downwards. Title: Re: Riding home tonight - now only have two gears???? The broken tail of the spring may have fallen to a place to cause the problem. Rob Title: Re: Riding home tonight - now only have two gears???? This morning for some reason, it does change down into the lower gears once you 'manually' lift the gear lever up a little. Rode into the workshop really early (given the advice about it being tricky to do for the inexperienced) and bingo....one spring required, pick up this afternoon. :) Thanks everyone ... appreciate all the unput. Weekend task... take the Monza for a run. Regards, John |
