Yes, I will be a submariner. On subs, there is only one medical provider. No doctors, no nurses, one person, an enlisted Hospital Corpsman with specialized training to be able to deal with just about any type of medical condition. All of this hundreds of feet below the surface with no contact to the outside world. That's one of the reasons the training is so long, it's VERY intensive.
So, anyone near the Groton/New London area?

Thank you all! I will most likely have lots of questions in about a month. Right now, I have a lot to do at home to get ready for the move. Now that I have the final answer, things can move a little faster now...

Thanks Mel, I Have to remind myself Con-nec-ti-cut ;:|
Nope, no North Carolina. The weather would be better, but career wise, this is the best thing.
Seamen jokes? Dude, I've been in the Navy for almost 14 years, I've heard them all ;D
With my training, yep, I'll be able to perform minor surgeries.

Just like I don't know words and/or terms from my profession. [roll]
I was just walking next to Randimus today. He's 2 inches taller than me and he's 5'11".
The short joke originated with Kni. Of course, he's going to say that I'm short cuz he's 6'4".
Why don't you two just get married?!?!
Hell, you already squabble like an old married couple.
I'm taller than both of them 8)

Congrats Chris. Sounds like you lucked out. Sub duty would be cool.
My dad currently lives in CT as well as my Aunt.
IZ, we all know, you didn't "just think" about rectal exams. I'm sure you've got IZ_ mental images of them all the time.

Congrats. I sailed on SSBN 608 for two years out of Guam, and a bunch of other boats that were out of Scotland between 1980 and 1984. Hope it works out for you!

I went to medical school with a former submarine corpsman. He knew his stuff.
Congratulations!

So, anyone near the Groton/New London area?
Yeah, Groton is the next town over from me. Lots of good riding around here. Post up when you get here, I'll point you in the right direction.
Shit, from what I've seen so far "next town over" is within walking distance!
CT is a small state....
i live on the opposite side of the state from where you're going to be,
and it would only take about an hour to get there...
the climate is very humid compared to where you're coming from...
i suggest A/C to acclimate your family...
The wife is currently looking into apartments in the Groton area. It's looking hard to find a place that accepts dogs let alone has a garage for the bike...
I'm surprised no one has used the official Navy knickname, "Pecker Checker". Congrats on becoming a bubblehead.
BTW: I was a snipe (MM) from '84 to '90 on the USS Dahlgren (DDG-43)
Oh I've heard that for years. Not only am I a corpsman, but also a Preventive Medicine Tech...

that is fancy term for the guy who passes out the condoms on the sub [cheeky]
I got a story for you.
When I was on my aircraft carrier, I was the one responsible for putting out the condoms before we hit a port.
I got a funny idea to put out three boxes with Small Medium and Large.
Guess which one emptied first?! [laugh]
One day, someone came and told me that the Large box was empty. So I went to refill it, by grabbing a couple handfuls from the Small box...
