Title: SKY DIVING! Post by: He Man on May 10, 2008, 07:48:10 PM OKay whos been? i did it, (god alwful experience because of the person i was with) but the jump was awesome. I have to admit though, riding the twisties is a bit more fun. And a track day would be much more worth it, but jumping out of an airplane is so peaceful. I guess its a concentration vs being somewhere that many people havent been. I think i may have found myself a summer job, and i could go with doing a jump every 2 weeks until i can jump by myself. The best part was dangling my feet out of the airplane, and the inital jump to terminal velocity after that it was just smooth sailing. We did a few spins, but i like going straight down like a bullet better. We didnt pop the canopy until 3,000feet though, and after 5000 the ground seemed to be comming in pretty damn quick.
Was i scared? not really Nervous? not really. I wish i could dangle my feet out of the airplane longer. Or carry more weight on me so i can reach a higher terminal velocity though. I best part was still the first 10 seconds of sitting on the edge and the intial jump. But the freefall was probably the most calming thing you could ever do. Nothing but clear sky, air, and frozen finger tips! On the way home, we took a cab to the train station, the cab driver had an anxiety attack hearing about my friend talk about it. He pulled over and started shaking. said he didnt want to crash the car, and he just sat there sweating. Discuss Title: Re: SKY DIVING! Title: Re: SKY DIVING! Post by: mstevens on May 10, 2008, 11:02:23 PM Different things scare different people. Personally, I'd never jump out of a plane unless it were about to explode. On the other hand, I've shown people movies of my 13 year-old while scuba diving entering the Devil's Throat in Cozumel at 120 feet and they think we're totally insane for doing that sort of thing. One person's thrills are another's panic and a third person's boredom, I suppose.

New, currently drunken, monster owner with a funky sense of humor [beer] On your guys point though I feel the same way..I'm more or less drawn to the adrenaline stuff and the risk of dying is a thrill....but spiders scare me. [roll] Go figure. Damn creepy unnatural eight legged crawly things suckin the juices out of another living thing... just isn't right. No sir, it isn't right. Title: Re: SKY DIVING! I couldn't agree more. I knew someone who kept tarantulas as pets. Now, really... Title: Re: SKY DIVING! Post by: NAKID on May 11, 2008, 12:23:20 AM Weight won't affect terminal velocity, shape will though...
Title: Re: SKY DIVING! Post by: eltristo on May 11, 2008, 01:27:19 AM What an odd coincidence! I was just discussing how I have never thought about skydiving without seeing my own death. I am just that certain.
Title: Re: SKY DIVING! Post by: teddy037.2 on May 11, 2008, 03:22:43 AM I've done it.
I liked it. I would do it again... [thumbsup] Title: Re: SKY DIVING! Post by: tommys67 on May 11, 2008, 04:44:17 AM Somehow, an abject fear of heights and a mild fear of flying probably doesn't make me a good candidate for sky diving :-X
Title: Re: SKY DIVING! Post by: c_rex on May 11, 2008, 05:35:40 AM I did a tandem jump years ago. There was a woman in our plane who was so scared she started chanting, "I don't think I can do this." over and over as she and her dive master squatted in the open doorway. After about 5 times all we heard was "I don't think..." and she was gone. On the ground everyone was so jacked up on adrennaline that couldn't stop talking about how cool it had been.
Highly recommend this activity and buy as much airspace as they offer. It's over so quickly. Title: Re: SKY DIVING! Post by: mstevens on May 11, 2008, 08:15:22 AM Weight won't affect terminal velocity, shape will though... Didn't Gallileo Gallilei demonstrate that a little while back? Title: Re: SKY DIVING! Post by: somegirl on May 11, 2008, 08:30:57 AM It's on my lifetime to-do list. [thumbsup]
Title: Re: SKY DIVING! Post by: He Man on May 11, 2008, 08:50:16 AM Didn't Gallileo Gallilei demonstrate that a little while back? By definition Terminal velocity is the speed at which the force of drag (air resistance) is equal to a persons weight. Constant velocity = no acceleration = no net force acting on a particular object. (F=MA). A larger mass requires a higher force of drag. And unless you have the coefficient of drag similar to a moving wall, a larger mass would yield a higher terminal velocity. Galileo's stated that mass does not affect acceleration due to gravity. So a fat man and a skinny man would accelerate at the same speed. + the jump master said they've reach 180 with a total tandem mass over 300+lbs Title: Re: SKY DIVING! Post by: 695LAM on May 11, 2008, 09:01:48 AM I have always wanted to go Sky Diving, I will before I get to old. lol I would also like to try (cant think of the name of it) Where you go behind a boat with a parashute, Parasailing? Hell cant think of it but thats on my list of things to do. Cant spell worth a darn this morning. Oh well you know what I mean. [thumbsup]
Title: Re: SKY DIVING! Post by: cyrus buelton on May 11, 2008, 09:59:51 AM Personally, sky diving is the best adrenaline rush I have ever experienced.
I have jumped (tandem) 3 times. It is such a free feeling, it is unbelievable. I can't wait to go again, just an expensive habit..... Costs about 400$ to get your solo certification and then once you have that, 20$ a jump. However......buying a parachute rig is not cheap, about 4g for a decent one Title: Re: SKY DIVING! Post by: Turf on May 11, 2008, 10:06:12 AM Avid skydiver here, went once when I was 18 and got hooked
got certified and now saving up to buy my own gear it's the most frightning feeling followed by the most serene feeling you've ever expierence Title: Re: SKY DIVING! Everywhere ive seen has 3 tandems, and ~10 AFF jumps before you get certified, but you still need a total of 25 jumps to be licensed. ~$2000 for the first 13 jumps. I want to get certified. Post by: Airborne on May 11, 2008, 01:00:52 PM You should try aerobatic flying aka creating your own rollercoaster. I did some in a stearman (open cockpit biplane) all the stuff you can imagine, spins, rolls, immelmans, hammer heads blah blah. The best part for you guys is that when the shit hits the fan you get to skydive too.
No but seriously I think I'm gunna try skydiving soon. It sucks that I cant jump out of my own plane because it is a low wing and I would take out the tail. Title: Re: SKY DIVING! Post by: spinned on May 11, 2008, 01:25:26 PM I did it as a college class. It was our very first dive and we had to pack our own chute and stand in line for our turn in the Cessna. The trip right before mine were two women; the first jump went fine; the second gal opened as a "May West" and had a line wrapped around the chute. It collapsed twice on the way down and she was too freaked to release and deploy the belly chute. She was just a streamer coming down from 3,000 feet. The it would partially open and twirl and then it would collapse again. Luckily it pop partially back open about 500 feet above the ground and she only sprained her leg.
Then it was my turn. I was up next and I was buddied up with a cute chick and she looks at me and says “you still gonna jump?” What is any red-blooded mojo 20 year old college boy going to say to that? Hell yes. And I jumped. I distinctly remember counting …arch one-thousand, two one-thousand, three one-thousand, PULL one-thousand. But after I landed the crew on the plane said they could just hear me screaming all the way down. It was one of the best three minutes rides I have ever taken. Title: Re: SKY DIVING!
