Title: M400 big bore question Post by: itsy on December 09, 2008, 02:54:25 AM I may down the line want to upgrade my M400 and want to understand the engine management of the M400.
I have seen a 520cc and a 606cc big bore kits available in Japan, would installing these kits also require a reflash of the ECU or some other engine management option? or will the ecu self adjust? i have no idea how the M400 (2007 model) handles engine management. Thanks for any insight. Also just checked and my M400 has no O2 sensors. So is it basically a M620 in terms of engine management (assuming that only the 695 has O2 sensors)? Likely it's the same Magneti-Marelli ECU as the 620 (and the majority of fuel-injected Monsters), but with different maps. Since it's got no O2 sensors, it won't self-adjust. Re-flashing may be possible, check in the Minor Sponsor board for Moto Italia. A PowerCommander may be another option. The 620 didn't have an O2 sensor? Correct, it didn't. Title: Re: M400 big bore question Post by: itsy on December 10, 2008, 03:37:27 AM Thanks.. seems like it will be a rather extensive mod (parts, electronics, labor, etc), do you know if the intake/exhaust valves on a M400 are the same size as the 620? also is the exhaust system the same size on both (dia of pipes)? if they are smaller on the M400 then the attractiveness of a upgrading the engine is not as high.
I am trying to get a sense if its worth it to upgrade the M400 or if should just get a larger bike, got the M400 given the licensing system here in Japan else would have gotten the 695, will be upgrading my license in the spring time to an unlimited cc version, may make more sense to get a 696 or 1100 at that time. Title: Re: M400 big bore question Post by: Raux on December 10, 2008, 04:57:56 AM i would hold out for the larger bike when your license is clear for it. no offense, but that system is there for a reason, and it works. by the time you are ready for a larger bike you will be able to ride one legally.
Title: Re: M400 big bore question Post by: itsy on December 10, 2008, 07:38:12 AM understand what you are saying. i'm not looking to make any mods for a while for a reason, have some background on not getting ahead of myself in regards to performance machines. FYI the licensing system here is NOT based on logic, that in general is hard to find around here, its based on rules for rules sake.
so in the mean time would like to learn about the M400 and future upgrade options.. can't find any real information anywhere on the bike besides the basic info in the manual Title: Re: M400 big bore question Post by: Speeddog on December 10, 2008, 10:07:21 AM I doubt that the valves on the 400 are the same size as the 620, as the bore is 9.5mm smaller.
If you download the parts catalogues from ducati.com, you can cross-reference part numbers with the 620s. There's virtually no information here in the USA on the 400, as it never was officially imported here. Duck-Stew *may* be able to confirm the valve sizes, as IIRC, he has some 400 hardware. Besides, there's someone out there looking for an '07 M400 and that way you'd have one available for sale so they could work through thier 400cc licensing. Title: Re: M400 big bore question Post by: itsy on December 10, 2008, 05:12:32 PM I was afraid the valves would be smaller, seems like upgrading to 696 or 1100 later on will be the best path.. thanks for the details
