getting geared up for the new bike?
Thinking about it.
Ive worn $85 HJC's for my entire riding career and while they're a fine helmet (and kept my IQ as is during a REALLY hard hit to the side of my head on the track) Im wanting something more comfortable.
Since the dealer with my KTM is taking forever to get the title in and sell it to me (I know it isn't their fault, but they're getting blamed anyway ;) ) I think I may lean on them to give me one of these helmets at their cost and drop the price on the bike.

Arai makes pregnant dogin DS/SM helmet that I absolutely love.

Just an alternative if you don't have a shoei-shaped head.
Ive seen that too. I like the looks of the Shoei better, and I've read they're a better DS helmet over the Arai.
What I wonder most about though, is how to make sure I get a lid that fits right, because nobody around here has these helmets in stock.
My friend here has one he uses with his dr400sm. He also has a M800, but doesn't come around the DMF board much anymore >:(
mitt
last time i checked (a couple years ago) that helmet wasnt' sold in the USA.
if it is then i might buy a new helmet sooner than i thought.
Better get out the VISA card, Knight.

I tried one on at MotoGp in indy. The lining isn't quite as nice as the Arai, but it looks to be well made. From what I've heard, it's made so you can remove the visor, the shield, or both and ride depending on the situation. And for what it's worth, the size that fit best was one size smaller than my Arai.
If my Arai was at the end of it's life, I'd have bought one (they were doing about $50 off the online prices).

I'm about a click away from buying the newer model (XD 3). More features then the Shoei and I have an Arai head.

I also have an Arai head and I've tried one of these on. They are AWESOME!
Not that you need any help spending your money, but DO IT! ;)
I tried the XD on last year at the big MC show. The Arai rep was there and he helped with the fitting and write down the changes necessary to get perfect fit for me.
For Christmas I am getting gift cards to DucSea. They will go towards a new lid. I have a small head and the Arai fits.
Best helmet prices I've come across are at motodepot.com where I recently bought my RF-1000.
use the discount code 'motodepot' for the outstanding price. I see the Hornet DS for $369.95 + S&H [thumbsup]

I can get the XD 3 from ebay for about $60 less.
How do you know if you have a Shoei head, or an Arai head?
I mean, since I can't try these on without ordering them both. . .

You just have to try them on. Got a dealer close by (althogh i prefer to buy local, not just use them for fit)?
I'm not sure anyone has an "Arai head". Their helmet shapes differ within the lines. Arai Vectors (used to be Astral-X) fit my head perfectly, but the Arai Quantum (I think) is horrible. Only 2 of the Arai models work for me...the rest fit so bad I can hardly stand them.

My suggestion is to go to a shop that you don't particularly like but one that happens to have a selection of helmets available & try a bunch on. This is not cool to do with a shop that you actually appreciate & frequent, and I may get poo-pooed upon for even suggesting... A better opportunity would be if a motorcycle show comes to your area. That's a great place to try a bunch of stuff on without feeling too weird about it.
Luckily we have a couple of shops in my area that are ripe for this type of abuse. I do support local businesses that are actually making an effort to support local riders, but I'm sure many of us have encountered less 'interested' retailers from time to time.
After trying on a bunch of Arais and Shoeis over the years I know that I have one of them Shoei RF-1000 size L shaped heads & definitely not an X-11 or Arai (those that I tried) head. Made the online shopping experience much more predictable.
Good idea :D
Huh?
Why is the big ass duck bill desirable? Are you getting a dirtbike?

Because it tells everyone at the Starbucks that if Ewan were to call and want to go ride to Mongolia or something, you'd be right there with him.
Just Kidding ;D
I guess it's just a styling thing like cool boy racer graphics and naked ladies adorning your lid.
Not quite a dirt bike.
