Title: 2008 S2R1000 Project Ideas and Discussion Post by: army_intel on November 02, 2008, 06:24:16 PM So I am currently in Iraq dreaming of getting back to Colorado Springs to my Duc. I have been trolling these boards for quite some time now looking for ideas and ways to mod my bike. (Stock just isnt my nature) I have come up with a number of mods that I want to do, and I am looking for feedback, opinions, and suggestions as to what will and will not work together. Since I am a single E-6 with zero bills and a paid off bike, my budget isnt that limited, which the exception of trading it in for a S4R.
Just to give you an idea of what I am trying to create, I have a Black 2008 S2R1000. I am really trying to black out my bike, so a number of paint/mods are planned to do so. Exhaust- I have already preordered/placed a deposit on Motocreations Boom Tubes, and looking to get them painted black. Intake - I was going to do with PODs at first, but I have realized this probably wont work and I am going with a DP Open Airbox/Filter. Tuning- I dont want to spend the cash on a DP ECU, so for starters I am going to check out the Fat Duc O2 Eliminator. Tail Chop - Already did Cookies before I deployed, but looking to grab a LED rear light integration kit and a SupaBrake from Vizitec (He has one on hold for me) Front Headlight/Gauges - I saw a great mod on here to lower them under the triple, and I am going to paint the ring and assemblage black for style and go with some low profile LED front signals Triple/Clip-ons - I really want to get rid of the handlebars and go with some clip-ons, and I figured I might as well replace the entire triple with a SpeedyMoto one. I am an average height guy (5'11"), so while I want some clip ons, I would prefer the stock handlebar angle so I dont have to lean too far forward on longer rides. I read a couple of people are having some problems with the SpeedyMoto Clip-ons, and Ranger06 suggested the Woodcraft ones. ClutchCover-SpeedyMoto 5 spoke (just looks in sync with the wheels) 14T Front Sprocket I am sure I there are somethings I am leaving out, but since I just got my flu shot and feel lightheaded, my mind isnt right and any and all suggestions/comments/feedback is welcome! Thanks! Ceramic Paint!
Intake - I was going to do with PODs at first, but I have realized this probably wont work and I am going with a DP Open Airbox/Filter. I think motocreations designed the boomtubes with the intent of putting them on a stock system without the need for modifying fueling too much. You might be able to get away with it. Tail Chop - Already did Cookies before I deployed, but looking to grab a LED rear light integration kit and a SupaBrake from Vizitec (He has one on hold for me) Dont get the LED board, it sucks ( i have one and its not bright at all, but if your not worried about that then by all means get it) vizitech makes a 460L superled thingy, if thats what your talking about, that thing is the shit! Triple/Clip-ons - I really want to get rid of the handlebars and go with some clip-ons, and I figured I might as well replace the entire triple with a SpeedyMoto one. If you wait long enough speedymoto is trying to make ones designed for the monster. But if you are going to lower your headlight, you can use them without issue. The fitment issue was due to the headlight and blinkers + coffins (which you dont have) The same applies to any clip on without any rise (such as the apex) Stay safe Title: Re: 2008 S2R1000 Project Ideas and Discussion Post by: army_intel on November 02, 2008, 07:04:05 PM I was definetly thinking ceramic paint!
Good point about the headlight lowering...I dont get home until after the first of the year, so I might just make it in time for the SpeedyMoto Monster Clip-ons. Yes I was talking about the Vizitec 460L LED +SupaBrake. The idea of a blinking brake light seriously appeals to me since both my brother and I have been nearly rearended by soccer moms on cell phones. Title: Re: 2008 S2R1000 Project Ideas and Discussion Post by: Monstermash on November 02, 2008, 11:03:37 PM Before you make a final decision on the Boom Tubes, do yourself a favor and listen to a bike with them installed. It's not that they sound bad, just really loud and different. By different, I mean they make the bike sound more like a Harley than a Ducati.
