Title: How To: Plug mirror mount screw holes on 696 (w/ pics)
Post by: 1313 on November 11, 2008, 12:23:49 PM
I give credit to lazarus7 for the suggestion in my CRG mirror thread. The official "lazarus 7" mod.  [beer]

Here's how to plug the mirror mount holes on the 696. You can flip the mounts upside down or just spend the buck and some change to plug them up.

The easiest place to find the plugs stateside is at Lowe's Home Improvement.
You'll find them in the hardware/nuts/bolts section in the plastic pull out drawers. Look for the "Hole Plug" drawer. I could not find them at Home Depot.

The size you want for the 696 is 1/4". It fits like a glove. They were only $1.04 plus local sales tax.

Please note that the screw sizes on the previous Monster models are different. I tried the suggested 5/16" plugs and they were too big for the 696.

Just press them in the holes and you are done (same on both sides).  [drink]

Is it just me or is the name hole plug just funny?  [cheeky] Really, say it 10 times and you'll know what I mean. Hole plug, hole plug, hole plug, hole plug, hole plug, hole plug, hole plug, hole plug, hole plug, hole plug. [laugh]

Yah, I made the mistake of getting the 5/16", too. Instead of wasting another $1.04, I just used a 5/16" drill bit and made the hole big enough to accept the plug.  [roll]

I took my iphone to Lowe's and brought up the page with package picture on it. The guy went right to the spot where they
were at and we matched up the numbers.  [thumbsup]

It seems like these are the correct ones. I'm going to try and pick some up next week, hopefully they fit. It is a little more expensive than the plug holes though. http://shop.bevelheaven.com/detail.aspx?ID=284

Keep us posted if they fit! I got the plugs at Lowes, but the clamp looks cleaner.

Sorry to drudge up old thread

and bit off topic, sorta?

I am trying to finagle a Ram mount on '09 696 for my IPhone 3G.  I can go with bar mount with "u" around bar, but even tho I know I can use rubber protector, still not liking idea of possibly damaging my Rizoma red bars.
Sooo, next idea, which think more ideal, is they sell a mount that I can simply screw into old mirror bolt/mounts. I have removed stock mirrors and have bar end mirrors now, so these old mirror bolt holes are available BUT
I need to know BOLT SIZE to order correct mount/stem to screw into one of these (likely left-hand side for ease of use of IPod/Maps/GPS with "free" left hand)

If I can get this done, I will post step-by-step with pix....sure we have few more IPhone users on Monsters out there?

THANK YOU.  [thumbsup]

Again:  What size are bolts for stock mirrors on 2009 Monster 696?

I'm pretty sure they're 6mm, but check that with others before ordering :-\

Isn't one mirror reverse threaded? (just a warning)

Sorry I couldn't answer your question specifically.

why not just use the stock bolts?

or at least take the stock bolts to homedepot to get what you need to match

Stop-Thank you. Thinking of contacting Sebastian at Mellilimoto or Leandro who sold me bike in Miami.
And OOHHHHH yessss, I did forget about that reverse threaded one. dang it...which is it?  Hoping not the left one, would figure.  They also have mounts for the reservoirs, but I'm more lost at sizings there.  I can't be only one trying to do this out here? Seems like a good thread to post once I get figured out?

Raux-if you look at the Ram mounts, these bolts are part of the mount base I am 99.999% sure-permanent part of it ya know?

I would rather mount this to anything BUT my bars.  The velcro on tank has worked really well believe it or not and obviously CHEAP-but in awkward place-NO, not fiddling while riding, but like option to turn music OFF easily when needed and then be nice to use GPS on it as well more safely.

Need to do search, but has anyone also done a pigtail from battery out to somewhere more accesible for battery tender etc/power source OTHER than buying the Ducati pigtail? TKS!

FWIW I just bought these 1/4" plugs and they dropped down into the hole, they are too small.

(2002 620)

edit: The ones that fit mine were 5/16"
