Title: I am 1/2 as wise as I was yesterday.
Post by: Drunken Monkey on October 13, 2008, 10:43:22 PM
At age 44 they finally got 2 of my wisdom teeth.

My dentist, a Frenchman chosen for his sense of humor* and great views from his office, yanked out a pair of my wisdom teeth today.

Oddly, the procedure was painless.

Then again, I think he bypassed Novocain in the cheeks in favor of just injecting it into my left frontal lobe ("Doctor? I taste burning and smell purple. Is that okay?")

Only unpleasant part was the special crunching noises being transmitted  directly to my ear via the jaw bone. Also, answering questions once I was
back at work.

So, any tips on dealing with extracted teeth? I think I was still suffering from the Novocain equivalent of a stroke when they told me what I should and shouldn't do.

*(During my first visit I made a Marathon Man reference and he got it. Seems as good a criteria as any.)

Stick a wad of gauss in the holes in your mouth and try not to choke on your own spit. Rinse and repeat once the gauss is fully saturated in your blood. You shouldn't have to do this more than a couple days. Careful about getting stuff stuck in your holes for the next week. Maybe swish with warm salt water every few hours for the next couple days too. 'Course this is probably all on that link DP posted but I didn't wanna look at the link.

Maybe if you're less wise you might believe in the tooth fairy now if you didn't before.  ;D You should tell your wife you're sticking your teeth under your pillow for the tooth fairy and see if you get anything. You're older now so the teeth should be worth more, right?  [cheeky]

----------snip----------------

Be careful, that may change the signal/noise ratio of your tinfoil hat.

I had mine pulled in the middle of the high school year.  [bang]

Not the most pleasant social experience I tells ya.

Having pictures of chipmunks attached to the outside of my locker anyone? Endlessly overhearing "Did you catch the nature show about chipmunks?"

Lotsa fun with that daily dose of the curved syringy thingy too. Nothing like a taste of your food a 2nd time.  [puke]

Oh wait, we're all supportive individuals here ...  ;D

I had all 4 pulled last year at age 37. They had to knock me out before they pulled them out. I lived on pudding and ice cream for awhile. Guess that means I totally stupid now.

Don't drink anything carbonated, especially soda. Don't drink from a straw, don't smoke, alcohol will dissolve the clot and delay healing. Smoking will result in a dry socket, which is painful...

Good luck healing up.

I had all of mine pulled when I was in college.  Only had a local anesthetic on my mom's advice - bad mistake.  It ran out partway through the procedure, they tried to give me more and it had no effect (even the needle hurt).  They still had to drill out 2 at that point, so they just did it as fast as they could. :-X

I had mime pulled when I was a teenager.  They put me out, and I always wake up in battle mode from that stuff.  I spit out the gauze, so the nurse attempted to pack more gauze.  Bad mistake on her part.

I ignored the alcohol part in favor of a red-wine and painkiller cocktail   [wine]

Doing a periodic saline rinse, not eating anything that could get stuck in there seems to be doing the trick.

Although it's still bleeding just a little bit. Creepy. [puke]

I had mime pulled when I was a teenager.

You had a mime stuck in your teeth? Man, I could see that being painful to extract  [laugh]

And BP's photo seems like a good advert for dental care: "Visit your dentist frequently. Or else you'll end up like this man..."  ;D

I've avoided it, without any issues yet. I had four impacted at 45 degrees - in the last xray, they had actually pushed themselves straight and are now coming in like an extra set of molars. Kind of gross, they are slowly poking through my gums and I have to take care not to let any infections build up under the flesh. I'm happy to take that over the operation.... When I had the 4 impacted on my xray, the dentist said with a completely straight face "we'll have to break your jaw to extract those". Wonder why I opted to leave them?

Mine are similar but I didn't do such a good job of keeping the gaping holes in my gums clean and one of them got a cavity and had to be pulled. The other 3 are coming out fine now although they are adding extra pressure on my teeth which hurts sometimes. I still kinda have gaping holes but now that the teeth have pushed out more they're more dents than caves and it's much easier to keep them clean/ pick out food that gets stuck.

But if he comes at you with a Black & Decker in his hand instead of a dental drill, bet you'll be having second thoughts...

Ive had this reoccurring nightmare of waking up while under general anesthetic just as the surgeoun is putting the bottom of his shoe against my forehead for leverage right before he sets the vice grips on my first wisdom tooth.........eesh!

Avoid tortilla chips for a while.

Trust me on that one . . .   ;D

(unfortunately, I speak from experience).

Yeah all 4. I wasn't to bad after the third day. Life gets better once you take the guaze out. Just because what you eat and take the meds. I was all healed in about a 3weeks to a month.

You had them pulled under locals anesthetics?  You're a crazy person.  I don't like IVs much either, but it was a welcome alternative to

A:  A giant needle going anywhere near my face (while I'm awake anyway) and..
B:  Knowing/Feeling what the doc is doing in there

Ok, so maybe I'm a baby when it comes to this stuff  ;D.  All good advice though.  Salt water, keep your gauze in, take your meds (even if you don't think you need them.  Chances are they're helping), take your other meds (cough, wine, cough), and mildly injure anyone who makes chipmonk jokes (it's just like in prison, beat some ass or become someones pregnant dog).  Hope you have a good recovery.  I had all four of mine done in high school but it's been about 10 years and I have no infection problems whatsoever.  Good luck.

1.  Get all four out at once.  If you only do two, you'll never go back for the other two.

2.  Percocets are our friends.  Nice percocets.

3.  No matter how good it looks and how healed you think you are, do not eat that Snickers bar (even if you cut it up in small pieces).  Anything gooey like that will hurt.

went to an oral surgeon.  local doctor didn't do them, and the surgeon was prepared in case of complications (none).  up your vitamin C intake BEFORE surgery.  It speeds up the healing.  Kudos to the above adviece.  salt water, avoid solid food, keep the holes clean.

Happy healing!
