Title: O/T: Duckwrench races again! Race #5, Sunday Dec. 7th. Season Finale!!
Post by: duckwrench13 on October 18, 2008, 09:00:00 PM
For those of you interested, tomorrow is race #1 of the Bay Area Super Prestige Cyclocross Series.

http://www.pilarcitos.com/2008CrossLaunch.htm (http://www.pilarcitos.com/2008CrossLaunch.htm)

Race#1 @ McLaren Park, SF. The first race of the day starts at 8:30am. Depending on where they place me... I still have my Sr. Expert license, so I'm not sure how that will stack me in their ranking system... I'll be racing at 8:30 with the Men's Category C, or with the Masters 35+ Cat-B at 10.

Either way, it's a blast to watch! If you've never seen a 'cross race, this is a great way to get a first hand experience. Guaranteed to be a hoot no matter how you slice it!! [thumbsup]

And with all things 'cross, there will be plenty of  [coffee], and most likely plenty of  [drink].

So come one, come all, and watch the crazed masses of masochists carry perfectly ridable bicycles around a race course for no apparent reason other than to torture themselves! [laugh] And you can count on seeing a certain wrench wielding DMFer (yep, your's truly) put his face in the dirt on more than one occasion. [laugh] [laugh] [bang] [laugh] [laugh] [laugh]

Since there was no question of my license status, I decided to play it safe and race in the Men's Cat-C group, at 8:30am. I figured it would be a slightly milder pace, and a good gauge of how my back would handle the abuse.

All said and done, it was a pretty good race. It was actually run in Crocker-Amazon Park, on the lower side of the McLaren golf courses. The course was more suited to a cross country mountain bike race, instead of cyclocross. Super hard-packed and lumpy as hell. [bang] Lots of stutter bumps/brake chop on the descents, and hundreds of gopher holes/mounds in the softer damp soil of the football/softball fields.

The 50 meter "Super Quad" barrier was slightly intimidating. [evil] It was made from 4 floor joists about 12" tall. The intimidation came from knowing that if you clipped a foot, you were going down! Those things had absolutely no flex!! And then there was "The Beast." :o It was a 30 meter run-up, up a 50-ish degree incline that was rock hard and glass smooth on the sides, and ankle deep silt across the middle. There was a fair amount of paved portions and sandy sections mixed in to round things out.

Overall, not a bad return to 'cross racing. I'm guessing I finished in the last third of the field, but I'm not too concerned about it. I held a decent pace, didn't fumble or crash, and finished feeling fairly good. I'll complete the entire series this year, and just make mental notes as it goes along. Next year I will have a training plan, and take a serious shot at an overall podium finish. [thumbsup]

Next race is on November 2nd, at Candlestick Recreation Area.

And now for the ever important post race recovery routine...  [drink] [drink] [drink] [laugh] [laugh] [laugh]

I guess the 8:30am start time was too early for the photographers.... I'm still waiting for the earlier races to post up somewhere so I can grab some pics.

Race #2 of the Bay Area Super Prestige Series is here, and so is the rain. And when you mix the two of them together, you get true cyclocross racing!!

Racing starts at 8:30am, and continues throughout the day (and the rain) until 3pm. I'll be racing in the Masters 35+ B's @ 10am. 40 minutes of wet muddy hell! And you can bet the farm there will be plenty of slippin' -n- slidin' mud soaked crashing all day!! [clap]

So grab your umbrella, and head on over to Candlestick Point for some fast paced, mud slicked, wet, wild and crazy racing action!! [thumbsup] [thumbsup]

Didn't get there till noon today because of a morning commitment.  Missed your race, but I caught the A men and women, and that huge field start of the Bs at the end of the day.  Word was all those folks had it good with better mud pack and all the C groups were racin' on a long slip 'n slide.   [thumbsup]

Too bad I missed it!  And congrats to you.   [beer]

This was the first wet race since 2004, so it was anyone's game. The course was fairly flat, with the elevation changes coming from going over large berms around the park. There was a good sized run-up...nothing like "The Beast" at McLaren... and plenty of mud. [thumbsup] The rains had helped to soften the ground a bit, and knock down much of the harsh choppy bumps (thanks to the gophers), but also gave us some really great muddy flats to negotiate.

My start was better than I thought. I had lined up around mid pack, just to the outside left along the fencing.  I got a good drive off the line, and took a hard tight charge to the inside on first turn. By the second lap, I had  settled into a good pace within the lead pack of the field. According to my co-worker, who was staged just behind me, I dropped about 12-15 riders on my first turn charge, and then dropped about 10 more through the next couple of corners. :o I was holding on to a 20-something place when my back started giving me problems. By the end of it all I had dropped back to 38th out of 60.  [bang]

All told, it was a good day. Conditions were good, and the course was fast and fun. I would've liked to have held on to my lead pack position, but the back wasn't having it. Oh well. This is purely an experimental season for me. I'm planning on a full attack of the 2009 Series, so for now this is going to be a chance to regain my form and try new tactics and set ups.

Next race is on November 15th, @ Sierra Point, starting at 2pm. Master 35+ B's (my group) goes at 4pm. It should be a real entertainer, since the later races being run under the lights! http://www.pilarcitos.com/2008Cross.htm

And keep your calendars clear for Nov 30's race at Golden Gate Park. We're gonna get some folks together, set up the tents and bbq's, and make a day of it!

