While on the labor day weekend ride i was looking at everyone's monster and talking about doing the tail chop to my monster.  I have heard arguments for both sides and each has good points.  I heard that someone was able to make a tail chop reversal for when it rainy outside (of course this never happens in Oregon). 

This sounds too easy but couldn't you weld a smaller tube inside of the tail that you chopped off leaving about a inch and a half of tube sticking out.  Put the tail back onto the frame and measure back an inch and drill a hole through the frame and smaller tube.  connect the two ends together with screws and there you go a fender for when its raining.  And come nicer weather remove the tail and place rubber plugs in the holes to cover. 

I know this sounds like a pain but it beats paying a couple hundred dollars for a shorty carbon fiber fender that still doesn't look as good as a tail chop. 

It's just an idea.  I know my tail is gonna get chopped come next spring. 

Back when I was looking at Monsters and thinkin' I'd have to do a tail chop, I had almost the exact same idea.  [thumbsup]  I was thinking of using some kind of small clevis pin instead of a screw to hold it together, but same general idea as far as the smaller inside tube to slide back into the remaining frame.

The only thing I'd suggest is that you'll need to be careful with the fit and finish, so that when you slide the removable assembly back in that it fits flush and smooth.  This is one of those jobs that could look like a total hack job if done poorly, or look really sweet if time is taken to do it right.

I know of at least one person who did almost exactly what you've described.  He posted up about it on TOB (maybe TJR178?).  It worked really well.  As noted above, the finish might be a bit ghetto, depending on how well you design it.  But it's a simple and viable solution to the swamp ass that comes from a tail chop.

i was thinking about the finish look and given my non-existent welding skills i would have to find someone to do this part for me.  Probably could just go to a welding shop and find someone to do it for cheap.  Probably would look ghetto but its not a permanent part of the bike.

I'm probably going to just get it welded back on.  I never bother to take it off in the good weather.