Title: Re: 2008 S2R1000 Project Ideas and Discussion Post by: army_intel on November 03, 2008, 03:40:45 AM Mash, I have heard the sound of boomtubes, and I love that loud, Harley-like sound. I also love how they clean up the rear wheel. I am doing it not only for sound but "eye appeal" as well.
Title: Re: 2008 S2R1000 Project Ideas and Discussion Post by: Duck-Stew on November 03, 2008, 07:41:34 AM Yeah, but a Harley can't pull 8500 rpm!!! But yeah...they're loud. With that much more air going into the engine (DP filter & box-top) and that much air going out of the engine (boomtubes) you will need some more fuel. So, that will need to be addressed.
Other then the ceramic coating on the exhaust, I think you've got a winner there!!! You may have to wait a while for the Vizitec unit, and thats if your on the waiting list. Title: Re: 2008 S2R1000 Project Ideas and Discussion Post by: army_intel on November 03, 2008, 10:03:27 AM Yeah I know I am going to have a fuel problem, but aside from the DP ECU ($$$$$$$) and RB3 (Heard too many bad things), I dont have many options in the ECU box.
Title: Re: 2008 S2R1000 Project Ideas and Discussion Post by: army_intel on November 03, 2008, 02:15:04 PM What type of paint do you recommend for exhaust then?
Title: Re: 2008 S2R1000 Project Ideas and Discussion Post by: NAKID on November 04, 2008, 02:37:48 PM I have the S2R1000 prototype boomtubes on mine. They are the ones Mash is talking about. I am currently running them without baffles and yes, they are LOUD, but I don't think they sound like Harley pipes. A Ducati's exhaust note is distinctive, straight pipes or not...
Title: Re: 2008 S2R1000 Project Ideas and Discussion Post by: army_intel on November 04, 2008, 04:27:15 PM Nakid, then you are a man I need to talk to. Are you running stock intake and stock ECU?
Title: Re: 2008 S2R1000 Project Ideas and Discussion Post by: He Man on November 04, 2008, 05:30:16 PM I believe he runs his bike with a Power Commander III on his '06.
I have an RB3 unit...... its with RB right now to get the firmware updated....still... Title: Re: 2008 S2R1000 Project Ideas and Discussion Post by: army_intel on November 04, 2008, 05:43:26 PM So I suppose the difference is that the 06 doesnt have the Euro 3 emissions and I do.... I know there arent that many differences between the 06 and 08. [bang]
Title: Re: 2008 S2R1000 Project Ideas and Discussion Post by: He Man on November 04, 2008, 05:50:58 PM the 06 has the same euro3 emission standards. Its just the ECU is different.
Title: Re: 2008 S2R1000 Project Ideas and Discussion Post by: NAKID on November 04, 2008, 07:06:35 PM He Man speaks the truth. I run a custom PCIII, vented airbox and the boomtubes with no baffles. I have an 06 which has the O2 sensor, but no issues with the engine light staying on with it disconnected....

I have an 06 which has the O2 sensor, but no issues with the engine light staying on with it disconnected.... Have you tried riding it in cold weather yet? As flursdog pointed out, he had issues running the PCIII on his 06 S2R1k which ironically are symptoms that you hear about in applications of the PCIII in '07. Because when (at this point mostly if) my Rapid Bike III comes back into my possession, I might just give it up to get a PCIII instead since it has more positive results... Title: Re: 2008 S2R1000 Project Ideas and Discussion Post by: army_intel on November 04, 2008, 07:15:35 PM So my best bet is to pray to the Ducati Gods that they come up with a PCIII for the 08 S2R1k before I get home next year, deal with a fuel management problem, or shell out some cash for a DP ECU.
