Title: Beer tray mod, my style......... 2.0 Post by: stopintime on November 21, 2008, 04:04:33 PM New version page 3
Finally finished it - a lot of hassle since I didn't know what the hell I was doing. I wanted to keep some protection and most of the size for visual effect - being a big guy on a chopped bike looks even more out of proportion IMO. Cut the plastic, new turn signal holes, smooth the edges, prime, paint, stickers, clear coat. Sounds easy, but for me it wasn't [bang] I cracked the paint once and had to do it again, I applied too much paint and had to wait two weeks before it hardened, I snapped a bolt and had to zip tie one corner. LED Tag Bolts from Custom Dynamics. Aluminum plate holder, DP part Stripes (reduced width) from Ducati1 Will add gel domed sticker later. So here goes [thumbsup] What do you think? Better than stock. Looks good. [thumbsup]
Nice alternative for guys who don't want to chop. Title: Re: Beer tray mod, my style Post by: Buckethead on November 21, 2008, 04:23:30 PM Looks like factory kit. [thumbsup]
Well done! [thumbsup] Title: Re: Beer tray mod, my style Post by: duc996 on November 21, 2008, 06:14:03 PM +1 looks really good.
Title: Re: Beer tray mod, my style Post by: Duck-Stew on November 21, 2008, 07:00:31 PM Kudo's man. Looks *really* good. I like the stripe, the signal mounts, and the attention to detail.
Again... REALLY nicely done! [thumbsup] Title: Re: Beer tray mod, my style Post by: billg69gmc on November 21, 2008, 07:55:23 PM It's as if it were bound to happen... by being a member of a crowd that doesn't follow the crowd; you broke from that crowd set your bike apart. Nicely done!

Title: Re: Beer tray mod, my style Post by: stopintime on November 22, 2008, 03:11:37 AM Guys - thank you so very much for the comments 8) Yes, the pictures are out of focus - I forgot to switch back from macro and/or no flash = long exposure = unstable (hides the tiny imperfections though) The stripes look a bit off, but that's mostly a photo issue. It was a PITA job, not really knowing how to do it. It helped having a clear idea of how I wanted the end result to be. If I had to do it again, I wouldn't - too much hassle. The carbon fibre no-chop tray will replace this one if I need a change. But, as usual, it's a good feeling to make something unique with one's own mind and hands [thumbsup] Title: Re: Beer tray mod, my style Post by: DucHead on November 22, 2008, 03:45:14 AM Nice job man! The paint and strip really look good!!

Thanks [thumbsup] Nope, it's the end/bottom piece of the brake/rotor lock. It's attached on a bracket on the passenger footpeg hanger. Title: Re: Beer tray mod, my style Post by: Monstermash on November 23, 2008, 09:39:33 AM Nice job! [thumbsup]
I like the fact that you added the frame plugs to clean it up a bit. For future reference if you paint anything plastic use an adhesion promoter on it before you paint it. SEM makes a great product and it's available at your local auto body supply shop. http://www.yourautotrim.com/sempladpr.html (http://www.yourautotrim.com/sempladpr.html) You may find that as the paint gets older and it is subjected to different temps and humidity that it will start to crack/chip or even start to peel off. If that happens you get to have all the fun all over again! Title: Re: Beer tray mod, my style Post by: DesmoDiva on November 23, 2008, 10:36:37 AM Great Job!! [thumbsup]
Nice attention to details. At first I thought you had done a chop (due to the frame plugs) and then reattached the beer tray. It looks professional. [moto] Title: Re: Beer tray mod, my style Post by: hunduc on November 23, 2008, 12:47:19 PM wow, great idea. i love it. and the workmanship is not too shabby either... :)
side question: where did you get the "duc monster" sticker on the seat cowl? [thumbsup] Title: Re: Beer tray mod, my style Post by: stopintime on November 23, 2008, 01:47:03 PM I'm thrilled and very happy to read all the nice comments. This motorcycle/riding passion is so much nicer when I have people to share it with - even if you are transatlantic strangers - sometimes it's just a good, close and including feeling I get from this forum.
For future reference if you paint anything plastic use an adhesion promoter on it before you paint it. SEM makes a great product and it's available at your local auto body supply shop. That's what I meant when I wrote "prime". I used Deltron D8420. - and yeah, I don't expect it to last forever, but that's alright. side question: where did you get the "duc monster" sticker on the seat cowl? Bought it off Ducati1 (mine are white, but so thin that the red shines through - could maybe be better in another color?) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Ducati-Monster-Italian-flag-seat-or-fairing-decal-set_W0QQitemZ110308659912QQihZ001QQcategoryZ10448QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Ducati-Monster-Italian-flag-seat-or-fairing-decal-set_W0QQitemZ110308659912QQihZ001QQcategoryZ10448QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262) Title: Re: Beer tray mod, my style Post by: TiNi on November 23, 2008, 02:43:48 PM nice work [thumbsup]

