Okay which is the best and how much is it ?
Not to keen on those alarm ones as they sound like a gimmick or are they ?
What size reach and hole should I be looking for?

This thread will be fun. I am however interested in serious responses as well.

IMO disc locks can be dangerous,I have heard of many dropping their bikes and have lost a many  front guards with them when forgetting to remove them.on the other hand the alarm ones are ok as they do warn you if you forget to remove them.

take it where you want but please give me at least one suggestion that is about LOCKS not C#CKS  ;)

Currently using the large Kryptonite type disc lock with the barrel type key, seem ok, and the fleuro lanyard that goes around your throttle grip is a very good idea  [thumbsup]. 

Been over the handlebars meself 'cos of a disc lock.  :-[  ;D

Paid around $80 but that was a few years ago!! ;)

At least they stop a bike being wheeled or ridden away. But the serious knockerofferer picks 'em up and throws them into an enclosed van I've been told.  [leo]

Me too, fortunately it was with my first ever ride, a little pissy (but NEW) Honda 250.
Smashed the mirrors and Scratched up Helmet and various things. It was a self-loathing experience.  [bang]


Thieves these days, they've got the thieving down pat. From what I've heard and seen, there's no way in hell these disc locks will deter them at all.
1 bike would be easy enough to drag away for 1 person, and light enough to pick up by 2 people. Unless they're trying to steal a hulking great Goldwing or something.

Those motion detecting ones seem the safest bet, and only really effective if equipped with those that send a warning via SMS or whatever.

Otherwise it's a thick chain through the trellis and around an immovable object.

Ditto.  I use the large kryptonite disc lock. I travel heaps, leaving my bike outside motel rooms all over the place and it gives me a little piece of mind but agree with dragonworld, they only serve as a deterrent to spoonheads. Serious low-lifes will just lift them up.

So I reckon chains bolted to the floor when at home in the garage is the go when living in risky places like cities. (I'm beyond the black stump - they only steal chookies and sisters out here !)

And I really should get one of the fluoro straps.  Haven't been over the handlebars yet, come close though.  [laugh]

Now that is funny!

I went for the Zena noisy alarm lock but they are anoying when they go off!

The alarm does alert you to the little sucker when it is on the disc.

So many times I have forgotten about that damn disc lockso the noise is good for me Mr forgetful! [roll]

Disc locks are OK if you are away from your usual garage, cos at least its better than nothing, if you are serious about locking up when at home use cable instead of chain, bolt cutters will not go through cable as easily as chain as its bogs them down, and use a shielded padlock. always go through either the swingarm or frame and into whatever device you come up with that is bolted to the floor, then use either a baby monitor or a proximity alarm, and last but definately not least, dont get slack and not use them when you park the bike up at the end of the day.

I've got a cable that ties the bike to the trailer which is chained to the garage post.  [thumbsup]

Also I use a bike cover that renders the bike unrecognisable when fitted.  At least passers by don't know what's under there.

My theory is that if I can make it harder and take a bit longer they might be deterred.  Still, if someone really wants it they will no doubt find a way.

Interesting concept. Pitty they only show Jap bikes for suitability.
