Title: My latest scale model: Panzer I Post by: NeufUnSix on October 13, 2008, 01:31:08 PM A teeny tank, with a full interior! It's 1/35 scale, about 5 inches long and 2.5 inches wide. That's small, it's about 1/4 - 1/3rd the size of a typical heavy tank model. Pardon the swastika flag (which was painted freehand, never so much trouble for such an evil symbol), it was an aircraft identification item during the first years of the war. This one is from the Polish campaign of '39.

Title: Re: My latest scale model: Panzer I Post by: factorPlayer on October 13, 2008, 01:48:11 PM Nice job (but not as cool as the Tiger ;D)
Love the detail, and dare I say the swastika is a nice touch - strictly for authenticity's sake of course. The technological supremacy of the german tanks of that era serve to remind us the Nazis were a real threat. Title: Re: My latest scale model: Panzer I Post by: NeufUnSix on October 13, 2008, 02:00:40 PM Actually the Pz 1 was far from a superior machine. It was a training tank pressed into service due to a shortage of heavier tanks. The armour was so thin it couldn't withstand anything bigger than a machine gun. The Germans won the battles due to superior tactics, communication, and the dominance of the Luftwaffe in the skies. Any time a Panzer I or II encountered a Polish 40mm gun or one of their light tanks, they got their asses handed to them.

I think I need to dig out some of the unopened model kits in the closet..... Title: Re: My latest scale model: Panzer I Post by: Magnus on October 13, 2008, 02:49:42 PM amazing! how did you get the paint to look weathered like that, for example the #22?
Title: Re: My latest scale model: Panzer I Post by: factorPlayer on October 13, 2008, 03:09:53 PM yeah this particular model was not necessarily one of the finest, I was thinking more along the lines of the Panther and Tiger
Title: Re: My latest scale model: Panzer I Post by: NeufUnSix on October 13, 2008, 03:49:00 PM Panther and Tiger were certainly good tanks - when they worked. Both had seriously weak transmissions. Both needed engine rebuilds every 1000 kms. More tanks were lost due to mechanical failure and the crew blowing up the tank to avoid capture than due to combat losses.
On the model, the markings are decals applied with a special solvent that melts them onto the surface. After they had set, I used a piece of scotchbrite pad with the base colour dabbed on and made the "chipping" (same technique for all the paint chips on the tank). The streaking is oil paint applied in a tiny dot at the top, then dragged down with a soft, dry brush. There is also a very thin film of chalk dust on the entire tank to fade the paint slightly. Title: Re: My latest scale model: Panzer I Post by: NeufUnSix on October 13, 2008, 06:24:30 PM I'm actually unemployed right now - that's where the time comes from :P
This one took me about two weeks, which is a pretty moderate pace (a few hours every other night). Do you have a job? When the hell do you find time for these models? Beautifully done! [beer] Title: Re: My latest scale model: Panzer I Post by: Super T.I.B on October 13, 2008, 06:54:26 PM That's INSANE!
I was actually at a model/hobby shop the other day & looking at the Ducati 916 which you had done previously. I was so close to buying it and then I thought to myself, nah, there is no way it would look as good as yours. I'd have glue everywhere, parts wouldn't fit properly and I'd use a hammer to make them fit. >:( Title: Re: My latest scale model: Panzer I Post by: kopfjÀger on October 13, 2008, 07:20:36 PM Awesome photography as well.
