Title: New toy - just in time for hunting!
Post by: vwboomer on October 12, 2008, 05:05:58 PM
I had the opportunity to buy a pistol at dealer cost +10. I was looking at the S&W Glock knockoff for $275 +shipping, but decided with my pending closure on a house at the end of the month it wasn't a good idea.
Sitting at the bar last night my friend tells me another member has a pistol he's trying to dump so he can get a rifle for deer season.

Its a Ruger P94DC with 2 mags. Very good condition. Gander Mountain offered him $125 for it (!). He told me 300, I said 250 cash tomorrow.
So now I got a new toy!

Yeah Rugers aren't top of the line but my life doesn't depend on it. and 40cal isn't much more than 9mm for plinking so I'm happy.
Just in time for squirrel season  ;)

Nice!
You lookin' to become the new deal king?
You'll like that .40 cal, and Ruger may not be tops, but they're far from the bottom.

I'd love to be the Deal King but I just don't have the connections. Tho a month ago I did get a case of Skyy vodka for $8/bottle cuz the distributor wasn't going to carry it anymore. Only 1L bottles, but hey, that's still half price ;)

I shot a P89(?) 9MM a few years back and it shot well, was pretty accurate and never misfired through 200 rounds.

The guy I bought it from told me he paid almost 500 for it from a friend used. If he was telling the truth, he got hosed.
Now to find cheap ammo.

Yeah, maybe not tops, but Ruger makes a nice gun, and .40 is a great all purpose round. Looks like a really great piece for a steal of a deal.

I had a P89 in 9mm. It was a real tank. You'll enjoy your Ruger.

What's the cheapest place to buy ammo? I'll probably pick up a couple boxes of UMC for this weekend, but wouldn't mind a more bulk purchase at some point. I know wolf is cheap, but don't want steel casings. They make aluminum as well I think but.....

I'm hoping to join a club so I can shoot whenever I want. The local middle school has open shooting in the basement some nights, but I'm 2nd shift so that's out.

Typically walmart - WWB (Winchester White Box) and Blazer Brass.

I would have snatched it up in a heartbeat.  [thumbsup] I own several Ruger firearms and have no complaints about any.

Picked up the  Blazer for 12.85 or something at walmart. I had to go to Gander for a carrying case and they had the Wolf for 15.50  [roll]

I'm sorry, but I think that's the funniest line I've read today. Not even a high school, a middle school. Bahahaa

I was thinking the same thing.
I think squirrel hunting was mentioned.
I hope the OP was just joking around about that.

I'll find out on Saturday!

My co-worker owns a tactical firearms training company. I think I'll get a decent price on it, probably +/- $800.

Expensive, yeah...

It has a big brother too

Wow.

I've read that one of the decisions to design the railed-revolver was for riot police (or other users) who had one hand occupied (such as with the shield) and would otherwise be unable to clear a jam in a semi-automatic, so a revolver was desired. Don't know if that's the actual reason, or somebody just said "I just want one". Interesting notion either way.

I agree! Totally a shield gun. 110% awesome and unnecessary. It will be my first revolver. I want 8 shots at a minimum.

Down the road, I think I'll put CT grips on the 2" and see if I can extend the effective range with it.

lol yeah the hunting part was kind of a joke, except as a mild deterrent for all the bear in the area while grouse/squirrel hunting.

I noticed the walmart pistol ammo shelf was pretty bare so they may have been out of the WWB

One of the middle schools in town (out of 2) used to be the high school. It was built with a shooting range in the basement. You know, back before the liberals decided any sort of firearm is dangerous and no training is better than proper trainin ;)
(FWIW I'm a political moderate so don't hate on that statement!)
Anyway, the police used to use it for indoor practice during the winter (their new station being built houses an indoor range) but the middle school still has open shooting. Last I heard it was any handgun, and .22 rifle but had to be all lead.
As far as I'm concerned, firearms training should be at least optional in schools.
