Title: Stoner falling over...again...
Post by: mostro on August 31, 2008, 05:21:20 PM
any thoughts on why the hell he was pushing so hard when he was 3 seconds in front and still couldn't gain any ground on vale?
i wish he hadn't fallen, it would've made for a heaps better race, and in my opinion kept him in contention for the title.
what do you guys think? does he still have a chance?

nah he's boned it now. Had a shot if the bike was better set up on that max lean angle issue for the last 2 races, but now he is too far behind to contend for 1st unless vale crashes and injures himself. :(

vermulen had a decent race though which was good.

SPOILER ALERT......(too late but...)

he's out now.

you think it's got to do with the wrist injury?

I mean he was doing 5 lap stints and then resting it....and then lost it on lap 8.

Far out those first few laps are just amazing though - the 3 second gap so quickly was amazing.

He even looked graceful low-siding.

tough to wait until 12 o'clock and then have then get to see 8 minutes of action!

Greg norman=Casey stoner, a good australian comparison. Choker's always fail in a crunch  :o
pressure's a pregnant dog, I don't think stoner would of liked to get in a situation like laguna where he had to fight and possibly lose against rossi head to head again

too bad if someone hadn't actually watched the race yet!!!  [bang] discussing it is fine, but the title gives the game away don't you think? maybe something like "moto gp" and "SPOILER" would have been more appropriate? >:(

Agreed Paul.
As for Casey, I guess when you want to remain #1 pressure gets to people.

Truly disappointing weekend... Casey crashes, Wallabies flogged, the Raiders knocked over... and my ride is washed out on Sunday.  You've got to give to Rossi, though. Someone is smiling on him.

The official word from Casey on Ducati.com

"It is very disappointing for the weekend to end like this after showing such a high level of performance in practice. Basically we took the decision to put one lap on the race tyre in warm-up this morning to get it scrubbed in: we've done it before and not had a problem but today I could feel from the first lap that the grip wasn't right. After a few laps it started to feel better and I was gaining confidence but it let go. It's a real shame but, anyway, we tried hard here and once again I think we've shown we are very fast, we have a great bike and tyres that work fantastically. This gives me confidence for next year and I'm looking forward to it already. As for the injury, it's huge disappointment this problem came out but I'll have to wait until the end of the season for an operation."

Limited scrub on a new race tyre, bet they won't do that again...

+1 on the spolier.

However good point raised non the less.

I think its combination of factors that have Casey & Rossi where they are...

a) both guys are on Bridgestone rubber, it's fair to say that they are on the pick to the lot... which is good for them but bad for competition... so the two run away easier.
b) Yamaha have spent alot of time/money getting their set-up right to suit Vale
c) Ducati have spent time and money to try and control a bucking bronco, all 4 ducati riders have commented on the animal that the ducati is. So development is fixing a problem, rather than makeing a bike & rider improve. There is a slight difference there.
d) There has been a Yamaha on the podium every race! Yamahas have filled the top10 finishers at every race, meaning their bike development is much faster than Ducati's.
e) Stoner and Ducati are really making it fast for 1 rider but from data from only 1 rider... = slower development
f) Casey has no support... there is a reason why teams have more than 1 rider as you need help for not just bike developent, but in race strategy. Last year Loris did a much better job than any of the other Duc riders this year.
g) following from f) the opposite is true from the Yamah squad. Rossi has plenty of help and Yamaha have plenty of skilled riders...
h) If Stoners is indeed injured then this is going to affect him both physically and mentally. Rossi has been injury free for some time now. Also the Yamaha requires less physicall effort than the Ducati, so in any given race the Duc riders are having to work that much harder, some times it pays off, sometimes it doesn't.

ok... enough blah blah  :P ;D - Chris

my sincerest apologies for the spoiler..:-[ :-[ i didn't realise no-one would have not watched it..

don't you have HD spider? cos most of the time they show it 2 hours before standard definition. it looks so much cleaner too.
plus i think rossi is not gay. just read the italian tabloids around their summer, they're always on about how he boats off on his yacht with a girl or two.
but definitely agree on the fact he needs a lot more experience, as this would help lessen his nervousness.
now if only i could see rossi on the ducati...sigh [roll]

fellas, i would read to much into stoner falling over lately.... rossi has done the same and worse... he didnt in the championship race when all eh had to do was finish ahead of Hayden... shit just happens.

the good news is that Stoner is just 22. Rossi 29. remember wot u were like at 22? this year might be over, good news is that it will set up a ripper 2009.

other news, Pedrosa ditched Michelin and is now on Bridgestone. Hopefully the 3 of them get have some real battles with little pressure for the rest of the season.

my sincerest apologies for the spoiler..:-[ :-[ i didn't realise no-one would have not watched it..

