Got my kit in today and decided to paint it black. I used Rust-Oleum High Heat paint. The color is BAR-B-QUE black and as pictured comes out to a matte black color with a hint of gray. It's not black black.
The spray paint is almost idiot proof. I layered the paint on pretty thick and it still dried just fine without any globs.
I have some more bits outside drying. Oh, don't worry about the LED assembly. I taped up the clear lens.

I used the same product for mine. I gave it several coats and thought all would be well. Just so you know, this paint scuffs and marks up quite easy (even with a bump from a fingernail when installing). I wish I was a little more patient and got the kit powder coated. I still may.
I concur with what you stated about it scuffing too easily. I'm not worried though. I'm sure it'll get dirty with road grime.
The best paint to use for things like this is Duplicolor low gloss engine enamel.
The stuff is designed topaint engine blocks, and actually cures with heat.
I have painted frames, parts, exhausts, and so on with this stuff and always had great results.
Just scuff the piece with some light sane paper, spray lots of light coats, and let it sit in the sun for awhile (like hours) before you install/touch it.
It'll be fine. It's one of the parts/pieces that I hardly pay attention to.
Here's a quick picture. It looks sort of crooked. I fixed it after this picture.
