Title: IMI Track in Dacono
Post by: mdlb on August 28, 2008, 10:52:00 AM
I just talked to a guy at IMI and he said they allow bikes on thier track 1.1 mile cart track and there is no cc limit.  It is only $35 for a whole day of riding(9am till dark), thus I was wondering if anyone would like to join me to check out this track, or if you have been there is it worth the drive up for some riding without cops and gravel.  They are open 7 days a week, so I guess if anyone wanted to skip out on work for half a day in the middle of the week you would probally have the track pretty much to yourself.

This is just a opinon but that place sucks ass. Its unsafe at best they mix bikes and carts sometimes. It is super small and tight so getting out of 3rd gear is out of the question for the most part.  I hate to dog the place but for bikes its kind of lame. IMO

Thanks Madison--are you saying it is unsafe due to the carts being on the track at the same time (which I understand and would probally go only during the week to try and avoid this as much as possible) or are the runoffs/track not in good shape/safe.  I understand the comment about third gear, but I still enjoy a really tight course every once in a while and it does not appear that CO has much else to offer in terms of real road courses.

Its unsafe due to lack of run off for one #2 Carts #3 not a great track. #4 They let anyone with no training on the track. I"m and roadracer with the MRA
I was at a small track called Second Creek that is no longer around in 2005 and on a Thursday night practice they let anyone on. A street guy freaked out in front of me in a turn.  I tried to miss him & wrecked my race bike and and broke my collar bone and scapula.

Another time down in La Huanta at a track that is now gone one of my friends that was a racer got killed because a newb who had never been on a track before pulled over on the straightaway. Then cut across the track in front of my friend.
My friend t-boned him at 130 mph and killed them both.  Since then Colorado tracks like other states now require that you take a class
to understand the rules and saftey issues.  IMI does not do this and IMO is very very dangerous.

There are some track's in CO that rock #1 PMI Peublo's track is 2.25 mile 10 turn and is killer all day is like $75 its about 1hour and half from Denver
PPIR just reopened and will be doing track days soon.  HPR will be open in late spring.

Hope that helps

St Vrain raceway is open daily. Fewer cars and bicycles on weekdays. Open 24 hours a day  [evil]

No mention of the bonehead working there that used the track as his own personal driving range?  (not that a golf ball in a corner is a hazard, or anything  [roll] )

And also randomly supervised to ensure safety  [leo]  ;D

Madison thanks again--I completely understand your concern with the lack of training, and after attending a track school and a few track days I can see where your concerns are coming from.  I have looked into Peublo, but I have been unable to find any information about when they have open track days for motos (I enjoy riding on the track but I'm no where near race pace thus it would be great to have a track day with different groups A,B,C).  I am also use to signing up for a track day through  a provider such as "Track daze", is the track at Pueblo just open and who ever shows up is allowed to ride on a given day or do you sign up through a provider/track itself?  I am assuming PPIR is Pikes Peak IR, but what does HPR stand for?  Sorry for so many questions, just moved here and am trying to figure out where to ride.

There are 2 sites that Pueblo list the track days on . #1 Colorado Sportbike club. #2 mra-racing.org.

On the Colorado Sportbike forum look under the heading of Track days or racers corner and on the MRA board under General Discussion.
They list when the days are and phone #s down there to find out when.

The only motorcyclists who seem to like IMI are a bunch of the local Supermoto guys.
I've never been, but haven't heard the greatest stories about the place either.

That said, I think it might be fun on a 'tard.

The Deckers "track" usually has plenty of run off. But sometimes there's steel posts and things in the run off areas.  [laugh]

Just my 2 cents, from someone who has ridden at Pueblo a lot. IMI "can" be better that getting crazy up in the hills, and there are some skills I think can be worked on at IMI, however, even with no karts on the track, the margin for error there is slim to none. 'Tards and mini bikes are perfect for it, but after 2 trips on a full size bike, it lost most of the appeal.

Where is St Vrain Raceway located??

Well there goes that idea, thanks for all of the input.  I guess I will have to start looking into PMP and HIR for next year (gives me time to find a track bike  [evil]).

I'm a little late into this conversation but I echo Mad Isons' comments regarding IMI.  I've ridden there a cpl of times and it is a crap shoot as to who you are riding with on the track.  The last time I was there I had some street racer that had never been on a track before, run me into the mud...thank goodness I kept it up but holy shit was I pissed, the same guy in a session before had taken my line and stuffed me into the corner.  Ok if it was a race but it was an open track day.  Not cool.

Other things about IMI I find unsafe is that they only require you to wear a helmet and jacket and there is rarely anyone on the track to watch or flag if someone goes down.  You are a long way from anywhere there and it would take a long time to get an ambulance there if you were to crash.

I also second watching the Colo Sportbike forum for track days, Rybo (Duc rider/racer for BMS) has organized many a track days.  I would even go so far as to PM him to see if he has any dates in the near future to sign up for.  He's a super cool guy and very helpful.

PS
Mad Ison, I was good friends with 502 as well, I swear he watches over me when I'm on my bike.

Yeah Gene was a great guy. He and I were at PMI a week before he died. He was doin some testing on my bike.
I miss him alot and it sucks what happened to him.

I have a picture of me racing at Miller Motorsports Park with good old 502 on my helmet in tribute to him. ( It has to be one of my favorite race pics)
