Then might got between the fairing bit and the mount. Sinxe I've never picked over a 696 w/ tools in hand, I'm just hazarding a guess

(http://www.fototime.com/23FCA856B59F743/standard.jpg) I replaced the bikini fairing using the two screws the dealer gave me. I still can not find a spot for these "spacers" .
