Title: Whoa, good times are over, Aus $ is now under .80 us!
Post by: Spider on September 10, 2008, 02:54:34 PM
how quickly did THAT drop, it's gone down another 8% in the past 10 days.

I think that has concluded this years purchases for the bike, other than the current box of bits at Monsterparts.

we are heading back towards the Aussie paso!  ;D

Goodbye Öhlins, it was nice knowing you   :'(

yep, the party is over for the moment - hope everyone made the most of it...I certainly went on a spending spree for the last few months!
I was watching an interview on Bloomberg (US Financial show on Foxtel) a couple months ago and they had a guy saying that the Aussie dollar would DEFINITELY drop as the economic factors that caused it to rise were no longer there - apparently he was spot on!

For my trip away I bought USD some 2 months ago at 96ish. Cashed in my left overs last week at 84ish. I made 10 cents on the dollar ish... I had a bit left over so made money (about 10 cents on the dollar).... [thumbsup]

Should have hung on for another week ....  >:(

First time ever......  [thumbsup]  [thumbsup]  ;D  ;D

The main reason it dipped was all that cash going out of the country from OZ monsterers buying bling.
So stop whining, you bought it on yourselves.  ;)

And the thing is, it's not like the US dollar is rallying - it's still weak against other currencies.

Why is ours tanking so badly?

Thanks to Anthony Keane from News.com.au

Some Facts about the Aussie Dollar.

So what has caused such a sharp U-turn?

Firstly, the Reserve Bank of Australia has been making serious noises about lowering the official interest rate, with its first cut expected today. Second, commodity prices such as oil and base metals have dropped heavily amid fears of global economic slowdown.

"The Australian dollar is still seen as a commodity currency,'' Dr Oliver says.

Third, the US dollar has bounced back against most other countries' currencies in recent weeks.

These factors have combined to force the Aussie dollar to a seven-month low, although it should be put into perspective. A US85c exchange rate is still much stronger than the levels below US50c it hit in 2001, back when it earned itself nicknames such as "Pacific peso'' and "little Aussie bleeder''.

For the economy as a whole it's good news, even though it's bad news for travellers,'' says AMP Capital Investors chief economist Shane Oliver.

"At US98.5c it was bad for the competitiveness of Australian companies,'' Dr Oliver says. Now, exporters will find customers can better afford their goods.
