Title: Arrow Steering Damper install problem
Post by: fivetwo on December 03, 2008, 10:38:52 AM
Just installed an Arrow damper on my S2R.  Problem I have is that the damper hits the tank on the left side and the damper bracket hits the tank on the right side when I turn full left or right.  Now I can't turn the handle bar far enough to the left to lock the handle bar.  I have already turned the damper resevoir up so that the word Arrow is upside down.  Anyone with this problem?

The piece that holds the damper body can go on two ways.  One way moves the body of the damper further away from the tank than the other way.  That might help the left side.  You can adjust the steering stop to prevent the bracket from hitting the tank on the right side.  Be very careful lifting the tank with this damper installed.  It can be done - on my bike - but the handlebars have to be perfectly centered and you can push the damper forward some to help clear the tank.

Assuming the brackets are correctly positioned. I had to tweak one of the steering stops in a little. But then again I tweaked them out when I first got it.   If I remember the bracket  bumped slightly on the right side of the tank so I had to tweak the left stop.  If it alot more then either they're positioned wrong ot the "L" bracket is the wrong length.

Thanks guys.  Are you able to turn the handle bar far enough to the left so that you lock the handle bar with the ignition?

If you have enough clearance when you move the handle bar to full lock on the right, then slide the damper inside of the bracket to the right. I have just about 10mm clearance on either side. Once you get it centered, if you still are hitting the tank, then adjust the stops. I didn't need to adjust the stops in my case though.

Another little trick is to reverse the upper handle bar clamps.  They are not even, one side is higher than the other.  It'll raise the damper up a few mm's which helps to not hit the tank [thumbsup]

This is mine, S2R1K.  Hopefully you can see the pic.  The reservoir is upside down.  And the clamp that holds the damper is also upside down, with the allen heads pointed towards the tank.  Lock-to-lock, I have about a 1/4" clearance on both sides, and I can lift the tank without moving the damper.
