I got laughed at by some hot chicks at a stop light because my clutch is so noisy. I'm guessing they thought my scoot was broken. That was not cool. Yes they were blond. No I did not get pics.
Better than getting laughed at by some redneck in a shitty rapist van because you stalled it out a stop sign... :bang
Ah, who cares? Surely you wouldn't be interested in chicas who don't know what a dry clutch looke/sounds like...even if they're hot. Right? ;:|
A wheelie from the stop sign would have cured that laughter :D (I'm not a big wheelie-r though so I probably would have just ignored them)
I am still undecided if I like the sound of the dry clutch. I love the feel of it on my monster but I have been hesitant to open it up. I was at a dealer last Saturday getting service and they had a 999 with an open clutch. That thing was soo friggen loud it was annoying. But later on another guy picked up his 748 with an open clutch and it sounded nice. Not as loud but still noticeable.
What determins how loud your clutch is? Sorry for the noob question. ???
That's the only thing I wish my 750 had. I love the sound. I'm guessing different covers give different sound levels ~
JM
my 748 is completely open no cover and I don't hear it really, but i wear ear plugs :D
A guy at the local beginning of season riding party had a 1098 with an open cover and it sounded really nice ~
JM
I'm a dry clutch fan too, couldn't give a crap what other people think about it. ;D
The louder the better!!!! :e:v
I'm not too partial to the sound of the dry clutch, but it was iconic that's for sure.

usually whether or not you replaced the perfectly good stock clutch cover with an aftermarket fugly one

A few things. As noted, an open clutch cover will allow more sound out. Also wear on the friction plates/basket will allow the plates to rattle more - thus more noise. Different plate and basket materials have some effect too, but it's usually tonal not just volume
A plate stack and basket with close fits will be pretty quiet, where as a worn set of plates can sound like a handful of bolts in a coffee can.

It's a monster, the whole point is replacing perfectly good stuff with aftermarket stuff! wt:
Hey just be glad they looked at you, if you were on a Jap bike they would of ignored ya!!
I wish I had a dry clutch to get laughed at. :(
How do you know they were not giggling with glee? I offer that they thought you and your bike were hot and they
wanted to ask you to do a three-some but thinking of asking you made them giggly. As a general rule all monster riders are hot,
male or female, and very attractive to the opposite sex. I bet that they are kicking themselves right now for not asking you wt:

I was getting on my bike the other day and some dude in some shiny car (seriously, I can't remember the make, but it was something pretty nice), and he was telling his friend/father/older person "see, it's got the dry clutch"...
Bike wasn't started, otherwise I'd never have heard them over all the tambourine racket. ;:|

Oh yeah....well you...oh nevermind. It is a new board and all..
Sometimes the loud clakity..clakity..clakity sound will annoy me simply because it's nice to just ride incognito, something that is very difficult with a full set of Termi's and an open clutch.
That being said, everyone who sees it generally has someting positive to say about it, except the Ducati haters, so I've always just left it open.

;D
Quote from: Mduc on May 09, 2008, 06:17:57 AM

Two main things will determine clutch noisiness: Clutch basket and friction plates.
If you have a steel basket, with steel backed friction plates, and an open cover, then the racket will be insane! :bang The old sockets in a washing machine saying.
If you run a steel basket with alloy backed plates it will be less. And an alloy basket with alloy plates will be even quieter. wt:
The alloy is a softer metal, so it will have a softer "rattle" to it.
Now depending on the type of cover you're running, that will also have an effect on the level of noise. Open covers will always make for a louder clutch.
Always try to avoid running steel plates in an alloy basket. the tabs on the plates will start to mash grooves in the basket edges, and this can cause erratic clutch operation, and hard shifting.
Hope this helps.
I got my picture taken by a couple of hot chicks in an SUV once... :)

With the sound comming from my exhaust and clutch I never would have heard them.
Might'a been a good time to take off a glove and fling a booger at 'em right before you sped off.
...should have laughed back at her staring at her hair....THAT would have freked her out ;D

There is a mod you can do
Well I know some of you m600 and m750 and s2r owners are always wanting the rattly clutch like some of us have. Well you can as can be proved by the owner of this 848.
Enjoy

Until one of them gave me an annoyed look and pointed to the car on my left that was full of their hot friends whom they were actually waving at......Owned.
The fact that you use port, starboard, fore, and aft in everyday conversation won't help ;D
I have a carbon half cover with Barnett steel plates on the stock basket. Yes its loud. The fact that they laughed and then rolled up their windows was less than cool. I am thinking of an aluminum basket and plates set up. Anybody running one?

Think of it as a "qualifier". Chicks that don't know how cool a dry clutch with an open basket is are a waste of time. The good news is that you didn't even have to talk to them to find that out. ;:|
The clutch noise is a pretty simple concept that's easy to understand: The friction plates have metal tabs that fit into metal slots in the clutch basket, and the tightness of the fit is generally imperfect. As the engine spins the tabs are driven back and forth in their slots, which makes a noise consistent with what you would expect a dozen metal tabs hammering into the sides of a dozen metal slots to sound like. Obviously, the clutch cover covers a lot of this up, and an open cover doesn't.
Quieter clutches have tighter tolerances, and louder clutches have looser tolerances (which lead to the tabs hammering harder into the sides of the slots). Clutches with perfect fits between tabs and slots (i.e. no free play, the tab fills the slot entirely) make almost no noise at all.
For example, this clutch is extremely quiet: http://www.desmotimes.com/product4.htm
Most clutches start out with a mediumly tight tolerance between the tabs and the slot, and get progressively looser and louder as you put on miles. By 6k or so, the clutch is louder than your exhaust with an open cover. With the above-linked clutch, by 6k you are still quieter than a brand new stock clutch. They accomplish that by using smaller slots, then custom grinding the individual tabs to the exact size that fits.
If you want an open clutch for ventilation, cool spinny look, and better sound, I recommend getting the ProCutting clutch, since it is MUCH quieter, but IMO, just as cool. A stock clutch with an open cover IS, in fact, too loud for the average blonde.

IZ don't feel bad. I've got a carb'd 400. If it makes you feel like more of a man, you can say you don't have the smallest monster on the DMF.
the dry clutch was one of the things that sold me on the s2r 1000 over the s2r... and of course, there's the adjustable suspension, the extra cc's, etc., etc. :D
Not really a threadjack, but more of a thread-detour: what are the pros and cons of dry vs. wet clutches?
One pro of having a wet clutch is slightly faster oil contamination. This makes the oil a little bit darker when It comes oil change time and therefore gives the oil changer a greater sense of satisfaction about having used the old oil to it's full. ;)
