Tomorrow we're making a bunch of mexican food, cheap south of the boarder beer, and margaritas. [drink]
How do you guys make yours?
I like a squeezed lime with tequila and tripple sec. Most don't though. So post 'em up
Thanks!
BTW: we need a smiley doin' a shot for Teddy and the guys over in the drunk thread. ;D
I thought about asking over there but knew the only reply I would get would be to drink the tequila straight! [cheeky]
How many people are you trying to serve. The classic recipe of lime, tequila, and cointreau is great if you're only making a few and if you have good tequila. If you're making in bulk, that can get prohibitively expensive.
As a former bartender at a club, here's the quick, cheap and panty dropping way to do it.
Cheapest 100% agave tequila available
Rose's lime
Sour mix or non neon colored margarita mix
Triple sec
Real limes
Fill a glass with ice. Do 3 parts tequila to 2 parts sour to 1 part rose's lime and triple sec.
Pour that out into a shaker
Rim the glass with salt
Pour back into glass
Garnish with wedge of lime
It's not glamorous, but it'll get the job done and works great in bulk. If it's just you and 3 other people, just get yourself a 750 of Milagra, a 250 of cointrea, a few limes and knock yourself out.
i've used limeaid as a mixer instead of a margarita mix for a party crowd

[laugh] We'll see if I can get my wife to drink some. [wine] (not holding my breath. she doesn't drink much at all )
4-6 people
Sounds like a good recipe! [thumbsup]
At the Rio in Ft Collins CO. I think they add apple juice to theirs. I've tried that and it's not to bad.
Any more?
I'm a huge fan of the Cuervo Golden Margarita mix...you can drink it strait from the bottle since it already has Cuervo tequila and Grand Marnier in it...it's soooooo good and you can add more tequila if it doesn't have enough kick!

Heeeere I come to save the daaaayy!
How oh how did a margarita thread exist for more than 18.7 seconds without my knowing? My tequila-senses must be failing me.
First, the classic - which in this case is a take on XiaoNio's (Little bull?):
3 parts Sauza Hornitos Reposado
2 parts Cointreau (or Grand Marnier, if you like)
1 part Rose's lime juice.
I prefer to shake over ice and pour straight, but do as you like. This gives a very good, but strong, tequila-centric margarita. My favorite by far.
Next - The Party Pleaser
2 parts tequila (I tend to mix Hornitos Reposado or Don Julio Reposado - both are about $27/bottle)
2 parts Cointreau
1 part Rose's lime juice
1 part sour mix
1 part orange juice
This is a milder, fruitier, easier on the ladies (no offense, it's just what I've seen) margarita. It also stretches your booze a bit more.
Third: The I'm Soused so who gives a crap
2 parts anything blanco
2 parts Squirt soda
1 part go crazy
The last one was my college recipe. It works.
There are lots of options in here, working from the same basic recipe. You really want to use good tequila. I used to think that Patron Silver was the best margarita tequila - though useless on it's own - but now I like the Hornitos. It's reasonably priced and has a good fruitiness that works well in margaritas. As XiaoNio said, at the very least, make sure it's 100% agave. And if you are going to experiment, I would recommend a blanco. The reposados I have listed work well, but others can be very, well, wrong.
If you can find it, Gran Gala is a good substitution for Cointreau/ Gran Marnier, and much cheaper to boot.
My wife likes the Party Pleaser, but i use 1/2 part orange juice and 1/2 part lime-aid.
Good luck and let me know what Tristo's margarita madness can do for you!
I think I need to go to town to get me a bottle of Herradura (my fave) and some mix. [thumbsup]

whew! I'll sleep better tonight. [cheeky]
A tasty variation if you can lay your hands on some -- add a couple tablespoons of prickly pear syrup. Adds a very exotic sweet/bitter flavor and turns the drink a vivid magenta color. Normally, I'm opposed to putting anything other than sunlight in good liquor, but these have been a big hit whenever we've made 'em.

Admittedly, what follows is NOT a margarita recipe. In my opinion, a good margarita cannot be made in bulk. At most, 2 at a time can be made in a shaker. However, beergaritas go down quite well at parties and are quick and easy and are sort of margarita-like with the bonus of fizziliciousness.
Beergaritas
1 can frozen concentrated limeaid, slightly thawed
1 can of tequila (we tend to use Cuervo Gold as our mixing tequila)
1 can of light Mexican lager (this may be the only good use for Corona, but I prefer Sol)
1 can of 7-up (preferred in this application over Sprite)
Mix.
Serve.
People, Rose's lime juice is an abomination.

OK, I can accept that, I guess. I hate eggplant, which my wife loves, and I can accept that, too. She's desperately wrong, of course, but I can accept it...
Just try a margarita made with something that actually tastes like limes (I recommend fresh lime juice as a great example) and you'll see how different they are. You could take fresh lime juice and load it up with sugar to match exactly the sweetness of Rose's and see just how boiled and chemical Rose's tastes.
It's like the difference between the cheapest, nastiest frozen concentrated orange juice compared with fresh-squeezed, only worse.
Incidentally, Rose's Lime Cordial (the original product from England) is considerably better than what we can easily find here. It's supposed to be the same, but we diluted it according to the instructions to make limeade and it wasn't half bad. My 8 year-old gagged on the same thing made with Rose's Lime Juice. Bleagh.

Also there's a big difference between fresh-squeezed limes and the bottled stuff (that includes the stuff that comes in that squeezy plastic green thing).
Makes a big difference in both drinks and cooking (same goes for lemon juice). [thumbsup]
I actually used to use fresh lime juice (we had a lime tree in the yard. that helped), and still will occasionally, but usually desire the extra sweetness. For some reason, and I know this is dumb, I feel better using Rose's than adding simple syrup. If I don't see the sugar, it must not be there!
