So, I'll be helping my sister move from the FL panhandle, to Austin. I have two reasons for this trip. 1) Helping my baby sister start a new life. 2) Scouting out the area. My wife and I have considered moving for some time. Since I was laid-off in October we figure now is a good time. Any advice on places I should go? We have two small children (not yet in school). My wife has some experience in the fitness industry. I have about 8 yrs. in hospitality. I'm going back to school at the first of the year. I'm open to any kind of work that allows me to provide for my family and attend school. Austin sounds like a good place to start over. (I'm so ready to leave these flat, straight roads behind and see what my ride can really do. ;D)
Any advice is tremendously welcome!
I won't be much help...but I do have several friends that moved there and they seem to like it. They do complain about the weather occasionally (after coming from CA). I would really like to go and check out the music scene - it's supposed to be one of the best. And I like their motto.

I live a few miles out of town. This area is a great place to raise kids. Excellent schools out this way. If you have a son and want him in football, then this is state and town to do it in!! It can get boring out here but Austin is a only a short 15 min ride on more twists than you'll see in FL! I know..I lived in Jupiter ;)
In regards to weather, it's been friggen cold here these past couple days..but..it's supposed to be back up to the 60's-70's by the end of the week.
There's a lot to do here though!! Don't let the cheap housing fool you. THe property taxes will get ya!! It is a buyers market here though..like everywhere.

Dude, it's not the politics sub-forum! Keep it to weather and music [laugh] :)
It gets cold there? Man, it snowed in the bay area, CA today. I have proof!

I'm told the summers are worse, but I don't know first-hand.

Yeah, surprised me. I thought it was like AZ here all year around?! I woke up to snow though a few days ago! 30's but 20's with windchill yesterday.
The humidity in the summer here is not bad at all! It's nothing like Dallas. I felt more humidity in MI and FL the most humid day here last summer.
Allergies are supposed to be pretty bad here too. I moved down in the middle of summer so they never hit me.
C'mon over! Is your sister single or what? ;D
THCM board is a few down from here.
sunday night, go to the continental club. it's south (i think) of the congress ave bridge (the one with all the bats). sundays :haybale" plays there. it's a local all star group with members rotating. last time i was down there, they had Johnny Cash's keyboard guy. and some dude with fingers like sausages playing guitar like you wouldn't think possible.
if you are there in the summer go down to greune dance hall. make sure it's a tuesday. get a room in town there and eat at the old mill.

called the Grist Mill. Best damn tenderloin you'll ever taste.
ATX is a great place to live for sure. Lived there for 10 years. I'd love to move back eventually
Austin is a great place to live, with opportunities for both of your fields. I don't have kids but I know folks who do say is Austin is a great place to raise kids. Wouldn't want to be anywhere else. Music, Food, and Hill Country riding. What more do you need.
austin is definitely cool... i've been there several times and have always had a blast. it's like a little oasis from what i typically consider "texas". plus you'll be pretty close to hill country, and able to come along on our LSD/THC trips! that's a definite plus.
though for what it's worth, fort worth is actually pretty cool also. nice town, nice people, plenty of parking, lots to do, and you have motorsports ranch close by (cresson), not to mention AMS (alvarado & dallas). post up in the DFW board if you want any info at all. good luck with the move!
Man, I miss Austin. No advice to offer on the move, but be sure to visit the Salt Lick while you are there - bring beer and an appetite. On that note, enjoy being able to go into any corner store in pick up quality, often locally-brewed beer. For breakfast, go to Kirby Lane for the unfinishable short stack of pancakes.
Thanks for all the replies! I've heard that those from Austin love it, this confirms that.

Well, she is single now. But that is the major reason for the move. I am not a violent or short tempered person. However, if I ever run into a certain former brother in-law, it will be difficult not to punch his face in. (Maybe a few[beer]will make it easier.)
