ok, i have never used an ipod and therefore have never had to connect one to my pc.
the only cable my g/f has for hers is connected to the power plug and for the life of me i can't figure out how to get that to work.
i'm leaning hevily towards the side of "she lost a cable and doesn't remember having it"
you should be able to disconnect the cord from the wall plug.
one end should be USB and the other is the connection to the ipod
if you are talking about this

and this

thern you have everything you need. disconnect the usb cable from the power plug, connect to your ipod and then plug the usb into the computer.
note:
if it's a different computer it's going to sync to the different library.
you will loose the music that may be on the ipod

yes, that's what i'm talking about, only the non ipod end is NOT a usb connection
i feel better now that i found that out. i'm already packed, otherwise i'd post a pic of it.
google came through again
the part that connects to the power adapter looks like the plug in the front of the pic.

Its a firewire port. Macs came with firewire ports, not sure if they still do and i'm not sure if pcs do. My laptops dont have them.
Many electronics stores (Best Buy, etc) have the usb cable that you can use to plug it into your computer if you don't have a firewire port. If you get one, you can charge the ipod off of any pc. Also, Best Buy has chargers as well that fit the usb cable. Like this: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7455158&type=product&id=1125464954921 (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7455158&type=product&id=1125464954921)
This may also be a good alternative http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=6243905&st=firewire&type=product&id=1069301596363 (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=6243905&st=firewire&type=product&id=1069301596363)
It has the ipod dock on one end, then splits to a firewire (for your charger) and usb (for your pc). I used to have one. If I still have it, you want it?
Edit: Its sold out online at BestBuy. Here's an Apple store link for ya: http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9688G/A (http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9688G/A)

Are the connectors the same as the one shown in the photo? I have firewire on my IBM but it is unpowered so it was no use for charging, just ended up buying a USB cable instead.

i've never used my firewire port.

IIRC, some video cameras used to come with firewire cables.
IEEE 1394 Ports "Firewire" "i Link" "Lynx
Its good for Audio & Video applications, Most Digital Camcorders have a Firewire Port.
