Title: headlight lens -- glass or plastic?
Post by: MotoCreations on November 11, 2008, 03:32:33 PM
Traditionally the Monster headlight lens is glass.  Today noticed on an '08 S4RS that the lens itself was now plastic.  Anyone confirm the production change and when it happened?

All of my head lamp pieces are plastic save the retention lips that retains the lens. I have an '07 S4Rs.

My 05 and 06 are glass.

The headlight bucket on the Sport Classics are plastic rather than metal like on the Monsters....

Plastic first showed up with the 695 and was gradually introduced into the rest of the Monster line.

well, 01 and mine is glass.  Though it's cracked and I need a new one.  I assume the new plastic would fit and might not crack as easy?

Sounds like another place to save money.  The auto industry starting using plastic instead of glass for their headlight covers years ago.  Now you can see cars that are only a few years old with faded headlight covers.  This is really bad in areas where it is sunny all the time.  The UV rays wear the plastic out.  Even supposedly upscale cars like Mercedes are affected.

On the bright side, it won't shatter like glass will. Do you even have to tape them up at the track?

Lighter and cheaper to replace aren't bad intrinsical attributes, either.

Are they in fact lighter?  I'd think they would be significantly.  If it is the case that they are lighter, I've got a glass lens in perfect condition that I'll trade for someone's plastic one.
