Title: show me your monster without side panels please. Post by: tristantumble on October 14, 2008, 07:19:07 AM hey guys,
i cracked my left side- side panel on my bike, so i think i might just take both off. Could you please post some pics of what your bike looks like without them, and how to go about removing and hiding the wiring underneath. Also, they don't serve any practical purpose do they? thanks! TT Title: Re: show me your monster without side panels please. Post by: ProTeal55 on October 14, 2008, 07:32:27 AM I am also on the fence about taking off my side covers.
The one has some kinda discoloration thing going on, so instead of spending some HUGE amout of cash to replace it I might just remove them all together. Title: Re: show me your monster without side panels please. Post by: Ranger06 on October 14, 2008, 11:42:17 AM I pulled my covers off and am so happy with how it looks, I am going to cut off all the little odd mounting bits that held them on. May even cut the seat lock off too. Might pay someone to do it though, I am pretty handy with a wrench, but not sure I could blend out the welds, then prime, and paint to match perfectly with the rest of the frame.

thanks again. TT Title: Re: show me your monster without side panels please. Post by: Trenchdigger on October 14, 2008, 02:11:23 PM You don't "need" frame plugs. IIRC, there are a couple places you could put them in, but I did not bother.
Wiring: It's fairly straight-forward, and you'll figure it out after looking at it.... I rerouted a couple wires, tucking them up under the seat, from the fuel tank to the tail light. There's enough slack to accommodate several route configurations. Title: Re: show me your monster without side panels please. I just pulled off the side covers and re-routed the wires. Looks great sans the passenger peg bracket. I'll need to find something to go there....or get serious and chop it off over the winter/mod the frame and re-powder :)
Title: Re: show me your monster without side panels please. Post by: tristantumble on October 16, 2008, 04:13:21 AM so what exactly is holding those panels in place? is it a snap on snap off type of deal? or are there screws?
Title: Re: show me your monster without side panels please. Post by: weemonster on October 16, 2008, 04:40:40 AM Bolts into rubber mounted nuts which can be a pita to get off i ended up breaking one of my side panels off. so i could get a decent grip on the nut with a wrench.
I took mine off but you could see too much cabling on one side . I fitted these instead. I wanted a set since the day i signed up for the DMl and saw industrial girls monster. (http://images38.fotki.com/v1277/photos/8/890293/3446862/P1010035-vi.jpg) she has silver DP side panels. i think black go better wi ma yella bike tho. Title: Re: show me your monster without side panels please. Post by: Jarvicious on October 20, 2008, 07:29:21 AM To anyone who's been waiting for winter to do this mod, I say pick a bright and sunny Saturday and get it over with. I'll have the pics up soon, but there's really now "how too" necessary. It was rediculously easy, not to mention you can always put your bike back together in a jiffy if you run out of mod time. There are two allen-head bolts per plastic cover, then a couple of wires on the right and three on the left for you to relocate. The biggest issue I found was relocating (I have no idea what this part does, but the cable runs from the little box behind the cover to the spark plug) the little box up underneath the tank but it takes little more than about 2 spare hours and at least part of a six pack. Zip ties are a dime a dozen. Sit next to your bike, start cutting the stock ties and removing cable mounts, and get to work. It doesn't look right?? Cut it and try again.
I love how it opens up the right side so you can see the shock, the only thing I have left to do is get rid of that massive airbox/heatsink assembly right underneath the seat. Does anyone know what exactly is that venting? Could you run the heatsink somewhere else other than under the seat? It seems intimidating at first, but it's all a bunch of baby steps. P.S. - Make sure you reconnect all your wiring harnesses, unless of course you don't think need your speedo or your odometer ;D ;D Title: Re: show me your monster without side panels please. Post by: NAKID on October 20, 2008, 07:16:12 PM The box on the left side under the side panel is the coil for the vertical cyl. The "heatsink" is your rectifier, (kinda changes the voltage from the stator to the electronics on the bike). The vent box is coming off of the crankcase behind the vertical cyl. and redirects the vented oil and air back into the airbox. The box is designed to trap as much of the oil as possible, only allowing the air back into the intake...

Took mine off with the rear hugger a couple of years ago and never looked back. Without the side panels the frame just opens up so nicely above the rear wheel. And I figured that if the S2/4R's didn't come with a rear hugger stock, what the hell do I need one for?? Naked is as naked does!
