Title: Oil sending unit interchangeability? Post by: Jumptship on November 05, 2008, 06:13:15 PM About a week ago I left the house on my 2005 S4R and just at the end of the driveway I noticed my oil light was still faintly glowing. I shut down the bike and wheeled back to the garage. After doing a visual on the oil level (good) I did some internet research and found the oil sending unit was a likely suspect. I was able to track down the part number to 53940302A.
Now to find this part...I live in Valdosta, GA. Closest dealer is in Tallahassee (75 miles) but I was going to Atlanta and figured I would stop at the dealer there and see if they had one in stock. As luck would have it Atlanta Motorworld had one. But, when I looked at what they gave me compared to what was on the bike the connectors were different. The original had a pin type connector and the new one had a blade type connector, also my original had the pressure stamped into of .15 - .4 bar and the new one had .3 - .6 bar. I asked the parts counter rep and he explained that my part number had been rolled into this one (Part number on the box is 69921511A, 900M 98). Needless to say I was skeptical. I did some research earlier and found this is indeed for a 98 M900 and no reference to it going on a 4v. I got it installed but had to put a new connector on the wire to fit the blade type pin but can anyone tell me the new part (69921511A) is interchangeable for my original (53940302A)? After the install my light is off, however, I am still skeptic on if this is correct or if I just got sold some overstock POS. Title: Re: Oil sending unit interchangeability? Post by: Capo on November 06, 2008, 03:00:43 AM This switch is an acceptable substitute, you will get a low oil pressure indication at a slightly higher point than the original unit.
However, I doubt that Ducati is selling this as a direct replacement as clearly it is not, modifications to the wiring being required. Some times parts guys can be over helpful and get out of their technical depth. Title: Re: Oil sending unit interchangeability? Had the bike gotten wet before you noticed this? Rain, washing, lots of dew? Water getting into the connection can cause the pressure warning light to come on dimly. Water getting into the connection can cause the pressure warning light to come on dimly. I did wash it and did the pilgrimmage to Indy (lots of rain to and from). There was some moisture in the connector initially and I tried airing it out it out and let it dry but no difference...I was hoping it was that easy of a fix |
