Sucks.

That is all.

I am lucky, never had it, and hopefully never will. My wife has it, and I think it is 99% mental, and 1% physical.  She starts thinking about stuff, then mulls it over all night.

I never used to.

Life adds all sorts of 'enjoyment' at times that keeps the brain active.

Maybe it will take some of it away soon.   :-\

I usually sleep with the tube on.

If I don't I wake up...hell I wake up anyway after about 4 hours.

I set mine to turn off after an hour or so.

If I leave it on, it'll wake me up.
Woke up one time to the scene in Good Fellas where Danny DeVito and some other schmuck are getting beaten nearly to death and then buried.
That was disturbing.  :-\

Glass of wine?
Couple shots of Jager?  dr::

I do my obligatory share of drinking.  ;)

I think I just need to work more.

If I'm really busy in the shop and do long days I have better luck, like yesterday.

Did 10 hrs in the shop, a couple of hours shoveling snow, and helping with Zeke (T's back is bothering her)

Slept like a baby for 6 1/2 hours.

i spank it... ;D

actually i've been having a lot of trouble sleeping for the past 3 months or so. i don't think i've slept more than 3 hrs straight in a very long time. i just keep waking up, rolling over, waiting about 15-20 min and then falling asleep again.

my eye is also twitching like a beast. i blame work.

Stress causes me to stay up.  Once I'm in bed I don't have trouble sleeping.

I also have problems with small time zone changes (like West coast - East coast).  If it's a huge change, like going to Singapore or something, then I force myself to adapt right away.  But if it's just a little change, I stay up late at night on California time, then have to get up early on East coast time. :P

one more on the insomnia bus...

I tried melatonin, nyquil, even benadryl (as recommended by my physician cousin and a pharmacist friend of mine).

drinking myself blind doesn't work.

so I've sorta resigned myself to it. less stress wouldn't hurt, though.

well, the pills say to allow 7-8 hours for sleep. and I get up at 0400, so....

I usually go to bed at 9 or 10

I know what you mean DP, I pretty much live with it.  It's more of 10-20 minutes sleep-wake cycles all night long which is just as bad as not sleeping ~

I do fine on the "going to sleep" part but wake up around 3 a.m. and can't do anything more at that point.  It was fine when I taught a 6 a.m. aerobics class, but I haven't been doing that for the last year.

Pretty much the same here.  Good bourbon before bedtime, get sleepy, go to bed, sleep a good couple hours or so.  That's better than I get sometimes!

IV drip?

i go through boughts of stress related insomnia too, the last year has been good though.  i used to take two tylanol(sp?) PM and they would knock me out for the night, but if i didn't get the full 8 hours i would be pretty much retarded for the first few hours of work.

The only problem with taking Ambien for insomnia is........if it doesn't put you to sleep.

You start hullicinating from the effects.

Some use it as a recreational drug for this reason

So does Hydocodone...  I have visual AND auditory hallucinations on that stuff.  Imagine laying back, head hitting the pillow and Pink Floyd's On the Run starts blaring from 1000 different directions.  That'll mess with you a bit ~

Yeah, there is if you are using the medication for its intended purpose

That is an awful comparison.

Hydrocodone is a painkiller narcotic used to subdue pain; not allow you to sleep.

Ambien is a sleepaid and the intended purpose is to make you sleep, not zone you out.

I've been a light sleeper and chronic insomniac my entire life.  I used to have to sneak shots of bourbon as a kid to get to sleep sometimes.  It also helped to turn on the clothes dryer because the laundry room was close to my bedroom.  Now I use Tylenol PM, Nyquil, or any number of other sleep aides to get to sleep.  Doesn't guarantee I'll stay asleep though and if I wake up while under the influence I'm hosed because I usually can't get back to sleep.  One thing I found does work really well at putting me down is the Costco generic brand "Sleep Aide"; just one tiny pill about an hour before bed and I can only read for about 13.5 minutes before things get "swimmy".  They're like taking 2 Tylenol PM's though so the next day takes a lot of coffee/Monster drinks to get going.

I feel/live your pain brother.

If it's not chronic insomnia, the best thing I've found is not to fight it; for me at least, laying there in bed for hours not being asleep just makes it worse. If I've been awake for more than half an hour, I'll get up & do filing, surf the net, read, whatever until I start to feel drowsy again. Usually takes 45 minutes or so.

Bourbon works too.

Good luck -- Chronic is a whole different story, and if that's the case, listen to somebody who knows what they're talking about instead of me. Or just start with that step!

I think that's where my wife got mine.  But I'm all for trying it if it's different.

FWIW The Costco Sleep Aide works like elephant tranquilizers- which is to say overly effective.  The box says Doxylamine Succinate, 25mg.

I'm a really, really bad teeth grinder. In my case, I found that it's mostly related to my current stress level. I clench and grind so bad that after a really bad night, I'll have headaches for a day or two. Unfortunately, I haven't found a whole lot to relieve it, especially w/ my current work/family situation. And I can't really take sleep aids cause I get dependent on them too easily. I've been hooked on NyQuil, xanax, percoset (oops), codeine (big oops) and alcohol, all in the name of sleep.

The only thing that ever really helped was kicking caffeine. I kicked it for about 6 months, and it was the best sleep I've had in my life. The only problem was, I was asleep by 8-9 PM every night. No thanks. I'm not that damn old yet. And it was too hard to stay motivated during the day.

Nowadays, I just deal with it. I've gotten so used to living of 3-5 hours of sleep and feeling like shit in the AM that I don't think anything of it anymore.

High stress levels will deplete your body of certain nutrients.  Try a good cal/mag supplement in a 2:1 ratio, preferably with trace minerals too.  I bet within a week your symptoms will go away.  I have cured insomnia and teeth grinding in a lot of people by simply taking these supplements.

Insomnia and I go way back. I never was a good sleeper, then medical school got rid of whatever sleep hygiene I had at the time. Then my daughter got sick and for a couple of years I had little diurnal rhythm at all. Now I've got obstructive sleep apnea. Oh, well. It leaves time for DMF after the family have gone to sleep, since I rarely have a chance to log on during the day.

Folks, there's very little available over-the-counter that works for sleep unless you respond to melatonin (and you have to give that a couple of weeks to work while using it nightly) or to diphenhydramine (which makes many people feel and function the next morning as if a concrete mixer ran over their brain. Alcohol makes it easier to fall asleep, but will then make you much more prone to wake up and prevent you from getting deep or restorative sleep.

For most people, "sleep hygiene" (Google it) is the best answer. If you really have lousy sleep for a while, you should consider a polysomnographic (sleep) study. It's the ONLY way to diagnose the most common (and treatable) sleep disorders.

Um, opioids are narcotics... Nothing else really is, despite common misuse of the term.

Were you thinking of "hypnotic?" Hydrocodone is always a narcotic but not necessarily a hypnotic, and is certainly not intended to be used as a hypnotic.

Never heard of taking cal/mag supplements. Conversely, I usually try to do the opposite and whip up some protein deposits. Puts me to sleep every time. They may not, however, taste so great in your coffee (and your coffee may smell like bleach).   [coffee]  [puke]

I've experimented with lots of sleep-aids, and most of them make me feel drugged the next day.  A friend gave me a Lunesta about six months ago, I cut it in half, and got 8 hours of great sleep and woke feeling refreshed.  I pop half a Lunesta whenever I've gotta get some real sleep.  Most docs will give you a sample, or write you a scrip.
