Title: I'm a tard . . . need PC help
Post by: SacDuc on September 10, 2008, 05:59:49 PM

How the make the beast with two backs do I uninstall IE? I would like to have it banished to hell if at all possible. Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel doesn't do it.

installing an alternate browser and setting it to the default isn't enough?

fwiw, you'll still need ie for windows update to get all your product updates. that's the ONLY thing i use ie for on my windows box.

yep

IE5 is an integrated part of XP

you can reformat and not update IE and it will obviously stay at 5

then just never open it and use mozilla or whatever you traitors to the covenant use these days

I use Firefox as my default.

But IE still constantly runs in the background. How do I make it only open on my command?

Have you checked Task Manager to see if there's an IE process still running?

Here's a quote from here: http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-10166_7-6219945-1.html (http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-10166_7-6219945-1.html)

There is a way to remove Internet Explorer from Windows, but it's not worth the hassle. Whether or not you realize it, you actually do need IE; it's used throughout Windows. For example, Outlook, Word, Windows Explorer--basically any apps that need to render HTML--all rely on IE to some degree. If you remove IE, which requires editing your system registry files (something I don't recommend unless you have experience and a good backup first), you'll then have to associate these apps with another Web rendering product in order to view, for example, HTML-enabled e-mail. Not impossible, but I'm sure you have better use for your time. Instead, simply drag and drop your IE icon to the trash and just forget about it.

It mentions editing the registry. Have you done that at all? I can find what entries need to be edited if you haven't tried it yet.

I actually don't HAVE to delete the thing. I would just like to have it NEVER run and/or connect to the internet without me telling it to do so.

Possible?

wait, what's running? explorer.exe or iexplore.exe?

iexplore.exe is internet explorer...

explorer.exe is the windows program manager or windows shell.

if iexplore.exe won't stop running, i'd be concerned. explorer.exe, on the other hand, is kinda required.

How concerned should I be? I have that ever reliable Windows firewall running. So I'm all safe and secure right? Right?  [roll]

Ran ad-aware. This did nothing. You are going to tel me I have a virus or something aren't you?

I really think it has something to do with the myriad of other programs that use IE (as mentioned in the quote I posted).  :-\  I don't know how you can force it to ask before starting tho.

But I'm not an IE guru. So sorry.  ???

that's weird

iexplore.exe is just the interface to the IE software.

it is hard to unlink the libraries that lock IE ot the OS

but if iexplore.exe is running in the background, you have something else going on

i use firefox exclusively -- no iexplore.exe is running at all

something else is kicking it up.  i vote for adware or malware.

I've used a program called hijackthis successfully.

It used to be better, but it was sold to trendmicro.

If you use it be careful what you choose to delete.

Its actually really useful to have out in the field. I just happen to hate IE with the passion of a thousand burning suns.

honestly - you probably have spyware or malware -

ie should not be running in the background... **didnt your mom tell you p*rn was bad**

There are a couple of programs I tell people to run to check for spyware/malware - all free dont worry

I will even list a free virus program - if you act NOW!

SpyBot Search and Destroy  (select download - and follow the links and such)
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

LavaSoft Adware Free
http://lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

Emsisoft A squared free
http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/

AVG Virus
http://free.avg.com/ww.download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition

download all applications - update said applications THAN the most important part is rebooting and then starting in safe more (non networking non anything straight safe mode) log in as admin - and run each program separately

Tell me how that goes - yes it is long and arduous but you can let them run and walk away a squared and avg will take the longest.  Yes I am a certfied computer geek - and yes this is common and no I am not part of geek squad or whatever the fark that is...

anyway any more computer questions just re-direct them to me -

that's my guess. sometimes, a spyware/malware removal app can extract the offender. sometimes you can track down the errant process and surgically remove it from your system. sometimes you just plain have to reinstall and be more careful next time.

i have these on my system and just keep them running

spybot gets 99% of things i think

adware gets the other 1%

also, close all your browsers, start a CMD screen and type "netstat -b" at the command line to show if somethign is calling the browser and connecting to a site.

"netstat -b -v" will show you the sequence of command to call iexplore if it is connecting to an external site

click START
click RUN
type CMD <enter>
type netstat -b <enter>
or
type netstat -b -v <enter>

that will show you IF anything is connecting to an outside address thru iexplore

If you had a firewall like ZoneAlarm you could tell it not to allow IE to access the internet. Not sure that would solve your problem though.

+1 on the spyware/ malware likelihood.

Just to feed your paranoia, there are 101 possible causes,

http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/process/iexplore.exe.html

iexplore.exe should not normally be running, I think, unless you are browsing. I have two copies running under processes as I have two browser windows open as i write this  8)

If it says IEXPLORE (uppercase) or iexplorer (additional r) then sounds like spyware, correct name should be iexplore.exe

A bunch of useful utilities can be downloaded from:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/default.aspx

(its Microsoft so its safe!)

You want the "Process Utilities" section and then download "Process Explorer". Run the program.

Run your mouse over the iexplore.exe entry. It should show a path of "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" It should also say "Microsoft Corporation".

If it does not then it looks suspicious.

Of course since it is running you will be unable to delete it, so boot in safe mode, and move the file to known location do not delete at first. Reboot the PC if it works normally then you can delete the file completely from the system.

I don't accept any reponsibility for any damage caused by manually deleting files from your system.

Better to buy an Antivirus software pacakge and keep it updated.
