Hello all, Let me start by saying I'm 38 years old and until recently I never had long hair. I have always been a "high and tight" kind of guy and since I've got a widows peak that will sometime in the next 10 years or so reach a growing bald spot it's always worked for me. For about 10 years or so it's never been longer than 1/2 inch or so.
Fast forward to last summer and in the space of a few weeks my mother in law and my cousins wife both were diagnosed with cancer and soon after lost all their hair to chemotherapy. Being the funny guy I am I made my MIL's day when I told her I was going to grow my hair out for locks of love. Grow a 10 inch ponytail and you can donate it and it will be made into a wig for cancer patients. Specifically little kids. I started on my hair growing oddysey.
That was about 18 months ago. Both of my relatives are fully recovered and cancer free. They both endured multiple rounds of chemo and a few unplanned trips to the hospital. I am still growiing my hair. I have maybe an 8 inch pony tail and figure I will need to grow it for another 4 or 5 months. It is a pain to deal with and I have had to explain to my professional collegues why I look like a throwback from the 60's. I must admit that I kind if like it. Hardly any men have long hair these days so it's a little different. I wont say cool because luxurious long locks that are surrounding impending baldness will never look cool. It does look neat flying out of the back of my helmet though. Once I cut it I'll probably get it high and tight the first cut and then grow it out for the same reason. I've been saving money because I havent had a haircut in a year and a half !!
So how long is your hair ??
Mine comes past my shoulder blade ~
JM
I used to have hair long enough to reach past my waist. I rebelliously kept it all the way through the 90's until I went to get a corporate job and had it all chopped off. Now I can't let it get too long before it starts to annoy me and I have to cut it. Maybe when I retire I'll grow it all back and be one of those creepy old guys with the grey ponytails. [laugh]
Actually...
I am a dirty hippy....
but I cut my hair about 8 years ago...
and an 8" pony...
is nuttin'. ;)
Long hair just ages you, you really need to be in your 20s to pull it off (even then only a minority of people can really pull it off). I've had about every hairstyle known to man, but I keep it pretty short nowadays.
Almost waist length, but then I'm a chick. I usually let it grow a year or two, then cut it off short (donated to Locks of Love, of course) then let it grow again 'cause I'm too lazy to get it cut. Long hair on a man is sexy. [thumbsup]

I had long (long enough to sit on), beautiful white blond hair til I was 12. I'm tryin to find a pic of it thats digital. I cut it all off at 12 and donated it as well. Now its down just a smidge past my shoulders but I'm gonna cut it.

Every time I see a dude with long hair now, I think "what's up with that dude?!?", then I realize I have long hair too.
It's not that long though - 6" pony tail maybe now. Been long for ~18 years now. But the good part is that I only pay for a haircut like once a year, and then only if I can't get my wife to do it. That's a lot of money over 18 years.
I'm not a hippy though.
And my wife likes it long.

Ok Men, lets see some pics of your long hair. You got my attention so lets see what you look like. [popcorn] [bacon]
SAVE THE TREEEEEEEEEES :'(
Mine is about 12" long all around. A couple of years I donated my hair to locks of love. First time I had a "real" hair cut since 1989. I'm planning on doing it again, but my hair grows really slow.
Gosh I feel right at home on this thread typing from my computer in Boulder, CO.
;D
Locks of Love: [thumbsup] (There are way too many people here – Boulder, not the DMF – who need to step it up and donate!)
Nah, I've got very wavy/curly hair, so have given up on trying to grow it long after several embarrassing attempts over a number of years -- after about six or seven months, I enter into an extended Bozo the Clown phase that I've never had the guts to push on through.
I grew my hair out for almost a year in my mid 20's. My hair's really curly if I don't keep it really short, so I initially had a big Weird Al fro, then I braided it into Coolio dreads. Took them out after about 6 months. After that I rocked one of the Steven Segal guido ponytails till I couldn't take it any more. It was about chin length when I finally hacked it off. Never again.
I usually rock out the shoulder length, But I lost my hair on a bet a couple of months ago [bang] [bang] [bang] [bang]

Back when I used to grow mine out every couple of years, I'd just wear a hat through that stage.
The girls always dug the long curly hair.
Scooter, who is that in your avatar. She looks.....delicious.

That be me ;D 12"
Navy says no more than 4" in length and 2" in bulk on top. My sweet pompa-fro is pretty close ;D
Beginning of last year I kept getting mistaken for a co worker. Someone with whom I did not like. We both had our hair cut short and worked in the same department. So I had enough and started growing it out. I am at 9 months now, but it is starting to bug me. So far response has been good from girls so I might just keep going. I know I will like it this winter when it's cold outside.
The thing that bugs me the most right now is the hair right above my ears is curly, everything else is straight. tips anyone?

looks like Betty Page.
How are you measuring your hair? Mine is pretty long and i have no intention of cutting it. I am probably the farthest thing from hippy too.
ahhh .... I love long hair. on a man... a woman... oh how I love to run my fingers thru the delicate softness that grows but thru the will of the greater good . Not everybody does it but , damana <inhale> fluffy softness that posesses such a person. If you can do it.. do it please. pretty please. beauty is lacking in the world for crystsake
Does kind of look like Betty Page...I'm a sucker for that vampy 50's pin up look.
I measure my hair from te tie that holds my pony tail. It has to be a 10 inch pony tail for locks of love (that's at last check anyways). Mine is about 8 or so but is kind of curly. I've actually grown to like the way it looks and I'm pretty far from a hippie.

