Title: The Wisconsin Hunting Thread
Post by: Ducatiloo on October 02, 2008, 02:58:28 PM
All most time for Deer Season [thumbsup]  Any other hunters?

FYI check the new zones this year.  The DNR went rifle friendly this year, from what I hear it was in order to get more deer in some zones.

Yes sir I will be hunting Rifle season.     I think Im zone 13 ( lucky 13 ) .
Lots of deer to be shot.
Im not a big trophy hunter, so I just hunt behind the compound here and fill the freezer.

Some day I should scan some photos of some of the bigger deer Ive shot.
But with dileup internet connection its a total       to do any type of photo share.

Had first frost this morning

Only if you're in the lead ;D  I need to find the county line so I know how far North I can hunt on the 18th.

The one thing I don't understand is the DNR's CWD plan.  It's been proven that the Bucks will travel great distances to breed, but the doe's tend to stick in the same area.  Why is the DNR pushing to clear out the doe's?  If the bucks are the ones that do the traveling, woudn't they be the ones spreading CWD?  By that theory wouldn't it be logical to clear out more bucks?  We would then have less deer crossing over into other herds, and spreading CWD.

Is that your deer hauler in the pic?  Wow 13 your way up there.  I hunting in the between Zones 68b, and 76A.   76A is a CWD but I am sure the Deer will not cross the HWY to 68b :-\

I don't think tomorrow is gonna work out.  Look on the bright side,  There are three more hunts yet to do this year, and I will be fully ready for them!  Is there anyone who was able to harvest some tasty venison during the early antlerless hunt?

My best guess would be the DNR website.  If they don't have the info, I am sure there will be a link.  Look under chronic wasting.

It was slim pickings this year, I came up empty handed.  The DNR says Dodge CTY had a higher harvest rate than usual....BS

Dodge CTY ? Like down by Mineral Point?

Lots a gies here dident shoot a thing. Im out (was out), for the season due to a torn rotator cuff.  Should heal up by spring, little at a time.

Till then I have some fire wood and a neibhor who can help me keep some fishing holes open.

Dodge county as in to the east of Dane and above Jefferson County.  I hear down my Minderal Point is the place to go now for dear.   But that's just the DNR  talking  :P

The DNR doesn't have a clue about what is going on with the dear heard.  Their harvest schedules and limits are way off the mark!

Haven't posted here in a while with school keeping me so busy, and being from the west side of the state but figured I would share my hunting stories a bit too.

The numbers on the west side of the state are down too, but still plenty to see.  I managed to shoot three does during bow season, and one doe during gun.  Passed up on a nice 9 point with my bow at 20 yards, hoping for a bigger one...but no avail.  Passed on a wide, but young 8 point the friday of gun season.  Total for both gun and bow season, we shot 8 antlerless deer.

I will be back out with my bow next week though.   [thumbsup]

Here is one of my bow kills from late October.

And the buck I have been holding out for all season.   [bow_down]  I hope he makes it through to next year (if I don't get him yet)

Its a Mathews FX.  I have been shooting it for probably 7 years now and haven't had a problem.  The Marquis is a good bow, but at that price range I would also take a hard look at the Mathews or Mission line-ups.  They are a Wisconsin based company with the best bows in the business, and top notch customer service.  I will be purchasing two new bows this spring.  One Mission Eliminator, and one Mathews DXT or Reezen 6.5 (havent decided).

The most important thing when buying a new bow is to shoot as many different brands and models as you can, and make your decision from there. [thumbsup]

Thanks for the info.  Besides comfort what am I looking at when trying out the bow?  Do you use fixed broad heads or something with movable parts such as the Rage?

Title: Re: The Wisconsin Hunting Thread
Post by: oldschool55 on January 02, 2009, 02:30:44 PM
Its kinda like test driving cars.  They all get the job done, but some just stick out more than others.  Find one that just feels good, or hits the sweet spot.  When trying out bows, make sure each one is set up similarly so that they are each comparable.  I have used all types of heads, and have had success with every one of them.  The doe pictured was shot with a Rage 2-Blade.

Let me know if you have any other questions.  Archery and bow hunting is more of a passion for me than motorcycles!    [drink]

well up in bayfield county where i hunted rifle season this year the deer kill was down 50+% the way we have it figured is that the deer got a hold of a set of regulations and just dissapeared or the stupider ones just came out only at night [bang]

That's why I'm looking into bow hunting.  The deer are less freaked out in September.

IMO when getting into any kind of hunting, you have to pay a good size sum the first year, but after that you can add "value ad ins" as your budget allows each year after.

I might slip out with my .36 cal flintlock and see if I can bark a squirrel or two.  I have a good recipe for them in the Dutch Oven.  I usually like to wait until after a frost or two to start hunting though.

I have a 43 acre farm that butts up to about 10 square miles of marsh and woods.  The deer population has been knocked back so hard here I don't think I am even going to hunt deer this year.  (first time since 1974)  I could usually look out the back window with the spotting scope and see anywhere from 2 to a dozen deer in the marsh.  I've seen 3 in the past 6 months.  If I had lots of money, I'd start a class action lawsuit against the DNR for mismanagement of the herd.
