Title: 07 S2R1K - Need help picking an exhaust
Post by: ProTeal55 on September 04, 2008, 10:03:23 AM
Hey,

ProTeal55 (a.k.a Joe) here from Chicago.
New member to this board, but I am all over the www.
I also am one of the three founding members of http://www.HalfFastChicago.com (http://www.HalfFastChicago.com)

I am the proud owner of a 07 S2R1K that is in need of an exhaust.
I was running the "udder" open for the past 3000 miles and was happy with the
sound (but not the looks). On a whim I put the stock exhaust back on and was amazed at
how well the bike runs/pulls compared to the open udder. So now I know I need to sack up and actually
buy a true system..

Here are my requirements:
1. Want a full system (to get rid of that friggin udder thing once and for all)
2. Would like to not cover the back wheel (love the look of the SSS and wheel exposed)
3. Want the bike LOUD, with the typical Ducati rumble that everyone knows and loves
4. Want the bike to run well (as good as it does now)
5. Needs to be able to be on a lowered bike (as mine is)

I am kinda diggin the Zard system that has one pipe on each side of the license plate frame, but it has a very heavy/bulky look to it. I really like the "lite" look of the open udder (minus the udder itself of course). I am a fan of less is more, and bought this bike to slowly strip it down to the
bare minimum.

Anyone offer up some suguesstions ?
I look forward to being an active member of this site, and helping out when and
where I can..

- Joe

You may find this thread useful. Lots of pics of S2R 1000's with exhaust systems:

Theres only 2 options right now for open wheel exahusts. Zard high mounts and Quat-D Exbox

Or you can go to bassani.com order some pipes and make some straight pipes, throw in a baffel and cut a small piece from your S pipe to make a cross over, tack it together and call it a day. Or just wait till motocreations makes em for the S2R1000 (seems like it should be here by the end of the year)

edit: Sparks makes a high mount as well.

Quat-D Exbox is awesome and does not require any ECU ajustments.

Thanks for all the fast responses guys (very much appreciated)..
I am not a fan of the Ex-Box one bit.  I have allready lowered the front of my bike about 1 1/2'', and plan to level out the rear. If I went with the Ex-Box the thing would scrape all over the place.

Does anyone make a undertail exhaust for these scoots (ala the factory Jap bikes are coming with from the factory) ?

no. and if your gonna lower your bike 1 1/2 in the rear to match, DEFINTELY not a good idea.

by the way, how did you manage to lower it 1 1/2 in the front? i cant go more than 15mm without the oil cooler hitting my fender when the fork is at full compression (-10mm before bottoming out)

I havent measured exactly how much I lowered the front (maybe it's closer to a 1'').
I have a set of Motowheels clip-on's (with the 1/5'' risers) that I mounted above the top tree.
So I figure the bodies of those should be around a 1'' or so.
Havent had any issues with the front tire crashing into anything.

Have an adj. lowering link in the garage for the rear of the bike, just havent made
time to install it yet..

1" is too much to me. I wanted to lower the front end and throw on clip ons  ontop, i like the turn in much better, but after bouncing my front up and down, if i placed my finger on the oil cooler,my fender comes close to touching my hand. if i droped it another 10mm, my finger would get slammed.

might want to watch out... especially if your forks havent been resprung, you could do some damage if you bottom out.

Thanks for the heads up.
I have had the bike this way for the past 3000 miles and everything seems
to be fine. I will post some pics of the scoot once I get home later tonite..

no issues with the oil cooler... [thumbsup]

Did you lower the rear of the bike (or is it still stock height) ?

Good reason to take the fender off, like me!

Here's a pic of the bike (as it currently sits) -->

I have sience ditched the front fender as well..

I am kinda diggin the Zards, bu they need to be shorter.
Can you cut down the cans (to get them "tighter") to the bike ?

no, its stock (although set up for me)
really?  ive heard otherwise...

i am running the x-box without problem. no ecu adjsutments

btw,.......i ran with the udder only for almost 4k. only reason i went to the x-box was that it was too loud with just the udder. i felt stunned after a long ride

I know exactly what ya mean about the long ride thing with the open udder.
I dont think it is a matter of it being too loud, just wear the noise is (directly under your ear).
I want my bike to be louder than the open udder, but just have it exit behind me..

Another one that keeps the wheel open is the Leo Vince 2 into 1 ... slip on
(http://i34.tinypic.com/289rr.jpg)

... or full

This system is cool.... Leo Vince 2 into 1. I might go this route for my S2R1000. I only wish the bracket supporting the can did not wrap around it.  [thumbsup]

How does the Leo full system compared to (sound wise) say to a Zard system with no baffles ?
Can that can be cut down to make it shorter ?
I want the system I end up with to be loud, and have that noticable from a block away Ducati rumble.

I am also very concerned with the overall looks of the system I end up getting. I want it to flow with the bike, and not be the main focal point on the bike. The Leo Vince just looks like a can stuck to some cool (which I like) head pipes. I come from the mind set that these bikes (and all bikes) should be clean/simple/low to the ground/and loud as hell. My CB450 I built awhile back shows the "mindset" I am talking about..
Everything that wasnt needed on the bike was removed. The pipes flow around the motor, under the seat, and exit behind the riders back right leg. All buttons/switches are either gone or moved to the h.lite bucket. I want to follow a similar "style" as I build my Monster..

Then go Arrow friend.

Go on youtube and you will see some S2R's with Arrows. They sound sick.

Does Arrow make any other systems that leave the back rear wheel open ?
Love the system you have (and am sure it sounds mean as hell), I just cant cover that pretty
back wheel..

There was a picture somewhere of a guy who'd done this, but I can't find it now. Here's a bad photoshop pic anyhow:

How's the sound of one of these systems compared to say a open Termi kit ?

I never heard a Leo Vince but they look good.

Here's my Zards. Long but I don't mind.

Pardon my stupidity on this, but when people say they "cut the cans' are they just cutting the cans and re-installing the end caps ?
Is it really that easy ? If thats the case I think some cut down Zards are in my future..

That's all it is. But one thing to consider with the Zards, which may not be obvious from photos, is that the canisters gently taper wider from front to back, so maybe some end-cap modification would be required as well. But hey, just about anything is do-able.

not unless your me and some how ( i still cant figure it out) managed to chip the can, its a perfect cut with an ant crimp bite on it.

i run open udder too. i got so many headaches, its what caused me to start wearing earplugs. I cored my exahust 1/2 way but im gonna weld up some straight pipes instead.
