Title: Frame plugs for the tail - crazy, nice, new, homemade ?
Post by: stopintime on September 03, 2008, 02:28:45 PM
I'm doing things with the beer tray and will end up with exposed frame holes.
What do I put in there?

( [evil]no, no, no - mine doesn't fit in there. No, I didn't try!)

OEM plastic bar ends.   They the one cheap OEM Ducati part.  As an alternative, some people use shotgun shells.

I think the 20G shells fit in there...

I got caught up in a months-long drum circle.  We meditated, sprinkled each other with pachouli, whined about our parents and all the injustice in the world, and spent our waking moments blowing each other. Ya know, the usual.

Welcome back!

As for the shotgun shells, you think I could knock out the spent primers and wire in some LED's? Use those for my turn signals?

Seriously, tho? Bar ends, bar end weights, go to Home Depot and get some plastic end caps. Your call.

Whatever you decide to use, clean up the raw ends of the frame and seal them with something to keep rust at bay. Clear nail polish works pretty well.

Not bar end weights, the cheap plastic bar ends you see on low end bikes like the 620 are what he's talking about...

I got caps from the screw drawer section of my local hardware store. 20 cents and looks like a stock part. fits perfect, comes in many sizes, used other ones to plug the mirror holes when I switched to crgs

Another +1 to the shotgun shells.

Cut the plastic off of a 20 gauge shell and tap the brass into the hole with a hammer and socket.

They fit perfect and look pretty cool.

I put some real carbon fiber bar end plugs from a road bicycle.  Like 8 bucks and they look sweet.  A lot of options just depends on the look you want.

Something like this:

http://www.stockcap.com/prod_detail.asp?id=167&cat=13

I searched on "Plastic caps", that's just one result.

Better yet, instead of browsing the web, browse those pull-out drawers at the hardware store  ;D

After I chopped my tail, I took the piece I cut off to a local bicycle store to find plugs that would fit.  The bike mechanic had a shoe box full of plastic bar plugs.  I found a a set of half-dome plugs that look great, and the mechanic gave them to me for free.

I used rubber corks from the hardware store.  They fit perfect.

looks like the size in the middle there. exactly what I'm talking about.

+1 on pillaging the screw drawer section.

Celli,
Where did you find those plugs on the site?

That's not the correct link, but close [thumbsup]

This is it:

http://www.desmorados.com/shop/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=349_139_545&products_id=1433<br>

Those are probably the ones I'll get, even though the shotgun shells would be better on a more naked hooliganish bike.

Both are pretty nice, and in my opinion better than the shot gun look. Not only do they rust if left unprotected, its a little OCC on most bikes.
