Hi, just got my babes delivered last week.
I cannot figure out why the bike (M696) takes a while to start. Feels like the starter has to really work hard to get the engine alive. Battery Volt shows 12.3 to 12 v. OAT is around 21deg. Temperatures are gonna drop further. i wonder if it takes 6 to 8 start attempts now, how is it gonna cope up a couple of days from now... :)
Advice anyone. I hope i am not getting the start sequence wrong.

+1 ALmost always have to use it to start mine.
have tried using the cold start lever, but it ends up giving fuel vapours. so i avoid using it until the engine kicks in. is this a common problem or its just with me.

What exactly is your sequence for starting when you use the cold start lever?
Mine is:
Open lever all the way
Turn key
Hit button
Adjust lever so idle is normal
well i have not tried opening the lever all the all, will do that on the next start. if it works with you, should work with mine, i hope so.

I don't claim to be a techie but that sequence works for my s2r and doesn't seem to hurt anything. Maybe duclvr can chime in with his sequence for his 696.

Exactly the same procedure with my 696. I've got @ 800 miles on mine and have had the 600 mile service done.
This is what works for me.
Another cold start lever user here. The manual mentions this procedure.

That's exactly what I do and I haven't had any problems.
2009 696, SS Termi system, Ergal Lightweight timing gears. Down to 30 f never touch the idle lever until engine starts, usally first crank, start-up is like one pop and its running. Then I pull the lever back a bit to get 1400 while I finish putting on my helmet and outer gloves. Runs great, much better than my 2002 620 did!
+1 with JBubble and JEtTest starting sequences. I've got over 3000 miles on my 696 and I always start with the idle lever wide open. Kicks over first time every time. I then adjust it down to idle somewhere between 1500 and 2000 rpms, put on the helmet and gloves, turn the idle lever off and ride. When I first got it I forgot to put the idle lever on and thought I was going to kill the battery trying to start it.