No more than 2 inches for me..............
.......................... That came out weird ;D
Am I the only chick on here who thinks long hair on a guy is absolutely disgusting?!? Sorry guys but I'm definitely not a fan....I think it's admirable to do it for a good cause and if my fiance wanted to grow his hair out to donate it I could tolerate it, but I like my men neat and trim from head to toe... :)

JM: Ow! Shit! I'm going, I'm going!!
my hair when long just grows straight out of my head, makes me look a bit like a q-tip so i gave up on growing it long in highschool
today it's a 1 1/2 on the sides and 2 on top. i like the feeling of air across my scalp.
i grew my hair out once. it got annoying mainly due to the fact that the front part grows slower than the rest. like half as fast. i had bangs. [puke]
my g/f would love for me to grow it out, but i'm past that stage of my life. i'll keep the beard long, but the hair can't grow past my eyebrows in front, and has to stay off my ears.
I think I've got about 4-5" worth of pony tail at this point, though I never put it in a pony tail. This about matches the longest I've let it get.
I had short hair 'till I was 23, let it grow out for about 18 months and now get it cut maybe twice a year. Never thought I would have long hair. Kinda grows slow these days, though.
I'm too lazy to care-I have engineers hair. It sticks out in every direction no matter what I do with it. I make Dagwood Bumstead look normal. Basically if it gets in my eyes, I get it all lopped off, and then ignore it until I can't see it again. Stylish, I am not.
Ive had long hair a couple of times. It's better to just have it short. If you ever do any work on cars it just gets grease & oil in it and then a bunch of dirt & redwood needles. Then there are the split ends. specially if you ride bikes and the hair is out in the wind. Not worth the hassle & you get more respect with short hair anyway. But whatever you want to do...
I would say it's definitely possible to have long hair without being a dirty hippie.
Here's a song called "Long Hair" by our generation's poet laureate, The Last Mr. Bigg.
Lyrics NSFW.
And yes, that one picture does in fact show his fake eye with a diamond for the pupil.

pony tail with a clean shaven face is a huge turn on!!
For those with curly hair, there's pomade and other hair care products to help keep those tresses in line. Go to the hair care aisle, look over the products, and ask a pretty girl what she recommends!!

The pretty girl would have to lead me by the hand to the hair care aisle, show me what to use and then offer to put it on. I wouldn't hear a word she said!!!
ive had longish hair all my life, but could never stand to let it grow it too long until this past year. i had a hair cut in july 07 and havent looked back since. as of now its about 5-6 in from the ponytail tie. i usually get pissed off with it when its in the awkward stage where it flips out of my hat like wings and cut it off.
i love long hair on chicks and my woman told me that if i dont cut mine shes gonna cut hers. she showed up at the house with shorter hair than me and i couldnt help myself "now that you cut yours, i dont have to cut mine!" and its still long.
Corp buzz cut is just fine for me now.
I´ve always had short, neat hair until sometime around march this year.. i am losing my hair, thanks to genetics, stress and make the beast with two backs knows everthing else that can cause this so I decided to not cut my hair.
The folks who I met at Indy saw my mini afro in action, the IN humidity caused that.. I swear! In Florida it was worse!
I´m gonna have to cut it short now, can´t stand having untidy helmet hair all day.
One half inch of hair on the ol' gourd, all around. The Buzz rules, baby. [thumbsup]

So how long is your hair ??
My best friend has his hair long for about 12 years and finally cut it all off and gave it to Locks of Love. Many people I know have done this, and I've often thought about doing this also. I haven't looked into it too seriously, as I'm not willing to cut my hair, just yet, and since the hairline keeps getting further and further rearward, I don't think they will only accept ponytails (yeah, my hair is more like a mullet, these days, but it is probably in a ponytail about 90% of the time).
BTW, my ponytail is somewhere between 14" and 16". I haven't measured it in a while.

That's funny, back in high school a couple of my friends used to call me Bob... as in Sideshow Bob.
Haven't been to a barber since 1967. My dad had called ahead and told them what to do. Stupid me went in, sat down and suddenly had a reverse Mohawk. So I left with a crewcut. Has been cut to my collar a couple of times since, but mostly long. My 20 something year olds have never seen me with short hair. Got kicked off the track team in 1970 for refusing to get a haircut, government school no less. Right now reaches my elbows. Still blond at 55. I have no use whatsoever for hippies.
Oh yeah, just last week a young lady at least 25 years younger that me asked if she could trim it for me. Haven't a clue if she wanted to touch or just found it disgusting and wanted to chop it off.
