Title: FYI - stay off Mt. Tam for a while
Post by: Michael Moore on November 23, 2008, 04:11:23 PM
They're grinding the road down for a re-paving, and the only person happy yesterday was datv on his damn supermoto. Big ruts, piles of gravel = no fun at all. If you need to head north, take the coast.

I'll let ya know when it's paved again.

From about the Bootjack parking lot on the upside, almost to the deadly left hairpin on the downside.

If you're rippin through any of those parts, you're already in trouble, even when the road isn't intentionally torn to pieces.   Thanks for the heads-up, MM.

Damn, I get a chub just looking at the twisties on that map. Y'all must have to change tires once a week! You guys don't know how luckey you are to actually have roads that aren't straight as stretched string to ride on. I'd bet many of you have never ridden all the sweepers there looks to be so many. I'm just sitting here in Tx. moaning and lamenting. I'd better have another Bacon Vodka and soda now.

Whenever I hear about any roads near Mt. Tam, I think Hog Island Oysters. Any rides out there? I'm a fairly proficient shucker! [thumbsup]

Oh, believe me, I know how lucky I am to live here. I never get tired of that road.  [thumbsup]

And yeah SFArchie, we do hit Hog Island from time to time. The people there are great and super friendly.

I ran into someone up there on sunday who said the paving work will be done 12/17.  Ridgecrest/pantoll has been covered in gravel as well, WTF?

definitely not much fun in the current condition.  yikes!

Yeah, love oysters and we've done a few Oyster Rides (mostly to Drakes Bay Oyster Farm where you can buy pre-shucked ones).  BUT the Head of Catering at HIOF is also a DUC rider - he hooked me up with the Reservations Gal at the end of this Summer but it was a month's waiting list to get the Farm reserved for us and then I had to leave for Thailand... - so next year, I'll plan ahead and will start a thread.  The only thing is that we'll have to have folks come who know how to shuck since HIOF doesn't pre-shuck them for you (so SFArchie, I better see you on that Attendee list!)  ;)

Based on a couple of experiences, the Hog Island people will let you just hang out at a table and eat oysters if you're willing to get booted when a party with a reservation shows up. Plus we never got charged for the table.  [thumbsup]

Bring your own drinks... yes, even water...

for some reason the management at HIOF doesn't feel like selling beverages of any sort - not even a coke machine.  The water from their sinks tastes like it's been used to purge the oysters.  However, they ARE the best oysters around and they are worth the inconvenience.

Hey Red, here's a video I shot to test out my new Flip Mino video cam. I shot it on the Vespa thinking it might be less bumpy, plus it is easy to mount on the Vespa.  Hope you enjoy it.

Hey, I just bought one of those too for my track documentation - it works so good that it almost makes me look fast [roll].  Actually I'm really happy with it!  I bought a REI ultra clamp to hold it to the top triple and it is just great.

Oh man...
Doesn't take much to set off an oyster craving.    [bang]

Can we start planning that trip for next summer now??   ;D

Monsieur Chef, isn't it the "milky" season right now for oysters?  I thought there is a saying to avoid oysters during the months ending in "...er"?

Not to carry on the threadjack, but after a bit of reading, seems the "season" is any month with an "R".
Something about hybridized oysters or such.   [cheeky]

Can we go now?   ;D  ;D

(I blame the Mob for this horrible addiction.   [laugh])

Jammen is correct [thumbsup] - the colder the month the better.  Therefore those months with an "R" are considered good oyster months.  The ones we had a week ago right out of Marshall were pretty fricken good!

Time to get geeky...(as if that's such a stretch), but more recent oyster research has come up with strains of Triploids that are good even during the warmer months.  Yes, good oysters year round.  MM and I went to Hog Island a few months back during the "off" season and partook of some great oysters called "Atlantics" (from an East Coast seed) and they were just as good as winter varieties.

You can always take the Bolinas/Fairfax road instead. The stop at the dam is nice, and the wet pine needles on the road this time of the year add extra excitement!
