How was this a hit and run?  The cyclist passed multiple cars at once and one of them made a legal left turn.   That's why the law says you can only pass one car at once.  The car stayed at the crash.

Huh? what does that have to do with this thread? NOTHING!

This relates to this group in a big way... the guy that died tried to pass several cars while one of them was turning left. He slammed into the car, no fault of the cager.
We here in this group have a tendency to ride fast and pass often We need to think about the possibilities of our actions once in a while and this indecent should be a reminder to us.
OK I sound kinda preachy but what I mean is "be careful out there"!

I don't want to disrespect this guy's memory, but we should definitely use the incident to learn from.

Passing multiple cars at once near intersections is not the kind of thing someone does just once. It is habitual riding behaviour. I'd put money down that this guy took chances like this all the time, and it caught up to him today. There is a prevailing doctrine in this group of "ride fast, take chances, but ride your own ride." Good advice for a track, but the street is not the track. We are responsible for our habits and our culture (which may influence new riders to the group to get out of their depth or to take stupid chances) ...

I know I'm guilty of not always riding with as much caution as I should, esp on 93 going to work.    I'm a very aware rider and pretty cautious, but I still take more risks than I should at times.  While sad to read, it was a nice reminder of how vulnerable I am on a bike.

Manny, you have that so right. This group advocates riding your own ride but for many riders its tough to go along if they're not pushing it.
I'm not sure that culture will ever change but we should all think about it next time there's a group ride.

This guy lost his life, it's a sobering thought  :'(

Reminds me just how lucky I am to not just be alive, but to be able to walk talk and how I was at work the next day.

Yes, it is sad someone passed, but I agree it probably wasn't the first time the guy did it, unfortunatley it was his last though.

That's why the groups are usually waiting for me ;D  I take my time and chose when, and where I will pass, taking into account cross roads and such.

I don't need a story like that to remind me I am human, I think about it everytime I ride.  It does help remind us about the possibilities though.  As Mike said, be safe out there guys.