A lot of people (including myself) choose to watch it via other broadcasters than the local FTA or Cable TV- I'm not a fan of the local commentary, tho it seemed much better this time with Troy B in the mix.
Usually I prefer the Eurosport commentary, and I like to also watch the free practices and qualifying prior to the race - it's a much more complete experience for me.

Using the spoiler tag on the subject means that people can stay away until after they've seen it.

No HD here - once I can stop spending cash on the bike I guess I'll look at it - I mean my entire viewing this week is the MotoGP and Top Gear last night - that's it....having said that the missus says that I need an LCD TV - and I'll do that to make HER happy.

Nice call Chris! You should commentate - I learnt a lot more from you than from the boys on Monday morning.  [thumbsup]

+1, this is better for us a viewers and for the championship to be healthy!

Its great to have an aussie kick but, we had it for years with Doohan, however this new 4-stroke era has changed the game. It appeals to a broader audience.
MotoGP management love it when some one other than an Italian or Spaniard do well because motogp is already strong there. They need people like Nakano, Stoner, Vermulen, Hopkins, Edwards, Hayden, who broarden the appeal of the sport, thus helping it grow!
So if Stoner does not win the championship, thats OK, because it will mean that its the 3rd year in a row that a different person and a different manufaturer have won it! This variety only helps the championship, and in the end all this does is make the sport bigger and motorcycling reach more people than ussual!... I can see that this will for the majority of the time, help fellow riders like you and me. - Chris

that's true, cos if there weren't any aussies racing i don't see it would stay too long on channel ten.
thank god troy b was there on sunday, one of those two commentators that are usually there is absolutely useless. i cant remember his name, but all he does is set up dumb questions for the other one, who has had some riding experience thank god. and they don't even commentate on the race. >:(

that would have to be greg rust or leigh diffey, neither of which are witty or creative enough to pu a sentence together about anything that isn't on an autocue in front of them!
pedrosa on bridgestones now eh? wonder what he'll use for an excuse now?

so was bayliss commentating for channel 10? goddamn!! i would love to know what he had to say!!

i was unfortunately in Romania for work and so had to put up with Romanian commentary which i dont understand... so there was nuffin i could pick from  it.

its a real shame though. Here in Italy you have 2 distinct fans - Ducati fans and Rossi Fans. When Rossi retires i'm sure they will be come ducati fans just like most are Ferrari fans. The problem is that Rossi fans obviously do not like Stoner and alot of the media dont like Stoner... mainly because he is not a character. Doohan was not a character...Bayliss is a bit better...but you cant NOT like a rider because he is not a character...

ps. Rossi is starting to pee me off a bit lately... growing a form of Schumacher arrogance which is not good... and it seems he puts on an act for the tv cameras and thats all...

I’m a big fan of all the Ozi riders just cant handle Stoners sooking, he need to harden the make the beast with two backs up, Rossi is not there to do any favours he's a racer and  will try to win any way he can, just like any of us would   [thumbsup]

I thought Bayliss did a great job of commentating! I'd gladly watch more racing if he was calling.

Pigmy's rant reminded me of my favourite joke, an Italian and a Greek and arguing about which nationality is better...

Greek: We have the best culture, we invented architecture and philosophy!
Italian: ha! Da Vinci ! we invented flight and Electricity!

Greek: Oh, sure, but our culture is symbolised by the magnificence of Athens!
Italian: meh, we have Roma!

Greek: Of course our culture is better...we invented SEX!
Italian: ah, yes, but we introduced it to women!

 ;D

i think in italy there aren't only those two types of fans. there's dovizioso, loris, melandri fans as well. italians are so picky when it comes to who they back.
but the itals love the fact he's such a character, even though he lost heaps of fans with that whole tax evasion fiasco. tsk tsk

Bayliss was OK as you get a current riders POV, but not necessarilly exciting either. Mind you, it is Channel10 isn't it...
I still miss Murrat Walker from his F1 days, it just made the watch the little much better. I think in MotoGP the two English lads have a fair crack at it, and in the international team that call the WRC (Rally) do well too. - Chris
