Title: Pipe Chop Pics
Post by: SaltLick on September 22, 2008, 05:36:03 PM
Decided to get a pair of stock pipes and chop them up and see what happens.  Heres some pics of the end result....total length of the pipes now is 11.5 inches i did the full mod, painted them a satin black. They sound awesome! It was really a learning experience though. First pipe took forever....second pipe took about an hour. Its like anything else, once you figure out how to do it once its a breeze after that....well sorta. Those dam end caps the welds on them suck ass plain and simple.  Anyways, im glad i did it!
Ah yeah officer, these are the stock pipes......look you can see the disclaimer printed on the side!

come to think of it, i have a set of stock pipes for a 99 M900 city. a few scuffs but if someone wants them to do a chop/paint job on just pay for the shipping and they're yours.

Looks cool!  question...once the pipes were gutted, did you put in any baffles and packing or are they just now hollow shells?  I'd love to hear them sometime.

I've got a pair 3/4 of the way finished and was debating whether to put them on. As I have Arrows on my 620 now, I was thinking of selling them and was wondering if the chopped stock exhaust would sound as good as my Arrows.  :P

I'm still undecided, but yours look great, I was going down the exact same route with the matt black outer sleeve.  [thumbsup]

The way it's done, well how I did it, you knock the outer sleeve down, grind off the welds holding the end caps on  >:( >:(, put the outer sleeve back into place, cut 4-5 inches off the length and I also cut some of the internal pipe back into the muffler so you can't see it when looking into the end of the exhaust, push the sleeve back so you can put the end caps back on with rivets, then put the outer sleeve back into it's original position and install back on bike.

How does that grab ya?

If you're the Philip that did the Castle Rock ride with us a few weeks ago you heard them on my 620.  I was the yellow Monster . . . then again maybe you didn't hear them . . .

Question... Are those pipes upside down? Is the writing meant to be on the top or underneath/

Either way looks good.

I really dig your front sprocket cover.

Decided to do this one myself on my 620 after seeing your pics and one other on here who had left instructions and a video.  They do sound incredible for a no money modification!

Sweet!

Hey Salty.....how is the bike sans front fender workin' for ya?  I took mine off to replace brake lines...dig the look, but could not stand all the debris it kicked up on to me.  Rain felt like someone was spraying me with a water hose!

No front fender sucks. If you get caught in the rain your screwed.

If you're caught in the rain you're getting wet with or without a front fender.
They look great without the fender.
