So apparently with a Ducati, the sound of cracking carbon fiber really does apply to the statement: 'stop when it sounds expensive'

When dad started to ask if there were any other places besides MotoCorsa to get Ducati parts he piqued my curiosity. Hey it's kind of almost Christmas. Lol

Unfortunately it wasn't the good kind. As dad was trying to pivot my bike out of the way in the garage, his forearm flexing was enough to stress the carbon fiber piece beneath the seat.  He was so upset with himself and wants to buy a new one. Which I give him cedut for. But he's a bit low on the finances, and I don't want to stress him.

So my question to you guys is....are there any aftermarket places to pick that piece up, and god help me, how much do you think that'll run?

You could also see if Cheshire has anything laying around has a temp piece... a lot of people pull that piece off their bike.

Hmm, really?  Strictly cosmetic reasons, or other, for taking it off?

I took those pieces off of my 750 awhile ago and would be willing to give them away, There not Carbon Fiber but they are a black metallic. i could send you pics if you would like there in good shape.  [thumbsup]

How bad is it?  You might be able to patch it from the back with an epoxy/fiberglass surfboard repair kit.  Then maybe just sand and clearcoat the front.

As Scott says, if the crack ain't visible from the front, patch it on the back with a fiber/epoxy repair kit.  I'm sure one or more of us could help you with that.  I've fixed and reinfoced automotive door cards and speaker mounts with fiberglass & epoxy, and I worked with my design team at Embry-Riddle to build an 8-foot e-glass aircraft tailboom (a scale model from our design) for a structural test.  Since we couldn't afford to go someplace with a giant autoclave and use pre-preg, that was a giant (and messy) wet layup.

Otherwise... I think Carbonworld (http://www.carbonworld.de/shop/Ducati/Monster-S2R800-S2R1000/Carbon:::143_329_330.html) might have the part you're looking for, but no guarantees it's exactly like the OEM one.

I'm not nearly as intelligent in this area as 95% of the people that visit this forum, but it is my understanding that you should err on the side of replacing carbon fiber parts if they are broken or have a possibility of breaking. Especially when they are near moving parts of the motorcycle (like the wheels). I have been told by a few people that when carbon fiber parts break they can unravel and get inside the moving parts and cause injury or even death depending on the situation. If there is any reason for you to believe that it isn't in mint condition I would definitely replace it before riding anywhere with it still on.

As I said before I am not nearly as versed in this sort of thing as most of you so by all means correct me where I am wrong.

Is this piece the rear wheel hugger? I purchased mine off of eBay. I was unsure of the quality of the carbon fiber hugger and fitment on my 06 s2r 1000 but the price was the lowest I had seen it anywhere and figured it would be worth a try. It looks like there is another auction from the same person on eBay. I received it within 2 weeks (shipped from China). Install was quite a bit harder than I had thought; I'm not sure if the more reputable Ducati carbon fiber manufacturers make rear wheel huggers that fit better but this one almost seemed too small (though after some cajoling it finally fit). After all is said and done I am satisfied with the purchase, the price made up for the install difficulties.

With all of that said, if you/your dad has the extra cash I would go for something that is more reputable than the person I bough from but if cash is an issue and you want a cheap CF hugger that looks good you should try it... Nordy... in some circumstances, those concerns would be valid.  Fortunately for Femme, this is not one of them.  The side panels she's talking about are non structural, and do not have long enough fibers to get tangled in anything that would cause catastrophic damage.  I think the whole panel is what... 3"x8" or 3"x9" or thereabouts?

Actually looking at my avatar is great.  It's THAT piece that is cracked, same side too.  Lol  it's below the "s2r1000" bit, and maybe an inch long.  The crack is vertical.  So I'm guessing at this point replacement is a better option.  And as BibleBoy said...  yes definitely NOT a structural part of the bike.  heck if it was, it may not have cracked as easily.  Lol

I took those off my s2r... but cant find any pics... it gave it a cool look.

So looked better without them, or with them?  The way the carbon fiber is laid goes So well with the seat, almost seems as one. :)

play with it your self... take off one side and look at it... you may have to move some wires though.

in my opinion I prefer the look with out. Monster's are meant to have the least amount of plastic and That extra bit of frame make's it look tougher, "mad max style". You do have to mess with the wiring but it really doesn't require any unhooking of them, just a ziptie or two. [thumbsup]

Femme, don't know where you are but I'm in Lake Oswego.  If you've already written it off then drop it off at my place and let me see what I can do.  I think I've got the repair materials in the garage already.  Just pay for the clearcoat if we need a can.  And I can maybe put some reinforcing fiberglass onto the back of both of them if you like.  They'll be heavier but won't crack so easily.

It's raining and I've been home sick all week.  I'm bored :(