Title: Re: Beer tray mod, my style Post by: corey on November 24, 2008, 11:59:56 AM does chris speak english at all?
how many frame plugs do you get with that order? those are HOT, and i want some bad. Title: Re: Beer tray mod, my style Post by: COWBOY on November 24, 2008, 01:15:15 PM Great job SIT. [thumbsup]
It's been fun watching you pull your ideas together and then achieve them on your S2R. Keep up the good work. Title: Re: Beer tray mod, my style Post by: geoffduc on November 24, 2008, 01:46:01 PM Corey,
Chris speaks perfect english and is more than helpful and yes i think they come in pairs. He also has a very nice plug for the rear wheel if you have a SSS equiped bike. Hope this helps. Title: Re: Beer tray mod, my style Post by: corey on November 24, 2008, 01:53:14 PM oh snap. that sounds awesome.
i will shoot chris an email and see if he can help me out! Title: Re: Beer tray mod, my style Post by: dbran1949 on November 24, 2008, 06:11:58 PM nice job [thumbsup]
Title: Re: Beer tray mod, my style Post by: ellingly on November 26, 2008, 12:03:12 AM Very, very tidy effort there.
I like the added touch of "if I was going to do it again, I wouldn't". :). Looks the business though, so I think despite gassing your apartment out with the paint fumes, you've done an awesome job and should be proud of it. Do all the ladies in Norway now wander past and go "nice arse"? That's the main point :). Some have commented, but the old beer tray matched my own rear end better though, so now I'll have to work on that as well [roll] Title: Re: Beer tray mod, my style Post by: ellingly on November 26, 2008, 03:57:25 AM Thanks! OT, but I used arse cause I'm australian. To us, a nice ass would be this (http://wenga.customer.netspace.net.au/trouties/DSC_9640.jpg).My Monster's new "arse" looks sexy. I should ride my gf's scooter, with the top box it'd hide my arse nicely. Title: Re: Beer tray mod, my style Post by: Dannog on November 27, 2008, 02:55:32 AM Top job, I've seen a painted beer tray before but not one that was also shortened. Like it a lot especially the strip. Not so hot on the plate lights visible int eh last photo.
I think I'd seriously consider doing this in lieu of a tail chop on my next Monster [thumbsup] A+ Title: Re: Beer tray mod, my style Post by: stopintime on November 27, 2008, 11:26:39 AM Top job, I've seen a painted beer tray before but not one that was also shortened. As for now I'm kind of liking the untidy look (which is a theme for all Monsters?) Title: Re: Beer tray mod, my style Post by: Bill in OKC on November 27, 2008, 09:56:41 PM Very nice mod. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what to do with that part and gave up and went with a short CF piece. If I had seen your mod I would have tried that too. I might still - it is a big improvement. I like the relocated signals a lot.
Title: Re: Beer tray mod, my style Post by: LA on November 27, 2008, 11:27:12 PM I want an LA tag.

The carbon fibre no-chop tray will replace this one if I need a change. You did an excellent job on the tail chop / beer tray mod. I want to cut my beer tray but I want to cut the blinker mounts out and use an integrated tail light. What type of saw did you use on the beer tray? Any advice? But, as usual, it's a good feeling to make something unique with one's own mind and hands [thumbsup] Title: Re: Beer tray mod, my style Post by: jeff137 on July 27, 2010, 02:49:32 AM Looks great. Sorry to hear you're having issues and need to repaint. Does anyone near you do automotive wraps? I've been wondering about how it would work on a bike. There's a company near me that is doing tons of work wrapping corporate cars / work trucks and their work looks great with photos, etc. Once applied properly it looks like it is painted on and I think it can be removed later. Perhaps that would be an option for you.?.
Anyway, that's a great mod and looks awesome! [thumbsup] Title: Re: Beer tray mod, my style Post by: stopintime on July 27, 2010, 07:31:42 AM I've managed to destroy some of the paint by now - mostly due to luggage. Applying some clear vinyl for protection.
One of he plastic tabs I used for the LED plate light bolts broke. I'm probably going to be doing it all over this winter, starting with a new stock tray. The signal mount area will be rounded off more and the whole thing will be shorter. I will use another plate light. Desert Dust: I used a cutting wheel on a Dremel. Make sure you have extra plastic, cutting a few mm's from your intended line, because it melts and needs quite a lot of trimming after cutting. I don't have a suitable saw, but I think that would have been easier. Jeff 137: I think the round shape will be difficult to wrap around. Also, not sure how well it will stick to this kind of plastic. There's also the issue of needing to protect the white stripes. Title: Re: Beer tray mod, my style Post by: FIFO on July 27, 2010, 09:17:06 PM Hey Sit That looks good i have a spare beer tray and that will be my next project. And i here what you say about being in proportion. also being a big dude my self ,you don't want to look like Magilla Gorilla ;D The choped bikes look hot and look good with the smaller framed rider. I said if I had to do it again, I wouldn't 8) So, I got the MonsterParts tail, trimmed it a little and brought it to a painter (not DP, sorry) For Geoff's peace of mind, I got another plate light - under the tray [thumbsup] I'm going to let the paint relax before I put on the Ducati Corse sticker. The turn signals are going to flap around, so yes, I might finally get some smaller ones [cheeky] (http://i329.photobucket.com/albums/l394/stopintime/nochop2004.jpg) (http://i329.photobucket.com/albums/l394/stopintime/nochop2002.jpg) Title: Re: Beer tray mod, my style......... 2.0 Post by: Mojo S2R on May 12, 2011, 05:18:59 PM Noice! I always liked your original tail mod. Like this one too. Did you cut off the front angled piece of the tail? I have the same style DP tail and I recently modified the front bottom edge too. I got rid of the underseat lock and trimmed the tail on both sides to match first by trimming the right side to get rid of the lock cutout and then modified the left side to match. Yes, I cut the forward parts of it. Didn't like those and need the space for tail bag straps. I think my homemade tail looked good, but it was a little too long and had cracked in several places. Title: Re: Beer tray mod, my style......... 2.0 Post by: geoffduc on May 13, 2011, 02:40:29 PM It's looking great Lars... [thumbsup]
I really like the way you've left the carbon exposed were the indicators fit...
