Title: Cucciolo smoked my Foggy ! ! !
Post by: MTBryan on October 24, 2008, 10:42:27 AM
OK, now that my tail is no longer between my legs, and I got a new matching PURSE and SKIRT for my Foggy, I have a performance concern.

Julian (Cucciolo) and I were out riding last weekend on some of the most amazing roads I have ever ridden, in middle Tennesse (a bit north and west of Clarksville). We had a complete blast for about 4 hours, and really pushed the bikes on highway 85.

I ride an '01 Foggy with about 5500 miles on it. It is rated at 112 hp. Julian rides an '05 S4R (I think), and I believe it is with the 996 engine and 117 hp. At the end of our day, we were riding a wide open road with a 65mph speed limit. No traffic, no turns. A couple of times I counted to 3 and we both punched it from about 55 mph. Now, this wasn't a scientific test of power. We were just winging it. I started around 4000 rpm in maybe 3rd gear, and he nearly the same. We shut down around 110 mph.

HE FREAK'N SMOKED MY FOGGY!

I figured with a 5 hp difference, he would pull away slowly. But NO. HE TOASTED ME!

It wasn't pretty. Luckily, I was able to stop crying like a baby by the time we got back to our destination about 15 minutes later.

Would you expect this performance difference with only 5 hp difference between the bikes?
Is it the difference in torque between the 996 engine and the 916 engine in play here?
What can I put in his gas tank to slow down his bike without ruining the engine? :)

In the real road world, this difference really doesn't matter. Many of the tight turns we were riding we were pushing hard at around 65mph in the turns. But it's the principle of the thing!

Do you guys differ largely in weight or height? Wind deflection on a larger/broader body, and of course weight could have played a large role?
Maybe your gas tank was full and his was almost empty? Maybe has done alot of weight reduction mods?

dunno, just throwin out ideas...

Gearing?

I would guess gearing would be the main culprit.

That's IT! I am quite a bit taller and heavier than Julian. That's my story and I'm sticking to it! It CAN'T be the bike! I am going to return my Ducati purse and skirt!

Actually, we both have the 15 tooth front sprocket, although I suppose our rear could be different. We had about the same amount of gas since we topped off at the same time.

Switch bikes and re-test.  This will tell you if you extra pounds is the anchor.

what's up Bryan!!

I thought I saw a pink thong at some point when you were tucking in ..but i guess it was the skirt under the leathers.... In that case I suppose our rear are different!!  [laugh]

My weight is 140lb.. I am sure that HP had to do with it too .. torque on mine is 73ftlb what about the foggy?

Those roads were like a race track... it was ridiculously fun!

I didn't get the pink skirt until AFTER I got whooped!

Oh, I am 200 pounds. I think the Foggy has 1 MILLION FOOT POUNDS OF TORQUE (with Dr. Evil accent). Actually, I think it's more like 68 ft lb.

A sixty pound difference is pretty big and if his bike has more power it's only going to help him.  Like someone said earlier switch bikes and try it again, he just may know his bike's power band better and know where to shift etc.

9% bigger motor and about 10% less total weight, yeah, you're going to get smoked.

The weight has alot to do with it. Or perhaps he beat you to the punch and put something your tank.
