My phone's first sync is taking effing forever.
It's been going like 5 hours ?!
WTF?!
2.1 was released friday and fixes that [thumbsup]
Idk-maybe try putting it in a sack with some rocks?
As of 2.1 mine takes about 30 seconds. Do the update.
Do you have the new 3g or the earlier generation models? I have the 2nd generation 8gb and when I upgraded to the newer 2.0 program it took a long time, I don't know about 5 hours but... I am going to assume you have decent internet connection and a computer with a few gigs of RAM. What did the pop-ups tell you it is/was doing?
+1 for if you haven't loaded up the new software... do that immediately.

FWIW the update fixes a lot. [thumbsup]
I have the 3g and the first thing I did was upgrade to 2.1 so that's done. It's still syncing contacts and it's been going at least 12 hrs.
Im sure this isn't right.
It will make a nice doorstop ;D

Good idea but it might be a bit short. Maybe if you wedge it in the door jamb then you can use as a doorstop that way. [thumbsup]

uhh, it isn't. :o The long part of the update had to do with backing up/installing downloaded applications from the App Store. Unless you've got several thousand contacts, syncing them shouldn't take much longer than a few seconds. I'd disconnect your iphone and try again. If it persists, put the iphone in recovery mode (google it, but I think it's home button + sleep button for ~5 seconds) and restore it.
Im surprised nobody mentioned 1-800-MY-IPHONE which helped some. At least we got email working. Turns out my version of Outlook (2000) is too old :P
Im seriously considering switching to gmail.

Oh god, I hate outlook, I haven't used that POS in years.
If you go with gmail (or anything that doesn't support push), make sure to set it up IMAP, POP sucks.
10-4
FWIW i had 534 contacts. I exported them to a .csv file, uploaded that to gmail contacts and it synced in seconds.

People still use outlook?
I am voting one of the webgeeks to smack you around and tell you what aps you should be running.
I'd bet your computer is 6+ years old.
3 actually
:P
On the topic of syncing, I've updated my 3G iPhone to 2.1 also. Yes, it's noticeably faster in the sync department but I've noticed that it actually does not sync a couple of contacts that:
(1) I've altered within a pre-existing contact on the phone (i.e. it's not a new contact I manually entered on the phone, and which had synced OK in the past);
(2) I've added in the Mac's Address Book.
It appears to sync everything else OK. Just not a couple of contacts particularly.
Anyone notice the same? Solutions? ??? ???
monsterlover: if you go with gmail imap, be sure to google for setup directions. There are some options to set so that "delete" actually "archives" instead of deletes, etc.
Noted, thanks!
Turns out my normal work email will work, but I have to shut off smpt if i get in a wifi spot to keep mail working. has to do with the way our stupid server handles email.
that's why i considered switching to gmail, because that works fine wifi or not. I dont want to have to mess with the phone to make my email show up
Because it's not a Treo.
Phone is working pretty well. It flat out obliterates my Verizon PDA phone I had last (XV6900 touch)
glad to hear you got it worked out ML [thumbsup]
I bent it to my will ;D