 [thumbsup] Mud FEST!

GG Park sounds fun!

Glad your back is allowing any racing. Get better!

So, finally, a decent time of day to start racing!! Races started at 2pm, instead of our usual 8:30am [clap]. The Men's Masters 35+ Category B race was at 4. The course was very tight and twisty, with several steep run-ups, and the infamous "Super Quad" barrier in the middle of the course. It was very hard packed ground, with ice plants (nature's oils slicks) and an even covering of grass, a fair amount of rough and chop, and plenty of dust! There was a short paved path on the backside that was a decent straight, where most of the teams had bottle hand-ups staged, and the paved main front straight which became a drag race on each lap! The single most evil part of the course was the first turn. It was a 200 meter charge to a fairly wide and open left hander onto the grass. But you first had to negotiate the curb!! :o They had sand bags lined along the curbside, to ease the transition up onto the grass, and into turn 2.

Warm up sessions were extended to 20 minutes, so I was able to get 2 laps in before staging. Since the turn out this season has been so large, they called up the top 20 riders instead of the usual top 10. After that, the rest of the field lined up behind them. I was 3rd row back, on the outside left along the fencing. The key to 'cross (as with any race) is getting out in front first. A start can make or break your race. If you get stuck in the pack, there just isn't enough time, nor passing opportunities, to get up front before the bell lap.

The whistle blows, and we're off!! I got a good solid drive outside and up the fence line...turn 1 coming up quick! I know the pack will surge to the right, then dive left trying to get a good perpendicular line to hop the sandbags & curbing. I don't want to get caught up in this so I stay to the left, but I don't want to carry so much speed and jump the curbing only to come down right in the line of the turning pack. Now I'm drifting right, and pushing up the pack to the front...here comes the turn.... SHIT!! I'm getting slammed from my right by another rider who zigged when he should've zagged, and is now bouncing off of me and going down hard!!! And we still haven't made the jump into turn 1 yet!! Leaders are through....hopping the curb...drifting a bit as I touch down in the grass and loose dirt...a little shoving and bumping through turn 2...ok, made it!! [thumbsup] Now it's time to start racing!!

From my pre-ride warm up laps, I knew I could ride 100% of the run-ups, and would only have to dismount for the "Super Quad," which is where I can always pick off a few riders. Up the first run-up, and a few guys lost their rear ends on the off camber. Cleared it! Down, around, up the next, back out on the grass and hard pack, over the barriers, up the next couple of run-ups, down the dirt straight into the 180 left, and hammer down the front straight!! Whew.... one lap down, 35-ish minutes of this left to go! [laugh] I was pretty sure I'd gotten a solid start, and was fairly sure I was at least mid pack. I held my pace and rode defensively, but aggressively hunted down the riders ahead of me. By the end of it all, I had gained a bit of ground, and took 25th out of 60. I know I could've placed better, but my back is still being problematic. Some of the problem is also with my bike...I need a slightly longer top tube to help straighten out and stretch my back.

I'm just taking in all of the races this season as lessons learned. My main goal is to complete the series, and use this as a platform to develop my training for next year. If all goes well, I'll move to the Open B category and make a serious attack on the series.

And now for the pictures and even a video!

I'm in in the bright blue with white shoulders and silver helmet, on the right...

Title: Re: O/T: Duckwrench races again! Race #4, Sunday Nov. 30th. I NEED YOUR HELP!!!
Post by: duckwrench13 on November 24, 2008, 02:01:48 PM
It's getting close to race day again... Sunday, November 30th. This time we're in Golden Gate Park. The course is tight and twisting, full of roots, sand, and non-stop elevation changes. In other words, it's gonna be a wheel killer and a leg burner. [evil]

I need some specific help this time. Because it's in GGP, there will be a fair amount of people around, spectators and park-goers alike. And, of course, your typical "city dwelling looking for an easy item to swipe-n-hock for a fix types" as well. There is a neutral pit area, where racers can leave spare bikes, wheels, etc. Maria will be handling "feed zone" duties, so this is the place I need someone to help me out. I need a pit person to handle my spare wheels. I'd hate to pit and find that a $1000 pair of wheels was missing.  :o [bang] The job is really simple. If I flat, or trash a wheel,I can come into the pit for a wheel change. All you have to do is hold my bike while I switch out the wheel(s). It's that easy! [thumbsup]

Racing starts at 8:30am, with the men's Cat-C going out first. I'll be racing in the Master 35 men's Cat-B, at 10am. I'd need a helper there by 9:30, so you can see the course and pits, and be ready for the start at 10. The race is 40 minutes long.

Races run all day, so come on out and get some fast (for human power) racing action. And you can bet your Ducati it will be entertaining...forecast calls for mild rain through Friday, so there will plenty of slick mud to make things interesting! [laugh]

And, as always, there will be plenty of  [bacon] [popcorn] [coffee] [drink] [beer] [thumbsup] [thumbsup]

I finished, on a rapidly deflating tire, and that's about the best I can say. Just an off day all around for me. Flatted going into the last lap and lost around 10ish places. Got home and was running a slight fever. Just wasn't on my game.

I'll post a full report soon.