Sounds like this might get more expensive than I wanted. :-\ He-man do you have any sexy pictures of your Prototype Boomtubes for me? I was planning on getting mine without baffles as well. Thats NAKID with the prototypes, not me...well..if NAKID gave them to me... id be glad to take some boomtube erotica! Also,im not sure if you are aware of the sticky at the top of this forum. Its all about options for our closed loop bikes, including the famous RB unit. Title: Re: 2008 S2R1000 Project Ideas and Discussion Post by: q monster on November 05, 2008, 05:21:19 AM Sounds kewl A-I but i think you're going to probably have to fit the DP ECU - i tried to get away with out it but it wasn't satisfactory. i've got the DP open filter and Spark midpipe/headers and it was too lean with the standard ECU - always giving me the shits in not performing properly. so, fitted the DP ECU and retuned it - perfection - better performance, better behaviour.
i've done a similar reworking of the 08 S2R1k and i love it. Title: Re: 2008 S2R1000 Project Ideas and Discussion Post by: army_intel on November 05, 2008, 06:45:38 AM Where did you get your DP ECU??? I have a feeling I might be able to get a better deal if I get it from someone else besides my Ducati Dealer.

I have a feeling I might be able to get a better deal if I get it from someone else besides my Ducati Dealer. Got it from my friendly ducati dealer - but he's a mate so did a good deal. otherwise the price ducati charge you're f'ed. [bang] [bang] if you go for the DP ECU dont let your red key get near it. then you can change it over to your next ducati! Title: Re: 2008 S2R1000 Project Ideas and Discussion Post by: army_intel on November 12, 2008, 07:47:38 AM Since I am going with clip-ons, I was wondering which bars to use? Also what levers and grips do you guys recommend?
Title: Re: 2008 S2R1000 Project Ideas and Discussion Post by: DucMouse the Mighty on November 13, 2008, 11:54:45 AM if u wanting to black out the bike...powder coat the swing arm [thumbsup] my friend did that to his and its pretty spankin pimp...
as for levers i would go with pazzo [thumbsup] i luv mine..i had them on my old bike, i just need to put them on my new one... Title: Re: 2008 S2R1000 Project Ideas and Discussion Post by: He Man on December 11, 2008, 07:25:03 AM hey ducmouse got a pic of his bike? Just wanna see if it was a gloss or matte PC finish.
Title: Re: 2008 S2R1000 Project Ideas and Discussion Post by: TAftonomos on December 11, 2008, 07:41:31 AM Straightpipes sound like butthole when you close the trottle. How anyone can feel different is beyond me. Sounds like a smaller version of a civic driver that takes the exhaust off and runs open headers "because it sounds cool".
It's too bad to, because the look is there, but the sound. Yeah, it's distinctive. Kinda like comparing horse shit to cow shit. It's different. Ack. Rest of the list, A+ :) [thumbsup] Title: Re: 2008 S2R1000 Project Ideas and Discussion Post by: He Man on December 11, 2008, 08:13:33 AM Straightpipes sound like butthole when you close the trottle. From the video Nakid posted, i cant agree with you more. when you close the throttle its like hell let loose and things have gone mad. It just doenst sound right. Kinda like a Mack truck on the highway. Title: Re: 2008 S2R1000 Project Ideas and Discussion Post by: army_intel on December 11, 2008, 01:46:19 PM But I love the sound!!
I have already added a few things to the mod piece. Instead of speedymoto triple I am going with the Rizoma triple with clipons, Rizoma grips, and possibly ASV levers. I am also going to get the Front forks hard anodized black, remove the front tire plastic cover. I am also going to get a couple of other things on the left side of the bike powdercoated. It should be an interesting project when I get finished! Anyone have any luck or feedback on the ECU upgrade that Monstermash (I think it was him) was doing? Title: Re: 2008 S2R1000 Project Ideas and Discussion Post by: DucNrun on December 11, 2008, 03:21:54 PM People seem to be getting results with the Fat Duc 02 manipulator. And it's a helluva lot cheaper than an ECU reflash--not to mention you don't risk your ECU getting lost in the mail or getting fried, etc.
