Title: Son, we need to talk
Post by: DCXCV on October 17, 2008, 04:24:17 PM
...it's about the car surfing.

http://health.msn.com/kids-health/articlepage.aspx?cp-documentid=100218321&GT1=31036 (http://health.msn.com/kids-health/articlepage.aspx?cp-documentid=100218321&GT1=31036)

Best quote of the article:
Quoteghost riding, in which a driver exits and dances next to a moving vehicle.

wtf? dancing?

although this was a close second:
Quotethis week's issue of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, a CDC publication.

Where do i get my subcription?

"Ghost riding the whip" is apparently a rap culture thing to do. I suppose it is like the old Chinese fire drill but with the car in motion. I think they car surfed in the Michael J. Fox movie Teen Wolf. I believe that automatically qualifies it as a lame practice.

I probably shouldn't admit this, but in my youth I have participated in this, and other very similar activities involving motor vehicles. Strangely enough, I grew up in the midwest. Kids do some pretty stupid things when they're really bored.

The CDC researchers also found:

Most car surfing injuries and deaths occurred in August, and 74 percent of the incidents occurred in the Midwest and the South.
In 75 percent of cases, death was caused by a bump or blow to the head.
In 29 percent of the articles, there was mention of a sudden vehicle movement or maneuver, such as an abrupt turn or sudden braking, which caused the person car surfing to fall off the vehicle. Even at slow speeds, these types of falls can cause serious injuries or death.

------

i think we need to see wht the real issue is here.. these kids are STUPID!!!!!

WHY AREN'T THEY WEARING HELMETS? That right there would have prevented 75% of possible deaths.

So talk to your kid now and tell them "you know i know you are going to car surf, that's OK, but make sure you wear protection, here is my ARAI helmet, have fun"

Geez, kids these days, at least if you are going to do something really stupid take minimal precautions at the least.

hooray for physics in action!!!

if they had paid attn in physics class they would have thought ahead and devised some form of saftey strap or roped themselves off at least. then they wouldn't be so dumb.

i paid attn, and had been doing stupid shit long enough that i knew how to minimize the risk, plus i knew how to fall. i only have scars to speak for what i did now [thumbsup]

Why do I picture Red Foreman telling Eric " Sure riding on the Vista Cruiser may seem like a good idea at the time, but I don't do this! I don't want to have to tell the guys at down at the plant your dead because my son was just being a dumbass."

"Injuries and deaths occurred at a wide range of vehicle speeds, ranging from 5 mph to 80 mph"

80mph?!?!?

I wouldn't even do that with leathers and my helmet on!

At least on a bike at that speed I can use the brake. .

or steer
