Title: New Mod Day Thread
Post by: eltristo on September 13, 2008, 07:45:47 PM
So it seems at least two (2) of us have suspension that needs installin', and I have a tail to mess with.  Is the MacHoist offer still open for fork fiddlin'?
When might we want to get down-n-dirty?

won't you need to fix the tail before you can ride it anywhere to swap your forks?

Mac Hoist offer is still open. As a matter of fact I have to tighten the steering neck bearings on the Monster. I've been meaning to do that for a year or so I guess.  [roll]

I will likely do that on a Saturday the week after next. Sept. 27th.

I'll try to get that day off, or at least limit the time I spend at work.

So I've been doing my tail, mounting the new parts, etc.  All is kinda getting toward ready, but now a seemingly insurmountable problem: the turn signal bolts are too long and are hitting the frame.  I'd cut them, but the wires run thru em, and there is no way I'll cut the metal and not the wires.  I thought i'd drill thru the frame, but my drill is underpowered and my dremel doesn't have the diameter.  Poo!

is everything sorted?

we can monkey around w/it tomorrow after work if you need to...

Unsorted!  And I'm probably working all day tomorrow.  More poo!

Take the lights out/off and pull the wires through the post. Cut post to length and clean threads. Reinstall light & wires.

Monkeying around is definitely better than going ape. Though both are decidedly simian.

Sorry to rain on anyone's parade here. If we work on the bikes in my shop we'll have to drink after the work is done. No working while drinking.  [leo] That's OK in your own garage or carport but I have to be strict about what goes on in the shop. Sorry about that.

I have a funny story about that.
Well not funny at the time, but funny now that the damage has been corrected.  [drink]

I have managed to reserve Saturday, 27 September as a day of no work, so's I can work.  On the bike. I think this is a good thing.  Tedrow, you planning on hitting your suspension as well?

Oh, and at least a few beers on me. Even if it has to be after we're done.

Somehow after a few bottles, you begin to get really cavalier about reassembling things. Luckily I did the brakes first (still sober), and ended with the clutch IIRC.

That's what the clutch on my 999 looked like when I took it apart a year and a half ago. Whoever had worked on it previously did the same bonehead move putting that friction disc on the outside. Badda Boo, Badda Bing -- just like yours it was scored all over the place. I was putting on a Speedymoto pressure plate & cover anyway -- I just had too add a set of clutch plates.

Although I don't have a slipper clutch on the Monster I did just get a Surflex clutch kit for it. Still in the plastic wrap until this Saturday. Whee!

Sudden, last minute concern:  Is there going to be a problem with mounting my coffins on clip-ons?  I feel like I have heard something to that effect, but, now that I'm looking, I can't find anything.

Title: Re: New Mod Day Thread

I think it might have had something to do with clearing the mini fairing, but I'm not sure...

only problems I heard of were coffins and the SM bars... too tight of a fit on the 1st gen bars.

if it don't work, you can buy the goldlines off of me  ;D

I think it might have had something to do with clearing the mini fairing, but I'm not sure...

his bike's got a dart, not stock... and since they mount to the headlight, not by the gauges, mounting the screen shouldn't be much of an issue

Title: Re: New Mod Day Thread

Yea, you could buy the gold-lines from him.  Then you could buy the CRG levers that are currently on my SC.  ;)

BTW, what are you doing with the forks that are coming off of the 750? I may know of a home for them.

Title: Re: New Mod Day Thread
Post by: eltristo on September 25, 2008, 04:02:51 PM
They have a minor issue with the sliders tearing up fork seals.  I have another set as well, though.  They have a ding by where the top triple clamp would be.  I figure, worst case, I can probably make the two into one good set? I hope?

Title: Re: New Mod Day Thread
Post by: MadDuck on September 25, 2008, 07:20:47 PM
Wally's sliders keep tearing up his fork seals so I guess he wouldn't be any further ahead with yours.  I did my part, I asked.

Title: Re: New Mod Day Thread
Post by: eltristo on September 25, 2008, 08:32:22 PM
Are the sliders different diameter between the 50mm and 53mm?

Title: Re: New Mod Day Thread
Post by: teddy037.2 on September 25, 2008, 11:27:14 PM
IIRC, they're both 43mm.

and if I ever get off my tubby ass, I'll have some non-leaky 620 forks to unload soon. bigger axle, though, so he might be SOL

:edit: don't both your fork sets have the newer caliper spacing?  it's be the same boat as mine then... and mac's bud has a carby 900 as well, so... unless he's looking to upgrade

Title: Re: New Mod Day Thread
Post by: MadDuck on September 26, 2008, 08:45:16 AM
Oooops! You are so right. I forgot about that minor little thing called axle size. Duh? Actually, I think Wally would be OK rebuilding his forks again if he'd buy the good seals from Ducati and not go for some cheap who-knows-from-where seals on Ebay. But, hey, aside from some snide remarks here and there I just help turn the wrenches.  [laugh]

Just got home from the "shakedown ride."  Interesting.  I definitely need to move the clip-ons out a bit.  Otherwise, and I know this is unlikely, but the front end is already fantastic!  It was soaking up bumps at speed that the old forks never did; bumps that still cause the rear end to go ka-thump!  Could just be that the old forks were REALLY shot.  Either way, it's already better.  And if it still gets better than this....  [thumbsup] [thumbsup] [thumbsup] [thumbsup] [thumbsup]

You bet.  Funny thing is that right now I have to grab a spare truck and drive into town to pick up one of my best friends who's stranded right by the shop and bring him back to Kailua. Then I'll hop on the Monster and ride back to the shop so I'm guessing shortly after Noon. Plus Wally brought the dead ST2 down yesterday so he might show up sometime but nothing definite on that yet.

Rick/Teddy, what size clutch slave cylinder did you guys put on your bike?  I know that both the 28mm and 30mm will reduce the pressure at the lever, but have heard that the 30 sometimes makes the clutch a bit harder to modulate.  Thoughts?

You got me there. As far as I knew there was only few differences based on whether or not it was a single phase charging system (old guys), a three phase charging system (starting in say '98) and then somewhere along the line (2003?) they changed again. None of the three were interchangable I believe. I could be wrong. Worth a search I suppose.  The slave that I got for the 999 was slightly different from the slave for the Monster. The slave for my Monster doesn't work on Wally's Monster (a '94 model).

On the 916 I had a 28mm, which was hard enough to modulate until I got used to it. So I imagine the 30mm would be even harder to modulate. 30mm has easier lever pull, but it takes a greater movement of the lever to move the pushrod the same distance. If I were to do it again, I'd stick with the 28mm.

You can also go with 4 stiffer springs instead of 6 OE springs. On the 999 I have the OE slave, but with 4 stainless springs. Net result = easier pull, excellent modulation, no unwanted slipping.

Good counterpoint.  Thanks Bob.
