Title: Hand gaurds
Post by: scduc on October 25, 2008, 04:26:42 PM
Ok, so I see a pair of the hand gaurds that are on the Hyper for sale on Sleez-bay. The seller wants like $350 or so. Question is will they fit on an 08' S2R. has any one tried this. There are a couple of topics out there as to "get moto hand gaurds" they keep the wind off the hands. I like the idea and i also like the fact that I would get bar-end  mirrors all in one. With the turn signals built in. If any one has done this, please post pics.

I was looking at those. sorry can't help you figure out if they fit. I couldn't bring myself to spend that much for handgaurds that I would only use during the colder months. So I made my own. Today I am going to finish up painting them, not the prettiest things but they will work... i think  ;D

hi scduc,
i replaced the bars on my retard with rizoma bars because the overall width with the mirrors out restrict's your ability to filter.the bars off the retard have a vertical slot milled at both ends 6mm wide and 9mm deep.i tried the hand guards on my s4rs but personally i didn't think that the look was right for a monster.the guards, mirrors and indicators were sold to a guy with a multistrada and he cracked one of the hand guards because of the missing slot so be warned ,[he didn't want the bars].well good luck with the project i hope this answers your question

Here is what I came up with. I am using these for colder riding not for looks, indicators, and mirrors all in one. There not perfect but they were free and work for me. If anyone is interested in these I could do a write up on how I made them.

Not sure this interests you. But I wanted to solve the frozen fingers for this winter. So in looking at more than a few places I came across something from Moose Racing.

It is a foam handguard that is relatively cheap, easy to install and I'm getting one.

Moose Racing Foam Hand Guard
Part Number 0635-0661
Cost is $19.95

I'll let you know how it mounts up/works. I just don't have any room on my clip ons so I would have to fab something... These mount with a velcro wrap on the inner side, and screw mount to the bar end. We'll see what happens.

The stock handguards from a Suzuki V-strom are a nearly direct fit if the have the hollow pivot bolts for your levers.  The plastic needs trimmed about 1/4 inch around coffin brake master and the inner diameter of the end needs widened to use the stock bar ends.

Not the prettiest things, but the did help keep the wind off my hands.   Ended up buying a V-Strom, so now they are mounted on it.

Just looked into the V-Strom guards:
right 57341-27G00-291
left 57541-06G10-291
about $15 each...not bad

Ive been wanting a set for a while and bought a set for a KTM without checking clearance on the master cylinders.  Had to give em to my Bro-in-law for his 950 SM.  For a bike with the radio masters looks like the only ones that are sure to fit would be those for a HyperMoto.

If you come up with something that will work, I'd love to know.

Moose racing has some nice hardware, I had no idea how huge these would be.

As for the avatar...it's part of the statue at Barber Motorsports Park

A week ago I emailed acerbis about the hand guard situation.
They did reply today with info that they are coming out with something.

"We have the 'Dual Road' handguard coming out in December that will work
perfect on your bike. Email us then and we should know who will be
stocking them. "

We'll see if it works out. I was specific about using them on an S2R with clip ons.
... now you know!

I have Buell handguards.  They bolt right on and are OK for moderately colder temps and very good when its rainy, but when it gets down lower than the mid-30's they dont do much of anything.  V-strom handguards are where its at.  They rock, but are a bit more expensive than what I wanted to pay.

Does anyone have pictures of the vstrom handguards on a monster?  This sounds like it would be the ticket for my monster that I have somewhat set up for touring.

I just finished mounting the V-strom guards a few minutes ago.  Some fiddling, but a good end result.  I'll get some pictures up.

Bump for the pics, Old and Slow!  Just got back from a 30-40 minute ride about town and no matter which gloves I use, that wind is just killer.  As far as aesthetics are concerned, I couldn't give less of a shit what my bike looks like in the winter/rain.  Comfort is key here.

Bill, did you ever find about those Acerbis guards?  I'm getting antsy here.

Well I see from googlin that they show up on a few websites.
Base Hand Guard (Powersports did list them for less $120. They would not come up with a normal search. Damn database... but I did find it hence the update to this post.

Motostrano lists them at $140 plain plus $40 for the LED option

There is also a youtube video of them on a suzuki. Not sure if it is for install demo, but it shows different stages of install, not sure you can just remove parts but who knows.
I may go for these.

THIS JUST IN... found some more specs on another page...

-Universal mounting kit included
-Including balance weight against vibration.

My only worry  is how or if this will affect the use of bar end mirrors. We'll see how it goes. Anyway I do have a pair of moose ears (they are freakn huge) that probably serve better as a chest protector than a hand guard. When I bought them, I was on the bike, so I flattened them out and stuck them on my chest/zipped the jacket up. I swear you could have wacked me with a Louisville slugger and I would have shrugged it off. (they are made of formed foam/fabric)

So which site did you order them from? If you ordered the expensive ones I'll order the cheap ones and we can compare.  ;)

The $25 thing is the upgrade to the LED, about the same on either site.

The pricing on the base hand guard is cheaper at powersports.

I ordered from Motostrano. I could not get the powersports site to pull up the hand guard, it would only show the LED option. So today I find it, and it is cheaper there. Oh well.

Edited earlier post to reflect the newly found link.

Yeah, I had problems finding the guard itself on the power sports site too.

The Acerbis look cool but the wind protection seems minimal due to the low profile design.  We'll find out soon from those that bought them.  Hopefully they will rock and then I'm buying.

How about an old school solution:  Hippo hands and electrically heated grip wraps?  The solution is not pretty, but both items can be removed when the weather warms up, and meanwhile you can ride with summer gloves.  See:

Slick lookin guards, billg.  They do look a little skimp, give us an update after a few 20 or less degree rides  :)

Hideous Hippo hands work. My Bro-in-law bought me a small set for X-mas a couple of years ago and they worked great. Except for at somewhere north of 100 mph they began to actuate the clutch and brake levers on they're own. Mine didn't have the aluminum rib/frame inside.

Well not that I've been hoping for another cold front to come through... being in South Georgia we are back to 70 degree weather. I will be putting some more miles on them with my 6 hour trip to Florida next week (apologizes to my ST3s, I want to ride the S2R... if this keeps up I may have to sell her for a SFs, but I'm trying to repress that thought for now)... where was I, Oh yes... If I get into any cold weather, I'm sure to post a follow up.

Looks-wise, getting more use to how they appear. I would say that if you stripped off the wind screen and ditched the stock blinkers, they would not be so obvious. Sort of looks too busy with everything there.

Still no word on the LED's. Motostrano still hasn't gotten them in yet or they are celebrating the new year early.

One tidbit unrelated to the hand guards but related to the reason, cold weather, I had my mom add two pieces of black jean material to the hind area of my first gear tech pants. In stock form, you spend more energy trying to keep from sliding off or injuring the frank n beans. Jean pieces added just enough friction to grip the seat.
