Title: Too much oil?
Post by: S2K on September 10, 2008, 06:27:19 PM
Just got my 600 mile service done today on my 696.  Got it home and was looking it over, found that it has a bit too much oil in it.  When the bike is level it is about 10mm above the sight glass, not the high mark, but all the way out of view.  Not sure if I should drain the excess out, take it back and let them do it, or would it be OK to leave it like that.  Common sense tells me they wouldn't have put the high level mark there for no reason and it probably needs to be at that level.

If it's above the high mark, it needs to have some taken out. It's not good to have too much oil in a motor.

Just because they did it that way, doesn't mean they know anything at all  ;)

Go get it fixed.

Get one of those plastic containers with a pump dispenser (such as a shampoo bottle) and suck it out. As long as the tube is reasonably long it's an easy job.

I just noticed that with it running its right at the top line, think I'll drain a little out anyway though.

Those max/min lines are for when the engine is off and the oil has had time to drain down to the bottom again.

I've used a turkey baster with some tubing on the tip....works great.

Suggest you call the owner of the place that did the service and let him know you're not pleased....Ducati didn't put the hi/lo marks on the case as decorations...

Yeah, really, its common practice to keep the oil at the low or mid point but definitely not the max point.  You can get a pump siphon from Pep Boys for like $5.  That is the best method I think.
