PRESS RELEASE

DUCATI DEALERS COMPETE TO BUILD THE COOLEST MONSTER 1100 S

As the national premiere approaches, Ducati dealers get to work customizing.

Cupertino, CA (10 December 2008) â€" Ducati North America is pleased to announce a customization contest as part of the forthcoming Ducati Monster 1100 S showroom premiere.

In order to launch the Monster 1100 S to the public in real monster style, Ducati has launched a dealer contest to see who can build the best custom Monster. As the original custom-ready naked bike, the new Monster 1100 S is ready for modifications, and the gloves are coming off in a contest to build the best.

Fifty-eight dealers in the US and Canada have taken delivery of a body panel set in order to begin paintwork on the dealership's dream Monster; and all have accessories in house waiting to be fitted on the dealership's first bike. The results promise to be nothing less than spectacular and will launch the Monster with a bang.

The Ducati dealers will have two weeks over the holidays to build their custom; and their bikes will be unveiled to customers over the National Premiere weekend, January 9-10th. The weekend will celebrate the individuality and personal expression inspired by Ducati's original naked bike and highlight the vast potential of the Monster 1100 S.

For a list of participating dealers, and to vote for the coolest custom Monster, please visit www.ducatiusa.com; where the contest will run January 1st through January 13th.

About the Ducati Monster 1100 S:

The bike that started the naked bike revolution has been reborn and is, once again, breaking all the rules. The new Monster weighs in at an astonishing 47lbs less than its closest class competitor and the power of its 1100cc air-cooled engine gives it an impressive power-to-weight ratio. The M1100 S combines the carnal nakedness of the original Monster with the latest technology and styling. An icon of individuality features like removable tank panels make the M1100 S the perfect platform for personalization.

I hope that we see more than a nice paint job and a bunch of DP parts slapped on to most of these bikes, but my expectation is low.

Mark, do you have some super secret awesome sauce lined up?

Woo.. dealers, putting catalog parts on a bike.

I'd rather see a bunch of custom builders hacking away at the damn things.

I'll vote for whichever dealer has the balls to yank that headlight off and replace it with something cool.  I'd like to see a traditional round headlight, dual lights, & the V-Rod headlight mounted on different 1100 Monsters.

The first thing someone should do is a custom trellis subframe (maybe made of ti).

I'm in!   ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Funny though, they've got the Dealers doing it because they know the owners will do non-sale-able mods like V-Rod headlights and other trick aftermarket bits...

I wouldn't jump the gun thinking the dealers are just going to throw a bunch of DP stuff at it and call it a day.

I just got off the phone with my local dealer and I may collaborate with them on a custom design. They are planning on doing a theme and then raffling off the body work for charity after the contest is over. Of course they may be able to just sell the bike as is (customized) after as well.

Just curious... does anyone know why this report came from Cupertino?  Does Apple own Ducati now?  There isn't even a dealer in Cupertino.

No comment.  But if I did participate -- TIG welder would be required as well as some tubing & 6061 and of course machine time on the lathe/mill.  I don't do "paintjob projects".

I don't think you're going to see many really custom bikes - just paint and a pipe more or less. The info we got said to either paint the bodywork or put a pipe on it... we passed for the reasons stated earlier in this thread.

Probably the biggest reason you won't see any wild customs is that the bikes still have to be sold and as many of you know there is no return for modifications... remember the custom S4R from Section 8? Given the current economic situation (plus winter is slow for most of the motorcycle industry) I don't think many dealers are interested in dumping $10-$20K+ into a custom in time, money and materials.

Heavily modded bikes don't sell well.

They definitely don't sell for near what was invested in them. It's not really in the dealers interest to do a lot with these, except to draw some attention.

God forbid DNA funded a project that would be a GREAT marketing trick. Well, I say great because it is great for us the rabid owners. Considering that we don't have to be convinced to buy into the brand, maybe it would be a waste of money for DNA but since they don't do the nationwide owners gathering anymore (again) maybe throw us a bone.

I have to say this, whoever made that 696 undertail exhaust better do it for the 1100 for this show. That exhaust with the clean look of the 1100 SSS and aircooled will blow this contest away.
