Title: Yamaha v16
Post by: 804monster on November 20, 2008, 09:07:42 PM
This looks pretty badass. Maybe they will put it in a corvette.

I was actually thinking about this idea after reading about the RS V8 based on the 'busa that they put in the new Ariel Atom.

I don't think he should put it in a Corvette, while the horsepower number is high, you have to rev it to make the power and the torque is comparably low. This would work a lot better in a lighter car, I say 2500 lbs or less. Be nice in a Miata or even better an Elise/Exige.  [evil]

330 lbs and 550hp. Sweet.

Good luck adjusting 80 valves under four seperate heads though.

meh...

too much complication, probably sounds neat, but a turbo lsx is gonna make way more power for significantly less $$$$$..

Re: turbo LS

You can easily make this much HP with a Hayabusa V8 setup. It would be lighter, almost half the size, and only 2.6L. I see this as a nutty engineering project more than a clever engine. It is cool though, in an excessive way.

That's the new Taurus SHO engine...

If that were the case, I'd have to recommend putting it in the back seat of the upcoming Fiesta.
New SHOgun anyone?

I think that could fit in an R1 frame.  They'll just have to name it the R4.

Yamaha engines for car applications.. reminds me of my old Taurus SHO. That had a nice, lightweight, high output Yamaha aluminum V6.

Guess who made the head for the Celica GTS which is the engine for the Lotus Elise/ Exige these days?

Good motor, I drove the Corolla XRS when it came out. Lots of fun with a six speed. Now they've neutered it with a 2.4L, auto option, and more weight. Jerks.

That sounds bad ass. I had forgot about the BRM V16.

Wow, I wasn't aware of that. Thanks for sharing lethe.. is this the 1.8 litre VVTi engine?

Yup but in the case of that engine it's actually VVTLi, lift is variable as well.

Hell even the regular VVTi Corolla engine is pretty impressive when you start tearing it down. I have the original engine from an '02 Corolla that I had. The engine failed on me at 260,000 miles and I replaced it about a year before getting rid of the car. I have it sitting in the back of garage and occasionally take a bit more apart on it to see what it was about. Pretty impressive for a run of the mill economy car engine. Those Japanese are quite crafty.

Amen brother. The BRM V-16 has been one of my favs for 30 years now. Here is another favorite engine Maserati Tipo V5 (5 litre V16).

Both the Tipo V4 and V5 had Roots superchargers on each crank nose. I wish I had a better picture so I could blow it up and frame it. Of course, I'd settle for one of the real things permanently mounted on a brake dyno to get my fixes.

Oh yeah, just found an in-car clip of the BRM.
