Title: USC and Ohio State
Post by: metallimonster on September 26, 2008, 07:48:13 AM
Okay so here is what I don't get.

Since the beginning of 2005 -

Ohio State has lost to Texas, Penn State, Florida, Illinois, LSU and USC, all teams that went to BCS bowls and 3 of which won the title.

USC has lost to Texas, Oregon State, UCLA, Stanford, Oregon, and Oregon State again.  Texas won the title obviously and the rest of the teams stink.

I don't get why everyone hates us and thinks that we are some overhyped team.  At least we lose to teams that are either supposed to beat us or are close in strength.  I'm sure USC will only drop a few spots after losing to a unranked team with a losing record and Ohio State dropped 9 spots after getting beat by the #1 team in the nation, away.  I just don't think that the public perception of Ohio State is very fair.  I know we lost pretty badly to USC but at Least we were supposed to lose to USC.  We don't lose to teams like Northwestern compared to USC losing to Oregon State.  If your only 6 losses have come by Top 10 and 3 number eventual National Champions I think the program should be considered a success.  If you want to talk about overhyped it is USC not Ohio State. Lately it seems like they are ranked number 1 or close going into the season and end up getting upset by a way lower team.

Don't go saying the Pac-10 is a better conference than the Big Ten either.  We have 4 teams in the top 25 and the Pac-10 has just USC.  Also the Pac-10 is 0-4 against Mountain West teams this year.  So don't be surprised to see a USC/Ohio State rematch in the Rosebowl.  Things might be different with a healthy Beanie Wells and a different starting Quarterback.

I don't think there's a debate that Ohio State isn't successful.  OSU has a great history of National Championships, Heisman Trophy's, and winning/bowl seasons.

USC gets a lot of cred for their success too.  As does scores of big time programs.

"Everybody" that hates OSU is probably a rabid fan of their Alma Mater or whatever.

It's nothing personal, but come on its college football... where rivalries mean something  [thumbsup]

Oh yeah Hook 'em Horns  [evil]

One more thing Big12 = 4 teams in the top 10

The Hype is the fun part of college football   [thumbsup]

As far as the hype/ranking, it's all about the media voters and their location.

I agree with you 100% fans should be rabid and the hype is a part of the fun.  However, it seems like the media holds Ohio State to different standards than programs like USC.

Not a big deal I just wanted to get the info out there.  All I can do is hope OSU wins out and see what happens.  By the way Oklahoma is the best team in the country and has been since before the season started.

USC has no other major football program to contend with for media attention.  USC has a lot going for it, the California sun, history, the best cheerleader outfits  :o , it's tough for the media not to love USC

Whereas OSU has to compete w/ Michigan, Tennessee, PSU to name a few.

OU does look really good, it's gonna be a great game in Dallas for TX/OU

I think the main problem people have with Ohio is their bad performance two straight years in the championship game.  You're right that it's a pretty cruel way to judge a team but you have to understand that in the big game, people want to see competition and if they don't they'll second guess who should have been there.  Now with this years loss to USC there's the impression, whether valid or not, that Ohio can't run with the big dogs.  Might not be fair, but that's what happens when rankings are based on opinions.

Ohio State has a tendency to choke in the big games.

USC has a tendency to get complacent in the supposedly easy games, which is more forgiveable.

Maybe that's the difference?

Ohio State can't play the big games.

They can't compete against PAC 10 or SEC Teams.

I think the last 2 BCS Championships have shown that the SEC is a superior conference.

And please, no excuses about Ginn being hur, etc etc.

I understand about the uncompetitive losses and that is the reason why we are judged like that.  You'll hear no excuses from me.  Obviously this last loss to USC had a lot to do with coaching if Oregon State can come out and beat them like that.

By the way we just can't beat USC the rest of the Pac-10 is no better than the Big Ten except maybe CAL.

Oregon State out coached USC... I swear they new the plays before the USC offense new what play was happening...

As to the debate... I think it is match ups... really... Pac-10 sees USC every season... they study them all summer... so you better be prepared more for a conference team than for a non conference team... cause you will see one a lot more than the other... that being said... USC looked like a different team against OrSU than against OhSU.... or maybe USC's true weakness is a healthy running back hammering away at the center... if Beanie was there... he would have hammered down the center.... but Ohio never gave Sanchez the pressure that Oregon did... it will be interesting to see who survives the pac-10.... season is still young...

Maybe my Oregon Ducks can make up for the 12 QBs the keep losing and beat Oregon State and USC  ;D

But now you are comparing individual game performance to conference strength.

Michigan (though they lost to Appy State last season) also beat Florida in Florida.
Penn State crushed the Oregon State team that USC just gave their cherry to.
Purdue played Oregon to the wire.

Take it as you will:
